Middle DS is doing a research project on Scotland for his social studies course. One of the things they have to discuss is the currency used. His school has very few books available on Scotland so most of his research has been on the internet. :surfweb: His research has shown that Scotland uses both the Pound and the Euro. Can someone please tell us what the preferred currency is?

TIA for your help.

Scotland is part of UK and uses the Pound.

As in other areas of UK heavily visited by overseas tourists a lot of shops may accept Euros with the exchange rate calcualted at the till.

Scottish banks produce their own bank notes but regular UK money is also used interchangably.

(Sometimes shops in other UK countries will accept the Scottish notes but they don't have to.)

We are part of the UK as said already so our currency is the Pound Sterling and generaly while Euros may be accepted in some shops in Edinburgh and Glasgow the Euro is a foreign currency as would the US dollar be if you tried to use them in the majority of shops.

The Bank of Scotland , the Royal Bank of Scotland and the Clydesdale bank all produce "Scottish" bank notes but they are Sterling Pounds and accepted (in theory) all over the UK.

Something he may find interesting is that Scotland still uses 1 pound notes. They're not very common now and they look a little bit like your dollar bills but the rest of the UK doesn't use 1 pound notes.

Scottish currency is no different to the rest of the UK and it is illegal for anyone to refuse to accept our notes just because they are printed by a different bank.

Another piece of information...

In England, when the Scottish notes are paid into a bank they are counted the same but taken out of circulation ie they will not be given to another person that comes in for cash, then sent back to Scotland to start their journey again.

Scottish currency can be refused in England and Wales as they are not officially legal tender in those countries.

Another piece of trivia is that only Bank of England notes under £5 are legal tender in Scotland. ( There are only coins now with the removal of £1 not). However BofE notes of larger denominations are widely accepted in the belief that they are legal tender in Scotland.

All Scottish Banks have the right to produce bank nots in Scotland. Only three choose to do so - Royal Bank of Scotland, Bank of Scotland and Clydesdale.
