i didn't know about these, so maybe this will help others out..
DD told me that there are tables at the sci fi that are only for walk up guests...
the tables aren't in the cars, but rather at tables with umbrellas....
you can't reserve in advance for these but you can get them as a walk up..

so if you try to make reservations at the sci fi and it's completely booked, you can still try at the podium and ask if any of the walk up tables are available...

DD and her friend ate at the sci fi walk up tables twice...
turns out the sci fi was good for them.....the chef specially prepared their lunches for them (they're vegetarians)....apparently what he prepared was really yummy....go figure...

I don't know about keeping tables aside, but we've done walk in to Sci-fi before for supper with no problems (in mid-October):cool1: ....

yes there are tables there but didn't know they were just for walk ups.

Weve been given these tables with an ADR so Im not sure how accurate that is especially when the restaurant is busy!

Hi just got back yesterday and can confirm this we made our ADR and they had loads of people waiting round and kept showing them this piece of paper that had the 3 different kinds of seating that was available. We got the car seats but I had booked in advanced it wasnt busy inside either however the service this time around was rushed no clean table when we where taken to the table CM's arguing over who should of cleaned it etc.. but overall we really like the place its nice and food is decent.

I heard about those "normal" tables before. A while back on the boards, folks were complaining that after making ADR's months in advance, they check-in and then got seated at one of them - so I don't think they are kept aside for walk-ups exclusively.

We've tried a couple of times to get a walk-in ressie but have never been successful, so next year, I'm making an ADR! :upsidedow

Almost all the Disney restaurants have tables allocated just for walk ins... each restaurant location only takes so many advance reservations. You can call to make a reservation and get told 'fully booked' but that just means fully booked for reservations...

You can always do a walk in dining... although obviously there can be an extreme wait if its a popular one and a busy time of the day.

they were specifically told on the phone when they tried to make reservations for the same day that they should go to the podium and ask for the walk up tables.....that the walk up tables aren't included by the system when making advance reservations....

at the podium they were told they only give the walk up tables to people with ADRs if the people with the ADRs are willing to sit there...(since the ADRs are supposed to be for cars)...

most people with ADRs aren't willing to sit there...

anyway, both on the phone and at the podium they told her that the reservation system keeps those tables out of the calculation for what is available for advance reservation...

another interesting thing i didn't know about eating at the sci fi on the dining plan..

DD ate there 3 times during her trip (she got back 2 days ago)...
she was on the free dining plan...
all 3 servers they had told them that for their drink they could order both the milk shake and a soft drink...

they said that since the milk shake wasn't refillable, they could order the milk shake and then also a refillable soft drink....

so for their free dining meal they had an entree, dessert, a refillable diet coke and a milk shake....
i thought that was pretty nice...although way too much food....
in fact they were too full for dessert, but the servers all insisted they order a dessert anyway and packed it for them to take out...

personally i've always hated the food at the sci fi, but as i mentioned earlier, the chef at the sci fi specially prepared food for them (they're vegetarians)...
DD said it was outstanding (and why they came back there 3 times)...

Disneyholic family - thanks for all of the information. :thumbsup2 It's good to hear that Sci-Fi's service was above and beyond other locations to ensure your DD and friend had an enjoyable meal. :goodvibes

It has been a while since we've tried to get a table at Sci-Fi by just going to the podium the day of, but it's good to hear that it is possible. :)

it sort of falls under - you never know...personally, i never liked the food at the sci fi...and neither did DD...but she went there so her friend could see it (the cars and movies and all that)..
but then it turned out the chef prepared their food for them and it was really good....so they went back..

as for the servers, DD said she figures the CMs have an economic incentive to push more food on you....because you tip based on the total amount on the bill....so the more food on your bill, the more you'll tip...(even though you don't have to pay for it since you're on free dining)...

but who cares why they're being nice as long as they are :goodvibes

sorry ti hijak, but would a family of five get in the cars? There are 4 of us + toddler who could squeeze between me and dh. Has anyone of our configuration (:rotfl2: ) done this.?

i can't remember what the car configution is..
if you post this question on the restaurant board, i'm sure someone will know the answer...

Almost all the Disney restaurants have tables allocated just for walk ins... each restaurant location only takes so many advance reservations.

Although this is kind of true no Disney restuarants (except perhaps Sci-Fi it seems) have actual tables for walk ins! They do only book a certain number of ADR's but then if there is capacity in the restaurant at the time you come up to the podium they may accept walkins. I know definately when I worked there there was no actual tables set aside as that's not how the ADR system works (ADRs are next available table so therefore it wouldn't be fair to save tables just for Walk-ins)

When we had our ADR at Sci-Fi last summer they had nothing left for walk-ins, they were booked solid for a week, no cancellations either. Many families were turned away that day much to their disappointment. We were so glad we made our ADRs in plenty of time to get a table:thumbsup2

i agree, you definitely HAVE to book ADRs to be assured of a meal...

but if you happen to be at MGM, and are hungry, and you don't have an ADR, don't rule out the possibility of getting a table - even during free dining..

you haven't lost anything by asking if those walk up tables are available...
the worst that will happen is they'll say no...

nothing ventured, nothing gained...
