School Holiday Authorisation

Thats good to hear!

We are planning on taking DD out twice whilst she is in reception for a week each time (one for October half term and one for May half term) however as she legally doesn't have to be a school until the following September I think we will be fine - now the year after :rolleyes1

All years in shools carry out some kind of assessment, so that the childs education can be measured throughout their whole school life. Information is used for League Tables!

I absolutely agree. :thumbsup2 I was also 'forced' to book a week earlier because of the hotel and park ticket price, which was several hundred £££ less by leaving a week earlier. At the time I wasn't able to see flight prices, but once they were released, it also would have cost me an additional few hundred for the same flights. It is very difficult. If I had the choice I would never take DD out of school, but in reality if I didn't, we would only get a holiday every 2-3 years. Now that is more than some people get, but since I am the adult in the house and the sole provider for all expenses, and the care and wellbeing of myself and DD as a family and as individuals, I have exercised my good judgement that regular trips to Disney are good for our relationship, our health and a great experience. I go without plenty else to pay for it. I will never forget our first trip. We were always close, but that was when our relationship changed from purely parent-child to parent-child and friends. It added a new dimension and to me, that is priceless so the only way to do this is in term time, so be it. If there is another alternative that is practical and allows us the same without her missing school, even better. However as yet, just like T16GEM says, there is no other way.

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2I completely agree 100%. In fact, I've said this right from the start of having kids.

My husband works incredibly hard to earn for our family - he deserves a rest and a time to recharge and chill out. Frankly, our family does not revolve around our children having a 100% attendance record, particularly if the kids don't spend any other time off and are not struggling and/or an important school year. I have amazing memories of holidays with my Dad when, due to his high pressure job, holidays were the only time he truly relaxed.

Really the cause of all of this are the travel companies cashing in. It really makes me mad as it means so many families and children are growing up without those memories and the bond that forms. Last year Virgin cashed in on the BA strike announcement as straight after it was on the news, our £2500 quote shot up to £8000 for the same flight (that was for 3 seats, flights only :scared1:)

Zeebs, this one's for you, hon:

:dance3::cheer2::banana::banana::woohoo::yay::dance3:

And from all your DIS buddies: :grouphug:

Now you go and pour a very LARGE glass of whatever you like to drink ;), put your feet up and enjoy thinking about your trip and the precious time and fun you will have with your family :)

It's supply and demand - more people want to go at that time of year, so the seats on flights are more valuable. I don't agree with it morally but in terms of business, it's pretty much the only way to make money..

I'm a teacher with no kids and so we're stuck going in the school holidays. I can't imagine how much we would save on our holiday by going in school term time but we just don't look! ;) This year we couldn't find any flights to Orlando in the holidays that we could afford so that's the holiday out of the window. Maybe next year.

Just got Cullen's request for leave back this afternoon it has been approved. Yee haaa.

Now back to the planning.

i'm dreading putting our request in (for May also). we booked our holiday last June. when Ds bought home the school calendar in Sept, i noticed that it says no holidays during may and june (sats style testing). before i realised this, i had deliberately chosen week beginning 9th May because thats when yr 6 are doing their SATS, so i assumed that the emphasis would be on yr6, and that they would not be doing testing of other yrs during the same 'busy' week. My sons school is also the only one locally that will only authourise 5 days per school yr; all the others allow 10 days (2wks). we'll still be going even if they don't authourise it, but i am now worried about the consequences. last time they didn't do anything (sep 09), but i wonder what will happen this time as we are taking it during the 'banned' peroid

me too, my partner could take holiday any time but not me .. it sucks really ... it really is best not to look or I get really annoyed at how much more we have to pay in school holidays!

Same for us - if we could have flown a day earlier at Christmas, we not only would have saved money but also actually got to go on our trip :rotfl2:

Before I was a teacher we had one trip end of April/early May so we know exactly how much more it is costing us :scared1:
