Hi everyone, our first trip to AUL is coming up and I think I may be too late (already) in booking and reserving things both on/off site. Is there an Aulani tips thread, or should I just ask here? This is our first trip to Aulani and our first time back to Oahu in many years - last time they were just building the Ko Olina resort next door.

Here are the events that I think I need to book but I can't quite find the info easily:

On site:
(and how far in advance can/should we book)
Luau - when does it happen, any tips?
Aunty's Beach House - 1.5hour free time, plus paid activities
Spa

Off site:
We are passing on Pearl Harbor this time.
Hanauma Bay ? Last time we were here was our honeymoon, we just drove up, parked and snorkeled...
Are there other off-site things that now need a reservation or some advance planning? We will have a rental car.

Thanks!

The luau often books up well in advance. You might be too late already. The free sessions at Aunties were booking up within a day of the reservations window opening. Not sure what the status is right now. For both, there is info on Aulani’s site
(https://www.disneyaulani.com/activities/shows-entertainment/?lang=en )
but this is definitely the right forum here to ask.

Hanauma Bay has required reservations for many years now. And the Diamond Head hike just added a reservations system. If you’re planning on a Kualoa Ranch activity, they book up well in advance also.

The spa is one of my favorite spas anywhere ... you definitely need to book in advance. I think its 60 days out.

What about restaurant dining (at the resort)? Are there reservations that fill before arrival?

Your post is very similar to what I’m going through right now. First trip to Aulani and first time to Hawaii in years, also our kids’ first trip. I’ve been looking into a lot of the same things and have found that things book up EARLY. We’re going next month and there are some things I wasn’t able to get, but I booked some and have learned for next time.

- Luau: books up early. I booked the luau back in February and by then, there was only 1 night remaining for the week we’re going, and VIP was already sold out. Other luaus seem to have more availability though. I was considering the Toa one at Waimea Valley which has a lot more availability (they also have a daytime one), but decided I wanted to do the Aulani one on our first stay.

- Dining: books starting 30 days in advance and it goes fast. I checked late morning west coast time for a few days, and Makahiki breakfast times would be all gone already, so I got up in the middle of the night to book our character breakfast when it opened (midnight Hawaii time). I think we’re skipping Ama Ama this time since our kids are little, but the times leading up to sunset booked fastest. I booked a couple of reservations off-property and those also seemed to be booking up quickly (I got Monkeypod and Mina’s for now). But you can also try to walk up and get a table. Our friends did that first thing in the morning for Makahiki.

- Cabanas: all sold out for the week we’re there, and turns out they can be booked as soon as you have a reservation number. They said you can go down each morning to get added to a waitlist in case one opens up.

- Sunset portrait session: I booked this a couple weeks ago, and there was only 1 session left at the end of our stay available. But they do have Photopass photographers on the beach for the hour before sunset every night so that’s another option that doesn’t need to be booked. They also added me to a waitlist for a sunset session earlier in our stay.

- Aunty’s: All of the free slots were booked by the time I got to it recently, since they can be booked 3 months in advance. A lot of the paid slots were booked too, but just this week they opened up morning paid sessions so I was able to book that. Similar to the cabanas, you can go down first thing in the morning (7:45 was what I was told) and try to get on a waitlist for the free sessions.

- Spa: Seems to have more availability than the other things and doesn’t need to be booked quite as far in advance if you’re flexible on timing, but if you have a specific timeframe (a lot of morning appointments were already booked), I’d get going on that asap. I booked the Luau Bound package for my older kids and the ideal time slot I would’ve preferred before the luau was already gone, but I was able to get an earlier one.

- DVC: There are some DVC member events, including a Monday member event, and some other paid experiences. You can check out the daily schedule on the app and see what’s available. I’d like to tour the grand villa while we’re there and that happens regularly on the schedule.

I hope this helps! As an Aulani newbie there’s so much information and a lot to learn, but we’re so excited for our first stay there. Hope you have a great trip!

Thanks!! This was really helpful! Hope you have a great time.

I can’t comment on the kids club, but I booked the luau, dining, and spa through the Aulani web site (some are links that bring you to an external web site, like the Luau).

I went during a less busy time (early December), so I was able to book the luau about a month out (but even then I think I was just lucky one of our nights was available). I ended up cancelling it anyway because we’d been to a luau at the Polynesian Cultural Center a few years ago and we were hoping for an Island Garden view room that overlooks the luau (which we did get!). I’m sure you can keep checking for cancellations. There are also others within walking distance of Aulani.

AMA AMA was the only table service meal we did that required a reservation and we booked a time around sunset right at 30 days. Sunset was amazing and we loved the meal. We also really liked the ‘Olelo Room for dinner, which is walk up only and has live music at night (it’s not on the water though).

The spa has a decent amount of availability leading up to my trip because I changed my time the week before. The spa is amazing and is so much better than the ones at Disney World. Definitely plan to spend at least an hour enjoying the outdoor garden/hot tub area before or after your treatment. I read they were limiting the amount of time people spent there post-pandemic, but in December it seemed like I could stay there all day. It’s a really relaxing area, especially in contrast to the pool!

There are a lot of free activities that you can only sign up for in-person on the day, like ukelele lessons and culture tours. Definitely line up 30-45 minutes before the community hall opens because many of the popular activities book up really fast.

The app has the activity schedule for each day and the character times are added in the morning (I think they showed up between 8am-9am).

There are also Aulani tips and trip planning Facebook groups that I found helpful leading up to my trip.

Have an amazing time!! I love Aulani so much, and now see why people say it’s their favorite DVC resort.

Hanauma Bay does require reservations (or else showing up very early to be on standby) unless you book through a tour, not sure how that all works now as tours are newly now being allowed back. But the reservations only open up 2 days before, at 7AM Hawaii time, and it is very much a fast fingers situation. Hanauma is also closed on Mon/Tues.

This thread is very informative. Thank you,

Does anyone happen to have a list of when reservations for the popular activities/dining open? i.e. how many days out do you need to be ready to book?

At WDW everything opens (well, most things anyway) at 60 days, but it seems that everything is different and random at Aulani.

Thanks again.
