St. Pat's is such a huge deal here that years ago they started to make it a holiday from school because no one would show up-they would all be at the parade! When we moved here 5 years ago and found this out, we were very confused. Savannah has the 2nd largest St. Pat's day parade in the country behind NYC. Does NYC close it's schools on St. Pat's Day? Anyone else?

Don't know, but I wish I was in Savannah attending the parade.
What streets do they use.
Milwaukee's was last Saturday.
Milwaukee don't like to tie up Wisconsin Avenue because of all the businesses and hospitals, so they moved it to the Saturday before.

Oh how I wish I was down there. I grew up in Savannah. I am now near Augusta. Every year, I marche dint he parade for something -- in high school i t was marching band. Hmm I need to find my parade medals (you get a special medal for being inthe parade). Last time I saw the Savannah parade in person -- 2007. :::cry cry cry:: it's just a Savannah "thing"

On the other hand, Augusta shuts down it's schools during the Master's tournament. The school's Spring Break coincides with that week. Some people rent out there houses and make a pretty penny. And guess where everybody in Augusta tends to go? Disney. LOL. A few years ago we planned a Disney trip during Master's week, and the AAA agent we were workign with said that she had already booked 20 trips alone for Master's time.

Not here and our school mascot is the "Irish" :lmao:.

Schools are open here and NYC. That would be nice to have the day off to go to the parade!

:scared1: NY closing for a parade? Are you kidding?

I HATED St. Pat's day in NY. A very popular Irish pub was downstairs in the lobby of our office bldg and the amount of drunkeness we had to witness was just ridiculous. Can people celebrate without getting pissy drunk? :confused3

No, not out of school (except DH20 and DD18 are out of college for spring break) but it is totally messing my my Y&R that I usually get to see at lunch! I don't care if there's a green parade!! I want my Y&R!!!!:headache:

LOL, I think on St. Pat's it's a requirement. Which is why this Irish yankee girl is going to see Alice in Wonderland instead of heading downtown. The news said they have almost 600 police officers down there, although it really never gets dangerous, just a lot of public peeing and rowdiness. No thanks.

The parade is held downtown, I don't know which streets. It pretty much immobilizes traffic, so a lot of businesses are closed down there today.

The Savannah St. Patrick's Day parade is awesome!

I love learning things on these threads. I would have never thought schools in Savannah would be closed. I think it's really interesting!

I also think it's really interesting that Augusta coincides its spring break with the Masters. I know about people renting their homes out, as there are many that do it here in Ohio for the Memorial Golf (PGA) Tournament.

Schools here are open, but Tucson schools close for two days every February for an event called "Rodeo Days". The city has a big parade and there are many rodeo/cowboy type things that go on all over town. When we first moved here, we were a bit confused about all the festivities. Closing schools for a rodeo?!?!??!? After being here for almost two years, we get it now.:rotfl:

Funny how different parts of the country celebrate different things.:upsidedow

NOTHING gets closed around here for St. Patrick's Day. but then again, things around here hardly get closed for ANYTHING. we're known as "the snow capital of the world" yet when we get blizzard-like conditions they still keep everything open :sad2:

Schools are open here in Mobile County, AL. Yay! They were closed Monday for teacher work day!

Boston had its parade on Sunday. Public schools in Boston are closed today but for evacuation day.

Schools here are open, but in Chicago schools were just closed for Pulaski Day. I never see the suburban schools closed, just the city schools on Pulaski Day (a couple of years ago I had to google to see what the fuss was all about).

My kids are in a suburban Chicago school and have Casmir Pulaski day off also!!

Chicago had their St. Patrick's day parade last Saturday. We have gone many times -- they dye the river green and have a great parade.

Nope, schools are open here as well. Some of the " real holidays" when schools are closed I think are stupid as well. Let alone for a parade.

No we're not closed, but the population here is about 90% Irish American. But today in school it is like a holiday. "Lucky" the leprechaun leaves all treats and things in the classroom when the kids go to specials and lunch. Bagpipers also come to the school and they have a parade at the school. The kids dress all crazy with green make up and hair.

It's pretty big here, our town is actually nicknamed the "Irish Riviera". The neighboring town has a huge St. Patty's day parade but that was 2 weekends ago. In the summer they actually have a "1/2 way to St. Patrick's day" bash, I believe the town gets together and starts planning the parade.

HA HA. In Savannah there is a statue dedicated to Casmir Pulaski and he plays a big mention in any tour you take of downtown Savannah. Heck, there's even Ft. Pulaski out near the beach, but in Savannah much less in GA we do NOT celebrate Pulaski Day.
