So this year I'm trying to get involved more and join more clubs. It's kind of hard though because sometimes they have the meetings at the same time as others and they intefere alot..

Also, you always have to pay to be a member and sell candy and do all that good stuff.

This year I'm thinking about joining:

  • Sophomore Class
  • HOSA [already joined]
  • DECA [have to, im in the class]
  • SGA
  • Italian Club
  • Spanish Club
  • Key Club

Anyone else thinking about joining clubs at their school? Or are they joining any of the above clubs?
Because I've heard alot of them are internationl/national and are all around the country...

Wait, why in God's name do you have to pay to be in a club? Ah, edit, I now see DECA...nevermind. Oh, and aren't you in the "sophomore class" just by graduating in '10?

But to answer your question, I am in school clubs. I'm VERY committed to all of the below so anything else would take up massive amounts of extra time that I really don't have. I'm usually at school everyday much later just because of these things, I can't afford to do any more:

member of AFS
associate editor of WISP (lit. magazine)
starting the school newspaper
Interact (volunteer)
NHS (or will be when I get inducted this year)

That's a lot of clubs! I'm just on the volleyball and track teams. I'm supposed to join the International Club, though. I'm not joining Key Club because community service isn't really my thing. I am a member of the French National Honor Society, though and I pay dues for that.

Well, alot of them require you to because you go to competitions and you also have to pay a membership fee. I dont know its like that in high school. Normall its $10 for a club, but HOSA was $30 for me and DECA is $30 also and the trips out of the state are like $300-400!

And Sophomore Class is optional. You get to choose if you want to be in it, and its where they raise money for your class year so you can have a really nice prom and enough money to pay things for when your in your senior year.

I was in
bowling club
spanish club
NHS
Choir
Band
Theather
Tech-Theathre
Yearbook
Christian Body

I'm in Art Club, Beta Club, Yearbook, and I'm considering applying to be a peer mediator. I know I'll get it, it's just whether or not I have time. Granted, it's only during the school day and I get to skip class, so I probably will. To be honest, beyond FCA and Girls on Track (Fellowship of Christian Atheletes and a goody two shoes non-competitive running thing, yuck), that's pretty much every club you can join at my school. There's show choir, but I can't sing. I'm on the tennis team, too, though.

What's Beta Club?

We have to pay to get in all of our clubs.
For all the stuff we do we need money.

I'm in at the moment.
All of these I believe are worldwide.
FFA [Future Farmers of America] - $10
FCCLA [Family career and community leaders of America]-$12
FEA [Future Educators of America] -$10

I want to join BPA.
And those are the only ones I really know of. There is a couple more, but none that I know much about or interested in.

I plan on joining SAGA (Straight and Gay Alliance) and NHS this year. I was in French club last year, but we didn't do anything because my teacher was frustrated that no one helped clean up the concession stands at sporting events when the French club did them in previous years. o_O

But if French club is actually going to do French-like things this year, I might join that as well.

I'm in band also, if you count that as a club. :p

That's very strange...at least for around here. I know that DECA has a bunch of competitions and such so there is expected to be a fee there but I'm shocked that you have to pay a membership fee for other clubs. If my hs did that, I wouldn't be doing a thing. Not to offend you or your school (or any others for that matter who also do this) but I think it's pretty sad that they're making you pay to become more involved.

There's one of those?!
Is it if you really want to become a farmer when you grow up?
No offense, its just funny to me.
What do you do there?

Ohh and we have FEA and SAGA here too!

Well, its not like they're forcing you to join the clubs, but I see what your saying. You also have to consider that they need it because they also try to raise money for the club so the members can go on trips and competitions. If it was free then when it came time for trips everyone would be going...

I am marching band and drama club. I love them both(but band more then drama)

haha.
Just agricultural buisness.
No it doesn't mean that you want to grow up to be a farmer! :p
We like judge meat and land, and entomology.
We are going to be welding! :scared1:
Scary thought. We haven't done much and I don't know a whole lot but I hear it's fun.

I get that but what about fundraising? School funding should be going to some of those clubs that you mentioned - at least SOMETHING. I understand paying for trips, I completely understand that, but it's hitting the member doubly for paying to get in and then, in turn, paying for the trip that the membership fee supposedly provided. I agree that they're not forcing you into them, but I am gladly making the leap to say that I'm sure that is forcing people out of them. The clubs that I am part of are increadibly close to my heart but...wait, I'll give an example:

WISP, the literary magazine that I previously mentioned, is INCREADIBLY important to me. We currently have 5 people on staff. FIVE.That's a PATHETIC number. That 51 year long school tradition would be DEAD if we had to pay just to be a member who is working very very hard to keep the thing alive.

Another example: With AFS, we go to WDW at the end of the year with the foreign exchange students. We pay for that trip. We pay nothing to get in, for I don't find it logical to do so and then go around and pay the cost of the trip minus 10 dollars. None of that makes sense to me.

At the moment I am in Key Club.
I plan on joining Caring For Kids and Critters once it is available.

Key Club I had to pay $15 to get in but I really don't mind because all the community service I will be doing and helping with the school is soo worth it. lol

Whats that?

Well, I really have no idea why they make us pay, but we do if we want to become a member. Thats just the bottom line; we have to pay. But I really want to join so I go for it. :)

Oh, welding is very fun! Just make sure that that (those) day(s) you bring hand wipes or sanitizer or scented hand lotion or something of that sort. It's very fun but very smelly! It takes a lot to get it off of your hands.
