I teach third grade, and I need to come up with a class project for our school auction. It can be Christmas related or not. I know there were great ideas posted here before, but I can't find them. Any ideas?

We just had an auction at school to raise money for one of our students who has cancer. Some of the top sellers were:
movie night - gift card for blockbuster, popcorn package, candy etc
family fun night- board games, a book, a family movie
scrapbook kits - an album, stickers, paper pack, adhesive
christmas - ornaments, night before christmas book,
baby- onsies, blankets, toys, towels
homemade goodies- pie rack and pumpkin scented candles. A teacher left a certificate for a homemade pie, that she made.
tool box- goodies for dad
sports basket- our local college is UCONN and that was really popular

Our PTO collected enough scrapbook stuff that I made 4 baskets. Also ask for donations from stores. We got a lot of stuff for free that way.

By class project do you mean something that the class makes as a whole or thingas that the class members bring in to donate to the auction

We have done many of the same baskets as BernardandMissBianca and we have raised a good amount of money...
We had sports baskets.. One for our school, one for NFL, one for NBA
family night - movie, soda, popcorn, bowls, cups, napkins
game night - soda, popcorn, candy, bowls, cups, napkins, and 2 small games (boggle and cards)
Thanksgiving- non-perishable goodes, napkins, table cloth, candles, a home made beautiful centerpiece (I won that one!)
Christmas - non-perishables, napkins, table clothes, candy canes, a box of greeting cards, candles
Tool box - misc. tools and a few business cards to local handy men
Car wash basket- towels, washclothes, cleaning supplies.
I love the idea of a scrapbook basket.. so I'm going to push that one a little harder this year..
Also, we did a picnic basket - everything for a picnic, crackers, water, table cloth, napkins, bug spray, wet wipes, paper plates.

We have done those but also a
sports basket- tickets to a game, small grill, spices, and some balls
camping basket- tent, grill, sleeping bags, ect
grocery basket- gift certificates for the town grocery stoire - each child in the grade brought in 2 dollars so it was for $300.

If you need something for them to make their are a lot of great Christmas ornaments that can be put together- you can always make an extra of each of you crafts and use them in a basket.

If it is something you have to make, an easy one my Dneice did was make flower pens. They got cheap Bic pens donated and bought different kinds of artificial flowers. Using floral tape they attached the flowers to the pen. They sold single stems or by the dozen. They used it to raise funds for cancer research. It is something that you can have enough so everyone can buy and you are not relying on one person to purchase. Each child in your class can make a few. They sold them for a $1.00 each or a dozen for $10.00.
If you have the time or inclination, you can also decorate flower pots to plant them in. Use cheap beans as the soil so the pens will stand upright.

Those pens are cute! I should have been clearer, it is a project my class makes. Some past projects have included trees that the children decorated with handmade ornaments, a tablecloth with their handprints, etc. The more original the higher price we get. Some things have had bids as high as $700. I thought about a decorated wreath, but I don't know.....I'm just looking for something different.

Do any of your parents sew? One of my DS's classes did a quilt that had each child's handprint on it, along with their names, in individual squares. It was then set together with a solid color and quilted - not hard if you know how. That went over really well.

What kind of budget do you have to work with for this project? That might help us narrow things down.

Some ideas:
-force narcissus or amaryllis bulbs in a shallow dish w/pretty stones
-get a pottery store to donate/give discount on items to paint and fire - a platter and a bowl done similarly would be neat
-original artwork holiday cards - use stamps or watercolors, cardstock - each child could do one or two - make them all occasion
-Do a holiday table "setting" include napkin rings - we did these when I was a kid - there's a pattern for felt poinsettia rings and generic placecards -- Mom, Dad, Grandma, Grandpa, brother, sister, etc. use same materials as for cards and a centerpiece - candles, flowers, etc.

Think about projects you do in school already because of learning value and see if any of those would double for this.

Thanks for all the great ideas. I can spend up to $50. I thought about the napkins, table runner, etc. I have to decide soon, maybe I will check with Family Fun. It is just so stressful; we all want to come up with a project that is made by the kids, has the "awwww" factor, and will get the high bids. I'll let you all know what I decide.

You could have you students make a scrapbook that someone would just need to pop pictures in and journal- there are some good books out there on scrapbooking with kids. Brainstorm ideas as a class and then show them how to do some neat things like make a shaker box for their pages- each child could make a 2 page spread- that would make a good size scrapbook.

How about cards? They could make a set of Christmas, Birthday, Get Well, or mixed assortments. I know handmade cards always go well at our auctions. They usually group them in sets of 12.

I've had one group of third graders decorate a real mailbox with paintings. Large wooden storage boxes have also been popular. Another teacher found a white rocking chair and all of the students decorated that. I've also seen it done with a director's chair since that is less expensive.

A friend of mine bought 2 items from her kids auction. One was a mirror put on a board iwith individual tiles around it that the kids had each painted. The other was a chalkboard with small drawings on the outside of the frame,

A friend bought a pottery plate--huge one--that had all the kids handprints around the edge. It had been painted, fired, the kids added their prints, glazed and fired again. It went for a good amount as every parent wanted it.

How about some tote bags with the kids handprints?

Just to let everyone know we have decided to decorate a bench. We will be painting it, but I haven't decided what the theme is yet. I actually would love to do the scrapbook idea, but our 6th grade class always does that. I will let you know how it goes. Thanks for all the great ideas!

OP here! I just wanted to let everyone know that our bench was a big hit at the auction. I loved it, and it went for $475.00! I was extremely happy !
