School shooting in CO

I am a firm believer that nobody but law enforcement should have a gun.

The fact is that gun ownership makes you somewhere between 4-7 times more likely to be shot by that very gun. In 2011, Americans were 10 times more likely to be shot because they were arguing with someone than they were defending their home from a home intruder. For every time a gun is used in self-defense in the home, there are 7 assaults or murders, 11 suicide attempts, and 4 accidents involving guns in or around a home.

There is no reason to own a gun unless you intend to use it to shoot another human being.
Hunting?
Target shooting?

I don't think of those as valid reasons to own a gun. I realize people do. But it wouldn't happen in my house, and my (not yet born) children would not be allowed in a house of someone who hunted or went target shooting.

Well, in NYC that might be all well and good but down here if hunters didn't have guns, my house would be taken over with deer. Seriously.

And if my kids weren't allowed in the home of a hunter, they would have a very boring life without friends. It isn't about having a gun, its they way the gun is stored and secured.

Not having guns to hunt just isn't reasonable.

Agree 100%.

That's great if you believe that and your children are safe. Hundreds of children die every year in accidents where their parents believed the gun was stored and secured.

I target shoot and have done all my life. Currently all I use is a .177 air rifle but I have commonly used .22 rimfires. I've also used L85s but not with any pleasure.

The interesting thing here is the TYPE of weapon you use to target shoot - or hunt. Some are more appropriate than others.

Also interesting is the issue of storage. Even my air rifle is stored in a secure lockdown at the range and since I don't target shoot in my house, I'm not fussed by this. With my .22 I took it a step further to reflect the nature of the weapon and locked munitions up in a separate stronghold. Again, it didn't hinder me so it was ok with me.

More die in car accidents. Do you own or ride in a car?

You teach gun safety at a young age. They know from the time they are old enough to understand "no" that guns are not to be touched.

This is a classic strawman argument. The purpose of a car is to transport. The purpose of a gun is to kill. Again, you can live as you want. And every year, more and more innocent people die.

That is what the government and the upper 1% want: take away your guns, reduce your liberties, bring in Marshall law and control you.

I don't know any info about this shooting but has anyone ever noticed when something like this happens it always seems to be a drill that goes live.

Drill that goes live? What?

What about the homes of those where the parents own a gun due to their jobs? Such as police officers?

I remember quite a few stories of children getting their hands on these weapons as well. It all comes down to how well the individual stores their weapons.

My kid isn't allowed to go to homes with guns. Never been a problem. Tons of friends. We just don't have any friends who hunt or target shoot. Like-minded people tend to gravitate toward one another.

Guess I'm just saying there are plenty of us out there that don't allow our kids around guns. I don't believe it's as matter of fact as some like to believe. Most people I know would be highly uncomfortable in the presence of a firearm.

Here is a question and I am actually really interested to hear your answer but... how do you know none of those homes have guns? I mean, I would guess you could ask, but how do you know they are telling you the truth? I honestly think many people would be shocked as to which homes have guns in them and which do not. It's not like most owners have them just sitting around the house.

But you are saying something should be that is impossible. You said that no one should have guns except police officers and military.

Hunting serves a purpose. It's not just a sport. It provides food and it keeps animals from being overpopulated and suffering as a result. I would say that is a much more important purpose than to transport.

Police officers do not need to store their guns at home. The majority can and do safely store their weapons at work in Canada.

Maybe in Canada... but that isn't what happens with most officers that I have known in the US (including my own father). And the poster I quoted was in the US (NY to be exact) so I was curious based off of that. I have never met an officer that would be comfortable leaving their service weapon at the station. They are responsible for it at all times.

Then again, some officers in some areas actually drive their squad cars home.

I don't hunt nor does dh. But 99% of the population here does.

Do you live in the city of Austin? It may be very different in a rural area.

I don't allow my kids around guns (well my sons are adults so they can do what they want) either. DD has always known if there is a gun in the house, leave it alone. Its not hard to teach them if they grow up knowing it.

Every police officer I know has a weapon at home.
