Hello,

My daughter is a senior and will attend a small college next fall. She applied for their full ride scholarship by the deadline (which was mid dec 2019). 6 people are awarded. But she got the email message in January that said she was not selected. It was a long shot, but worth applying.

Well, On Thursday afternoon she got a call from the college that there were some changes and wanted to interview her for the scholarship . 😲😲😲

They told her it would be just 15 min via zoom and recorded to send to the rest of the committee. She had the interview on Friday - I tried hard not to eavesdrop. But I think it went well. :)

Anyway, I’m freaking out about how awesome this would be, but also trying not to count on anything.

Anyone have insight into scholarship awards? Or what her chances are? Does this happen? :) I saw on the college page only 5 people were announced so far as winners.

It sounds as if one of the 6 original receivers decided to go to a different college or something similar.
Also seems she was on the short list for the first shot which is why she's been invited to rejoin the process.
Congratulations on her opportunity and may all turn out as she wants!

Oh that is exciting! Congratulations to your daughter and best of luck to her. Did they mention when she would hear?

The only scholarships we were involved with were merit scholarships, which were rather cut and dried; either you met the grade/test score requirements, or you didn’t. Score ranges were listed on a chart showing the exact amount you would receive for the range in which your scores fell.

The scholarship your daughter is in the running for sounds much more involved, and they are probably looking at many aspects of her schooling and other activities. It is great that she is being considered, and hopefully the fact that she is already scheduled to attend there shows her interest in the school, and will help her chances. Good luck and let us know what happens!

No insight, but good luck to your daughter.

dd (now graduated) would apply for every scholarship her university offered if she met the criteria. there were a couple of years where she got notification over the summer that one she was previously not awarded was now being offered to her. we always figured it was b/c the original recipient declined or decided to go elsewhere.

best of luck to your dd-is the 'full ride' for the entire degree or just freshman year? i ask b/c dd had zero cost freshman year b/c of scholarships but most were only good for a year or two at best.

They said within a week she would hear back :) I’m more anxious than she is. I’ll have to find stuff to keep me distracted from being impatient. Lol!

This happened to ds20. He applied for his college's larger scholarships-there are full rides, 100% tuition and 75% tuition. He was originally awarded a 75% tuition scholarship. Around this same time his senior year, he got a call that someone had turned down one of the 100% tuition scholarships and they would like to award it to him. So it is definitely possible! Best of luck to your daughter.

Oh! This is good to know. Did he have to interview?

Waiting is the hardest -- I already did this once back after she applied. LOL!

Sounds like maybe one of the students who was awarded decided to go elsewhere or to take a gap year because of the concerns about the pandemic, and that your daughter was a strong enough contender in the initial selection to be considered for the newly-freed award. Good luck to her!

He didn't have to interview again, however they interview the candidates for all three scholarships at the same time so it's the same people doing all the interviews.
