School supplies Thread

Man what a bizarre bunch of stuff--anyway thanks for the heads up I'm certain we'd be on vacation for much of the office max .01 sale so we'd no doubt have paid much more without knowing about this stuff.

whaen is the office max sale and whats on sale?

While I have no confirmation on it, last year the sale started the second full week of July and different things were on sale for .01 and .10 each week.
They had boxes of their brand crayons for .10
spiral notebboks for .10
rulars, pencils, two pocket folders with or without prongs for .01
Binders for .50
filler paper for .10
packs of pens for .10
glue sticks for .10

the limits were 10 of each
I remember taking each kid to get what he/she needed plus
DS's ex girlfriend and myself. Each kid got what was on their list and then after putting it in the car got back in line to get me more folders for my classroom--my students are high risk and don't usually have school supplies so I supply everything they need to be successful in my class and I make them leave it in class. This also enables me to give any extras to kids I know could be successful in other classes if they just had the materials. Last year you could have sent a kid to school with everything on the list for about $10 each--sure I skimped on the exact binder sizes that were requested knowing that a 1 inch binder would really be all they needed not 2 inch. I only knew that because DS had gone through the same 7th grade classes two years before and I had purchased the items exactly as described and they were not used--and for what I spent that really made me angry. DD had no issues with what was purchased so keeping it simple is a good idea but I know this year where the 1.5 inch binders are she really needs those to hold the materials she'll be given while taking HS Biology and Algebra in 8th grade.

Thanks so much to everyone posting the deals. Just got home from WalMart and was able to get 10 of the spiral notebooks for .05 each. :thumbsup2 I picked up a few other things, but couldn't get the kind of ruler ds needs (they're specific for some reason) because they weren't out yet. They had the big cardboard bins set up with the pictures, but nothing in them yet.

Also hit Walgreen's on the way home and got packs of the filler paper for .39 each. Dh did the Staples thing Sunday and got Purell and folders for .01 each, so we're in great shape!

Everything I've gotten this week combined with what I bought on clearance last year has ds all set! :thumbsup2

I may be wrong, but I was at Target and they were loading up the school supply area (where all the patio furniture used to be), so I wouldn't be surprised to see their Sunday ad this week filled with back to school stuff on sale. It's definitely worth a trip to Walmart first, though...hope to lure the family there tonight. Maybe I'm weird, but my first is going into kindergarten and I am so excited to buy school supplies (even though it's a full page list of everything but the kitchen sink...in multiples). :hippie:

Ok, how about JUMBO glue sticks? My DD is starting kindergarten and she needs 6 of them. Not just regular ones but the jumbo ones, which I found at Staples but it was $10 for a pack of 6.

I'd get her 6 of the 2 packs for .22 . That is the same amount of glue and they are only going to dump them all in one great big bin for everyone to use most likely anyway. Remember your lists are more of a "what teacher's wish kids would have list" than a everyone must have list.
However I believe I saw the jumbo ones at both Dollar Tree and Big Lots so maybe try there about 89 cents at Big Lots.

Disney Stores and Disney Shopping both have the new line of Disney lunchboxes and corresponding backpacks out! :)

I'm so glad you started this thread! I went to Walmart today and they had the spiral notebooks marked .10 each, crayola crayons .30, glue sticks .32 and I can't remember what else, but when I got to the register they rang up:

notebooks .05
crayola basic markers .88
crayola 24ct. crayons .22
Elmers 2pk glue sticks .22
Elmers glue bottle .22
#2 pencils 24pk .92
composition books .50

and I don't know if it was a good price or not, but I got a set with a compass and protractor for 1.88 since I'm sure DD will need it. I didn't buy alot since I don't know what all the kids will need, but these are the basics I usually count on and if they don't end up needing them I'm sure we'll use them at home.

I would do that but the jumbo ones are 1.27oz and the regular ones are either .21oz or .25oz. The school supply list is not so much a teacher's wish list but a what is expected from your child by the second day of school.

For you experienced back to school folks - how do you label your childrens supplies and/or clothing? I don't want to put anything on the clothing that I can't easily take off later as most of the clothing I have I pass on to my sisters daughter. I saw a website called www.stuckonyou.biz that had some neat labels for shoes, clothing and supplies but was wondering if there were less expensive idea's that work well?

Im looking for book covers the stretchy kind. Staples has them for 3.99 I bought just one for my DD, thats to expensive to buy 6. Toys r us was suppose to have them for 89 cents and they ran out.

Also Toys r us has backpacks in and you can get a free lunch bag if the backpack is over 12.99.

^^^Try Target. Many think they may start having their sales next week. Two summers ago I bought quite a few from them. I can't remember the price but but it was under a dollar. At the end of the year when my daughter takes them off of her textbooks and brings them home, I just wash them and they are ready for the new school year. I actually still have a few brand new ones!

Me too, I got them 4/$1 and I stocked up for when my younger ones start school but in the mean time the older ones can use it.

I get my clothing labels from www.prontolabels.com and if your school can set up an account with them and they get around $1 for each order placed. There really is no work involved in it and they are cheaper than the ones mentioned in the pp.

5 inches? Really? Last year DD(9th grade) needed 2 2" binders....when those 2 went into her backpack almost nothing else would fit in there. I can't imagine a 5inch binder. That's insane!

I was mistaken. I need 2 3inch binders and the tab thingy majigies to go in them with pockets according to DD 11 who is charge of putting together the folders for our family.

I went to walmart today and as usual the prices I have seen here were higher in the store then I saw here. They were also out of the glue for 30 cents. We did get the colored pencils, roseart markers and index card boxes and some highlighters. It came to about 13 dollars. Can't wait to see what staples has on sale this week.

GRRRR we didn't have that much and our sales sure weren't that good. The walmart here is a scary place. I would much rather go to south central LA for lunch then shop at our walmart. So one trip is enough for me, but it seems they could coordinate supplies and prices nationwide.

I would like to thank everyone for there heads up on the sales. I have been checking walmart sales ads online and haven't seen anything. We start school on Monday... yes, July 14th. We go year round but the difference for me this year is I have two in Middle School, One in elementary and my baby is going to preschool 3 days a week for speech therapy. We don't have a staples, but did take advantage of the backpack/lunch box deal at Toys. Just a heads up for anyone with more than 2 kids if you order the backpack/lunchbox deal on-line you can only get 2 free lunch boxes w/your backpacks per order.

This thread is awesome. I don't need school supplies since I bought them from the school for next year, but I need to stock up on colors for the 2 year old.

I got my son some at Walmart over the weekend, they were .25 each! They weren't marked that price so I was surprised when they rang up on sale. I found them with all the other back to school supplies.

I went back to Walmart yesterday because they overcharged me on my 40 pack neon erasers. They were marked 22 cents and they charged me 97 cents and they paid me $5 for overcharging me. I never knew Michigan had a MI bounty law that if they over charge you they have to pay you $5. I will be looking at ALL my reciepts more carefully now.
