My DD9 came home with an overview of the lesson plan for this semester in her Gifted and Talented Class. It is titled "The Basics of Population Education" printed directly from Population Connection's web site www.populationconnection.org. I knew absolutely nothing about this organization until last night. I now know more than enough to realize I am not happy with their agenda, and even less happy with the fact that it appears my dd's gifted and talented program is relying on their recommended curriculum and activities for the next semester's lessons. They are support population control, including abortion and eugenics. They are a political activist group that lobbies the legislature to further their agenda. The groups founder, Paul R Ehrlich wrote "The Population Bomb" back in the 60's predicting all kinds of famine and deaths, which never came true. Despite the fact that the group claims to not believe in forced sterilization and coerced abortions, he is quoted as "We must have population control at home, hopefully through a system of incentives and penalties, but by compulsion if voluntary methods fail". I have put in a call to the teaching team to discuss the curriculum and review the materials/lesson plans. No call back as of yet.

Would this upset you guys? Or am I over reacting?

I'm expecting the flames, but I am asking an honest question here. I don't want my dd coming home saying I should have never brought her into this world because she is taxing the earth's resources or that she now doesn't want children because of what is being taught in her gate program. I thought public school curriculum could not be politically motivated?!

I'd have issues with my child being taught eugenics.

If she's being exposed to something that you don't approve of - that would not have also been contained in the regular school curriculum - yes, I think you have the right to be upset and voice your objections to the powers that be..

At 9 I would be very upset. At 17 when she could more clearly argue a different view it might be okay.

I appreciate the opinions. I'm still waiting for the teachers to return the call, so that I can get a clearer picture of what is going on.

I'd be interested in hearing how this relates to gifted education or school curriculum in general. There are many ways to teach population development without discussing abortion and eugenics, especially with 9 year olds.
