ScoJo's Running Down a Dream Journal (comments welcome)

Hey Scott!

Best WISHes on your 5K this weekend!!!! :cool1: I know that you will do a great job! Go Scott! Go! :cheer2:

Is Expedition Hidden Mickeys the title for your trip report for this year? That is a great title!!! :thumbsup2 My kids are so excited to be going to WDW in September! I'm a little concerned about how they will handle the heat though because according to my DD5, the 75 degree weather we had this week is "just too hot!" :rotfl:

Looking forward to your race report.... Go Scott! Go! :cheer2: Have a great weekend! :sunny:

:moped: GO SCOTT!!!!! BEST OF LUCK ON YOUR 5K TODAY!!!!

Can't wait to hear how it went. Thinking of you racing like the wind today!!!

Thanks to everyone for their support and well wishes for the race I ran today!

Tracy - Yeah, that's the working title for this years trip since our two main goals are to ride Expedition Everest and find a bunch of Hidden Mickeys. It's funny you mentioned the heat...last year DD was complaining of 80 degree weather all summer. Somehow...magically....the 80-90 degree heat in WDW was "not that bad out" LOL! :rotfl: I guess it's a little different when you are doing something fun!

Amy - You are so awesome!! Thanks so much for the encouraging words. I didn't put it in my report, but when I was running up those hills I just kept thinking "you are laughing at me now, but I'm gonna kick your a## when I run back down you" :rotfl2: I have to say that it made them much easier! If it weren't for you I think I'd still be really struggling with them....thanks!!

Just for the record, I'm picking Barbaro to win today's Kentucky Derby.

On to the race report....

Library Run 5k - Saturday May 6th
After taking another day off on Friday, I woke up early Saturday morning feeling really good. I was a little nervous and anxious but not as bad as I was for the Hoya and the Hare race a few weeks ago. At least I knew what to expect this time! I was up around 6am and made it out the door by 6:45 to begin my trek into the North Georgia mountains and the little town known as Ball Ground.

After a nice 20 minute drive that allowed me to watch the sunrise over the mountains, I exited the interstate and saw the banners directing the way to downtown where the race was being held. The weather was awesome....very sunny, low humidity, slight breeze and temperatures in the upper 50s/low 60s. I made my way to the community center and parked there, even though the flyer stated there wasn't any parking at the center...guess plans changed a little. Anyway, I went in and got my number (#415....which I liked...15 is a lucky number for me...and also 4 and 15 are part of the numbers on Lost...hmmm.....maybe I'll see Kate for some pre-race Jungle Romancin'...oops....wife will probably read this....just kidding honey! ;) as long as there aren't any Dharma Initiatve logos on the water, I guess it'll be ok) and picked up my race t-shirt and goodie bag. Person behind the desk said there were about 150 people signed up which made their largest turnout in the 5 years that the race has been run.

Anywho, I did some warm up walking on a track around the ball field and it was soon time to line up for the race. I positioned myself in the middle of the pack and at 8:04am (thanks Polar monitor) the race began. We went up a small hill...thru the flat downtown and began our ascent up the first big hill that led us past the elementary school. I was feeling it about 4 minutes in and had planned to run 4r/1w intervals but since no one was walking yet, I pushed on and didn't stop until we made it over the hill and to another flat area around minute 7. I took a 1 minute break and began up the next hill. Upon conquering that hill, I reached the 1 mile point and was pleased to hear 9:15 as I ran by. My heart was racing like it was on Thursday so I slowed down and walked a few times as I approached the 15 minute mark. Soon I reached the turnaround and told myself that it was all downhill from there....I took another brief walk break and pushed on to the 2 mile mark where I heard 20:25 being called out. Now, quick head math told me that if I could pull off the last 1.1 miles in 9:35, I could come in under 30 minutes....I was excited but very winded and had to take another walk break or two during my flat/downhill/flat/downhill run for the finish.

When I got to the point where I could see the finish line, I knew that I'd have to sprint to make it...so I gave it everything I had left in the tank. Unfortunately, I didn't break 30 minutes but I did finish at 30:12 which was way better than I thought I could do on this course. I turned my card in and went to do a cool off walking lap around that ball field track. I was really pleased with finishing over 3 minutes better than I did during the last race but have to admit that I was disappointed at coming sooo close to breaking the 30:00 mark. I can look back and think of where I could have picked up 12 seconds....I think if I would have just skipped one walk, I could have done it. Oh well, I finished and did good so I really had nothing to complain about.

I got some water, a banana and a chocolate chip cookie and sat down...all of this of course after stretching out a bit...and went over my HR monitor data. I kind of freaked when I saw that my max HR was 198!! I averaged 179 for the race which was right about were I was for the Hoya race. My times were 30:12 overall...splits were 9:15/11:10/9:47.

After sitting a while, they called the people for the fun run and led them to its starting line. The fun run consisted of parents and kids....kids like 4 & 5 years old...along with some under 10 kids running solo. I was kicking myself for not bringing my daugther along. I could have run with her and she would have loved being able to cross the finish line chute after an easy sub-1 mile run. I went and cheered on the little ones as they made their way to the finish. My favorite moment was watching a little girl who was around 4 years old sing "head, shoulders, knees and toes" while she ran and held hands with her dad. I made a mental note to call ahead to all future races and see if they have events like this...it is exactly what I'm looking for to get my daughter involved.

They did the awards and had a door prize raffle (which is why I hung around) but I didn't win anything so I went back to the car and made my way home.

Overall I confirmed my suspicion that I am now addicted to competing in running events. I've come a long way in two short months....from couch/tv/ice cream/fast food to exercise/tv/apples/healthy lunches (hey...I'm allowed to still watch tv!!)....from walking once or twice a week with the dog to running 3 times a week and working out 2 other days....from wishing I could do something with my life to realizing that I can do anything I put my mind to, including running a marathon.

Off to go cut the grass and take the dog for a walk....and find some more events to run in.

WOW, Scott! You did so GREAT!!! :thumbsup2 Congrats to you! I know you are disappointed for not breaking 30 mins, but to improve on your time by 3 minutes from your last race...AND this one was with killer hills.....you have nothing to be disappointed about!!

I am extremely proud of you!! You are kicking a$$!!! :yay:

And I gotta say....I too am still realing from Lost this week. WTH!!!

Keep up the great work...when is the next race?

Scott, Way to go on your race!!! :cool1: Next time breaking 30 minutes will be a snap, especially without all those hills!

Now, no more talk about last week's Lost, people. I haven't seen it yet! DH and I watch together and he has been travelling so much we are behind. We watched the clip show last night, so now we are only one week behind.

:cheer2: :cheer2: WAY TO GO SCOTT!!!! You did awesome.....and honestly you should be soooo proud (breaking 30 or not). That course sounds grueling!!! SOOOOOO proud of you!!!!! :cool1:

The races make all the prep worthwhile....I think they just drive you to do more! I love them too and can't wait for my next race on June 3rd!

The fun run sounds cute....I'm hoping my girls will join me on our next race so they can do the family fun run. I know a lot of races really try to encourage the family to come along with activities, etc. Plus it's so wonderful for kids to see their parents living a healthy lifestyle and going out there to do their best. And in my case...have fun but certainly not win! Wonderful life lessons all around :).

Way to go Scott!!!   :cheer2: :cheer2:  :cheer2:

You did great with this run!!! Finishing under 30 minute next time, should not be hard for you. You were so close this time. Great job!!!!

Keep up the good work!! You are doing great!

Happy Monday :)

Scott,

I loved reading your race report, but I think that one statement is the best of all! What an amazing thing you have done in just two months time! :cheer2: You made a goal, you accomplished that goal, and now, you realize that you can do anything that you put your mind to. That is just so awesome, Scott! :thumbsup2 I am so happy for you! :teeth:

Have a wonderful Monday! :sunny:

Way to go Scott!! :cheer2: :cheer2: You did Awesome! I wouldn't fret over 12 seconds, you'll shave off way more than that on a slightly flatter course!

Isn't it amazing how life changing a little running can be! I feel so great each time I push to a new level (even though I haven't hit too many).

You wouldn't happen to be a writer for a living would you? You always put things so eloquantly! It makes your journal so much fun to read! :sunny:

Have a good week!

Hello everyone! Thanks for the support! Some shout outs before the update....

Kim - Thanks!! Only one more day 'til a new episode...have you been following the game that started with the Hanso Foundation commercial? Anyway, I'm looking at the following races but haven't committed to anything yet: Woodstock Kiwanis 5k on May 20....Celebrate America 5k/10k on May 29...Possum Trot 10k on June 17. Then it's on to my first real big race, the Peachtree Road Race 10k on July 4th (55,000 runners).

Anna - Thanks! You've gotta get caught up with Lost...it's crunch time with new episodes all the way to the 2 hour season finale on May 24th!

Amy - Thanks! Remind me to tell you about a part of this book that I'm reading that made a comment about parents and their kids as it relates to sports...and I'm glad to see you've signed up for another race!! This stuff is addicting!

Jamie - Thanks and your posts always put a smile on my face each day!

Tracy
- Thanks for the support! (only 4 months till WDW!!)

Amber
- Yep, it's amazing how our bodies react to running...and the confidence we get from achieving training goals...just makes the whole day better! Funny you mention about being a writer...I actually started a small project about a month ago. I love to write but have a hard time putting my thoughts into written words.

So I ended up overindulging in some premium beers on Saturday night and then had a horrible day of eating on Sunday so I've gotta get back into the routine this week. I'm dreading stepping on that scale tonight...but hey, I had fun and if it means a few extra workouts then so be it...

Sunday May 7th
Started off the day by returning the New Balance 845 shoes that I had purchased. I wore them 4 times and couldn't make it past the 2 mile mark without my shins hurting pretty bad. So, I got credited back and then went and tried out a bunch of different shoes to see what I could find. I tried Mizuno, New Balance, Brooks and Asics and finally settled on a pair of Asics GT-2110. They felt really comfortable in the store and will hopefully not hurt my feet or legs during runs. I wish I had tried them on when I made my original purchase.

It was an off day for running but I ended up going to a park with my daughter where we rode our bikes for about 45 minutes. Gotta remember how much I love biking and start adding that into the cross training mix. If only those seats were more comfortable...

Monday May 8th
The plan was to increase my run time to 45 minutes and still maintain the 4r/1w ratio. My legs were a little sore from the weekend activites...add that to the fact that I was trying out my new shoes....so I decided to make this a nice easy run. I'd maintain a good heart rate but not push myself. The goal was to get the steps and minutes in and not worry about anything else. It ended up being a great run. I took my time and never got winded. The shoes felt great the whole way. I covered 3.95 miles in 45:25 (11:30 avg mile, 179/163 HR). It's kind of funny to look back at my training log and realize that a nice easy run now is faster that what I thought was a strenuous run a couple of months ago!

The rest of the week's schedule looks like this:
Tuesday - 40 minutes on the elliptical
Wednesday - day off, but I think I may do 40 more on the elliptical (because I think that Tuesday's weigh in is not gonna be good)
Thursday - 45 minute 4r/1w
Friday - 40 minutes on the elliptical
Saturday - 6 mile distance run 4r/1w (there is some festival in the park where I normally run so I'll have to find a new place)
Sunday - off

Glad your new shoes are better! I could always tell when it was time for a new pair if I suddenly started getting aches and pains. Shoes - new or old - should not cause pain.

LOL. Hopefully DH and I will get a chance to watch last weeks and this weeks episodes of Lost this weekend and then we will be all caught up for the big finale stuff!

Good Luck with the WI today and Have a great Tuesday & rest of the week!

Hey Scott :thumbsup2

Please don't fret over your minor over-indulgences....I think a lot of us overindulged recently. Let's just say I found some tootsie rolls last night  . That's all I'm going to say about that LOL! :bitelip:

Your schedule looks....exhausting LOL! I am doing my first 6 miler this weekend too. That will officially be THE LONGEST DISTANCE I have ever run in my entire life! I can't wait to do it! Let's just hope i make it there, feeling a bit sore today after yesterday's class ;).

Isn't that funny how we look at the 11's as our "slow" or "easy" runs. :rotfl2: Back in February that would have been a GREAT run! So that shows....we really are improving! I had to take today off from running....my DD had a field trip which I attended....so it cut out my run time. That's okay...hip is still bothering me. Maybe I'll skip KBX tomorrow and run instead! BTW...You are the man! Rockin' out the ellipticals between runs! And you really geared up those weekday runs! I'm still wimping out and only doing 35 minutes  , I've got to kick it up a notch and push out to 40 for a few weeks and then 45. My next race is June 3rd (5K) and the biggie is a very challenging trail run on June 23rd. After that I don't have a race until Aug. 13th where KIM AND I will run together :grouphug: . If you do all those runs over the next few months you're going to be a race veteran! :thumbsup2 .

Have a great week!!! Don't sweat the scale....it'll be fine!!! :goodvibes

Um, Amy.....if you show up on the 13th, you'll miss it!! It's on the 12th!!! :rotfl: I'll be on a flight to WDW on the 13th!!

Scott - You are doing AWESOME!! I can't find another word for it. I can't believe you're up to 6 miles already! SO impressive!!! :thumbsup2

When I read your journal, I just think about your daughter. She has got to be so proud of you! What a great thing you are doing, not only for yourself - but for her too.

I'm glad the new sneakers feel better. I really gotta get out & try some on. The store didn't give you a hard time about returning used sneakers? Where did you buy them?

Oh, and I didn't try out the Hanso commercial thing, but I've heard about it. That show is just haunting...I can't wait for tomorrow!

Wow, Scott! Congrats on the race! I can't even imagine doing what you're doing.

Hope you're having a great week!

Hey Scott!

You are doing a wonderful job! Did you say that you are running 6 miles this weekend? :woohoo: That is awesome! :thumbsup2 Keep up the good work! :cheer2:

Thank you so much for your help with my computer :goodvibes .... My brother and I used the information that you gave me and spent a few hours trying to get rid of the virus and trojan horse that Norton didn't find. :badpc: So far, so good! Thanks again, Scott! :goodvibes

Have a wonderful Wednesday! :sunny:

Wow Scott.....way to go on 6 miles!!

You are doing a great job! Keep up the good work! Glad to hear that you were able to find new shoes and they are better!

Happy Wednesday!

As always, thanks to everyone for stopping by!!

Kim - Bought the shoes at Dick's Sporting Goods. When I returned them, I was expecting a million questions and a resistance to wanting to take them back but I was very surprised. They have a 60 day return policy and I was at day 32, the only question they asked was "Is there anything wrong with the shoes" to which I replied "nothing except they hurt my legs when I run in them". Then I was issued a full credit back on my charge card. The person I got the new ones from was extremely knowledgeable and really helped me pick out the best ones (I tried on probably 10 pair!)

Tracy - Glad to be of assistance with the PC issues. It's so hard sometimes to pinpoint the exact cause of the trouble. Please let me know if things start freezing up again.

Amy - Soo cool that you and Kim are running together in August! You guys will have a blast! (if you show up on the right day, of course :rotfl2: ) I think it's neat that you are trail running too. How difficult is it? Don't you have to constantly keep looking down so you don't twist an ankle on rocks/twigs/etc? I'm starting to get in to mountain biking and couldn't imagine running on some of those trails....

Well, Lost got pretty weird last night but it looks like next week is gonna be a action packed/revealing episode....and bye bye to Chris  I think that just sealed the win for Taylor...I'm satisfied as long as Elliot doesn't win (do NOT like his voice!)

Short update today....anyone have any info on running for chairities??

Tuesday May 9th & Wednesday May 10th

I combined these days since they were both 40 minute elliptical sessions. Tuesday's was 4.25 elliptical miles (9:25 avg mile, 166/153 HR) and Wednesday's was 4.23 elliptical miles (9:27 avg mile, 171/154 HR).

I had dreaded stepping on the scale Tuesday due to some poor eating choices over the weekend but I was surprised to see the readout at 213.2, my lowest weigh in yet! It's interesting to see how much weight fluctuates from week to week, but I guess as long as there is a downward trend I'll be satisfied.

Wednesday was supposed to be an off day but I think I want to go to a 6 day a week workout instead of the current 5 day schedule that I am on now. I know that a body needs rest in order to get stronger but I think if I keep the road running to three days and the non-impact cross training to the other three days, I'll be alright.

I've also started thinking about attempting to raise money for charities. I know there is a Team in Training program out there that supports cancer and I'm sure there are tons of other similar ones as well. I do worry about not being able to raise a substantial amount of money and about how to solicit for donations...I guess you just start going door to door at local businesses trying to get their support. I also don't have a specific chairity in mind. I've been lucky and haven't lost any close members of my family to any one disease. I guess I could start exploring what is out there and pick one that I believe in the most. Just some food for thought...I think I'll start looking at some different websites today.

Hey Scott!!!

I'm bummed that Chris is gone.....He was my fave. Now I'm hoping for Taylor. At least he's fun to watch. IMHO Eliot and Katherine are, well, boring LOL! But that's just me (hoping not to offend any Kat or Elliot fans out there!). But I'll miss Chris....I liked the sound of his voice. But in fairness...he wasn't "on" the other night and Taylor was definitely in his groove!

Scott, I am very seriously thinking about joining up with Team In Training. They have a cool website you can visit. They have informational meetings frequently and I am planning to attend one soon. You do have to raise quite a bit of money, but I think they help you with ideas, etc. They will pay for your hotel and registration fee for the race though...and airfare I think. But of course that means a lot of fundraising which might be tons of work :confused3 . I am very excited about TnT though b/c my Grandmother, who really helped raise me, died from Lymphoma and that is the charity that TnT runs for. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of America I believe.

Also, I have been training about 6 days a week now for a while. I have to say that my body really started screaming at me. I was told by my Instructor yesterday and also my Dad (the coach) that I am feeling the effects of overtraining. I think my problem lies in that 6 days a week of high impact. KBX is pretty grueling...involving punching, kicking, jumping, etc. So maybe it's just too many days of joint and muscle pounding. By doing the Elliptical 3 days instead you might not feel the effects like I did. My only caution would be to listen to your body...if you start getting leg aches (not muscle stiffness....actual dull aches) then lay off one day a week. I find that helps! I did not run at all on Tuesday....today I had a GREAT run. So I know my body needs more rest! Just listen to the signals and you'll be great!

And CONGRATS :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: on the weigh-in!!!!

Hey Scott!

Congratulations on your weigh-in! :thumbsup2 I agree that the scale doesn't always make sense when compared to how we eat, but when it shows a loss, we'll take it! :thumbsup2 (By the way.... if the scale doesn't show a loss, scale bashing is a great way to get your exercise in. :rotfl: I know from experience. ;) )

You are doing a great job! :cheer2: I think that's great that you are looking to pair your running with a charity. :goodvibes

Have a great weekend! :sunny:
