School Board just cancelled day off in February

I love living on the west coast. I didn't even know that schools had make up days, or that some places had them built in to the year, just in case.

The OP's school - actually school board - is completely sane. They're taking away part of the President's Day weekend, not the actual day :teeth: Where many locations have off the entire week that encompasses that day, apparently her town merely (normally) gets just a long weekend.

OOps I misunderstood, they actually have off more then what I thought.

Given the extreme weather that many areas have had this winter, what the school board did was perfectly reasonable. Schools are required to have a certain number of days of instruction each year, and there are other boundaries that prevent them from extending school into the summer. They can't just unilaterally tell state law to go to heck.

I wouldn't worry one bit about it. You had previous plans & took into account that school was closed.

School is now open & you can't change your plans without penalty. Contact the school & their teachers & inform them of the days they'll be absent. They won't be the only ones.

We have 3 built in snow days (MLK Day, Presidents Day, and a day in May) and any after that is made up at the end of the year. On our district calendar it also states the school board has the right to make changes as needed.
Three school districts in very North Georgia were going to have school on MLK Day and were flamed on television about it. The television station even interviewed someone in King's family about it. One even made the Drudge Report. Two of the three backed down and it became a moot point when the roads were still icy on Monday and still unsafe.

Here in the north it is not uncommon to have MLK Day as a make up day, especially with the winters we have. It has always been that way in my area. :confused3

Our local district does this every year, it's been that way since I was in elementary school. It's usually President's Day and then spring break days. If we had vacation plans, I wouldn't cancel them, but we never make plans because it's a given here.

My boys go to a small private school, and they do the same thing, except our "spring break" is already only a Friday and a Monday to start with. They had school on MLK day to make a day, we were only allowed 3 that didn't have to be made up, and we've used 5.

I think (I know it used to be) school had to be in session 180 days for the year. We used to be allowed 5 calamity days that didn't have to be made up, this year they changed it to 3. Any days missed over that have to be made up sometime, either by doing what the OP has run into, going on days that were scheduled for spring break, or adding days on to the end of the school year. The bad thing is, when the snow melts, we sometimes end up missing more days due to flooding.

There was a bru ha ha about 3 districts in a Georgia town: They wanted to have a make up day on MLK day. People were in a uproar-how dare it be on MLK day. Even though I am sure not a whole bunch of kids were going to do some sort of community service in his honor and honestly, I don't think he would want kids to be out of school on his birthday. Anyway, the school board backed down because it was such an uproar and Rev Sharpton and Rev. James got in the mix.

Really? which do you want? do you want your kids to have an education or do you want it to be on your terms? It amazes me how many parents aren't involved in their kids education, but when it comes to a make up day-OP this isnt directed at you just in general-oh, no my kid isn't going to do it,etc.

Just like that last days of school, not much happens aside from certain grades graduation, people take their kids out early, but if they had full days of learning, some parents yet again would be like Oh they should have fun the last few days, just can't win.

Going to school on MLK day might work in the north but right here in Georgia this close to the King family in Atlanta? Probably not a great idea.

This is the first year of our school district going to the 160 day calendar. Maybe next year they will plan for a 162 or 163 to add some potential snow days.

I think for me the irritation comes from the focus on the number of days. If going to school one or two or three more days was going to make some major difference in their level of academic achievement over the course of the year I'd say sure but...........doesn't. It comes down to nothing more than a few more hours of time spent in each subject.

You know they might just skip some of the fluff that's already on the schedule for the remainder of the school year and replace it with actual learning. You know all those assemblies and parties and field days and movies........... Gee, now there's a thought:idea:

I wouldn't be angry about it. Just keep your plans and don't think twice about it. Your kids won't be the only ones absent.

I cancelled the February three day/two night trip but the March 18 - 20 is on. Sorry Teach, we can only live without Disney for so long. Besides my DD8 is a straight A student anyway. I think she can miss one day.

You do have a point about the fluff stuff. Field day last year, it is bad when kids said they would rather be learning something or having related arts, cause field day sucked:scared1: and I was there volunteering and it did suck raw eggs, but the cookout was nice.

However, the schools are mandated to have some many days or hours per school year. And like Bicker wrote they just can't say heck no we're not going to do it.
