ok, so i admit it, im not normal. i have a strange phobia of eating in the dark. but, everyone wants to eat there. im nervous that i wont be able to eat my food. is it like a movie theater? i cant eat in movie theaters...aaarghh....i may need to get it to go?:worried:

If you are seated at a "car", there is subtle lighting in the "dashboard" that helps you see your food and read your menu.

It's dark, but not pitch-black in the restaurant.

It's not too dark. Kind of like being outside at night but with lights. You will be able to see your food. My kids loved this place!

I thought it was very dark and the food was bad considering how much they charge, even with DDP the food was not worth it!

This really depends on how good your "night vision" is. I know my mother (74 years old) would not even be able to make it to the table at Sci-Fi. I personally find it dark -- not quite as dark as a movie theater, but definitely dark. As another person said, once you're at the table, there's some lighting, and of course there is the movie on the screens, but honestly, if someone is not comfortable in a movie theater, I would skip Sci-Fi and instead eat at Prime Time Cafe (which is one of my favs) or another restaurant. Sci-Fi is really more for the atmosphere. The food is so-so at best. You're not really missing anything by skipping Sci-Fi. My two cents!

no choice, the fam wants to go, so go we will. i too would have chosen 50's.
i have no problem being in the dark, its the eating part im not too keen on.
i guess ill just have to see how it is, if worse comes to worse, i eat while they go on the next ride.

Never thought of it! I like seeing what I'm eating also. Hopefully there is enough light.

I don't think it's that dark, but I suppose it depends on your eyesight.

There are lights at each table so you can see your food and read the menu.

I see what you're saying and think this is your best option. When you get there and are seated, you can decide if you can eat. If not, like you said, you can grab something else when the family is done. Maybe you can get something to drink, though -- if so, choose something fun if you can, like a milkshake. :) I do think Sci-Fi is worth seeing because it's so unique, but if you can't eat, just know you're not missing a great meal. The food is merely adequate. I hope the rest of your trip is fun!

Don't worry, I'm not a fan of eating in darkness either, and I have eaten in Sci-Fi probably about 20 or 30 times already, it's not very dark at all, and inside the convertibles you sit in are lights, particularly surrounding your food, so it's not dark at all. It's a cool place and worth trying. The food is very normal fare but it's just a very cool idea with waiters and waitresses on roller skates, a huge screen to watch stuff that was popular in the 60s or maybe even earlier (I was born in the 80s but I still love it) and it really does look like a drive in theater. It's definitely worth it, and BE SURE TO MAKE RESERVATIONS!!! Hope you enjoy your trip!

It was actually pretty dark but I think the lights on our dashboard were going out because when I looked around everyone else's seemed brighter lol.

Here are some pics of the inside. It's definitely not that bad. You can always sit near the back by the kitchen where there is more light.

It isn't so dark that you can't see. We had no issue's in this area. Although I am not a huge fan of the food or menu here.

I love the Sci_Fi. Atmosphere is great and the food has always been fine - great at lunch.
It is dark in there but you can see most of your food. Here are two photos from 6 weeks ago.

well it doesnt look so bad. i think ill go with the assumption that im not eating, but if i find i can than it will be a nice surprise.

If it seems to dark for you to eat once you get there, how about ordering your food but asking them to pack it up to go. Then you'll already have your food when you leave and you can eat while they ride. :goodvibes

If you have been in the San Angel Inn (the Mexico pav.) then you've been in a restaurant that I feel is actually darker than Sci-Fi. I have had no problem seeing across the entire restaurant at Sci-Fi so it isn't "middle of the night with no moon up" dark and not as dark as a typical movie theater. If you want an area that has a little more light to it request to be seated near the back of the restaurant close to the kitchen. And there are some picnic tables and patio style tables that seem to offer more light while dining.

I don't think it is that dark, it is obviously darker than your typical restaurant. If you have been to EPCOT I think the best comparison would be San Angel Inn in Mexico. Order the Burger and Fries, it fits the atmosphere and from everything I have heard it's also the best on th menu. The onion rings and milkshake are really good to.
