Scary Weekend at the Fort

Wow.

One really has to toe the party line or get severely reprimanded on this board. I've been a member of the DIS since the inception (and before, if we're being accurate), and have over 3000 posts. Am I to be accused of being a troll, too, as others who don't agree with the majority here are accused?

I'm sorry, but this little board doesn't make up the majority of guests at the Fort.

I disagree that I should "stay elsewhere" if I am uncomfortable with the "decorations" at my neighbor's campsite. Regardless that the Fort isn't hard-core camping where there's nothing but nature around (including a lack of hookups and bathrooms), we stay at the Fort because of the beautiful natural surroundings, among other things. We *don't* stay there because our fellow campers don't understand boundaries within whimsical decor.

I'll continue to camp there, including during the over-the-top decorating periods. I'm sorry, but I disagree that the over-the-top decorators somehow "deserve" the Fort more than I do. I also disagree that tackiness somehow embodies the spirit of Disney and "fun" and "love of family."

As another poster said, I believe this is exactly why HOA's must exist. One person's flamingo is another person's tacky yard art.

I am amazed that the average poster on this board seems to believe that they embody the average camper at the Fort. Just do the math. The number of frequent posters here is hardly equal to the average numbers of visitors to the Fort. And as the number of posters here is extremely likely to be a participant in the trailer decorating crowd, it's not surprising that any dissenters are quickly given the "intimidate and kick 'em in the butt" treatment. We may post again in the future, we may not. But please don't deceive yourselves into believing we don't exist or that your opinions are more valid than ours.

Nobody said or implied that, we said you were in the minority. If we don't fall in line with the majority of the campers at the Fort, then why do the majority of the campers there decorate?

If you want rustic and quiet you don't go to the Fort. You can't claim to be surprised at the decorations or the crowds. And you have no say in what the other campers put up for decorations. Otherwise, you are putting your own opinions as the rule of the day. I believe you said that other people would be wrong for doing that.

Don't even start with HOA's. We are in one, and I am on the current Board. Their only real purpose is to feed the egos of the snooty. With luck we will put an end to the lawsuits and leins so favored by past boards and get back to enjoying our neighbors and neighborhood.

The majority of campers there *don't* decorate. I don't consider a mickey head lamp or a pumpkin blowup in this statement. I'm talking about the "cover your entire freaking campsite in crap" decorators, of which there are a relative few. *Those* are the ones we're talking about on this thread. The moderate decorators aren't the ones in question.

Then maybe you should go and kvetch to corporate because they ENCOURAGE this sort of thing. Hint: They have a contest on who can decorate the tackiest (IYO) each year. They give out prizes!

People's opinions similar to yours are the very reason I hunted long and wide for a house WITHOUT AN HOA! I see what my parents deal with and I want no part of it. I have lived in my house for 10+ years in peace and harmony, annoying my French-Canadian neighbor.

I disagree with you that the majority of people don't decorate. IF they are staying for any length of time, they decorate. It is encouraged and welcomed. (maybe not by you and your majority, but by Disney)

Dvcajun-------You are my hero! Very well put! Thank you!

I've been hard up for heros in the past, but...

So I understand that only those decorations you approve of are acceptable? Anything else seems to be "freakin." You accused us of discounting any opinions that don't agree with ours, then you describe any campers that don't decorate the way you do as "freaking." Thank you for clarifying for all of us freaks. We've been enlightened.

Kungaloosh:

1/4 cup Capt Morgan's Spiced Rum
1/4 cup Blackberry Brandy
1/4 cup orange juice
1/4 cup Strawberry Daiquiri mix

Blend with enough ice to make slushy.

I always somehow thought you & I were similar. After all, how many of us love the Boardwalk AND hairless cats?! But we aren't alike if you believe that some of us over-the-top decorators believe we 'deserve' the Fort more. I don't feel this way at all. I deserve nothing more than the average person. I decorate as I wish because I like to & I can & I have received compliments on my site.

as for:
One person's flamingo is another person's tacky yard art.
The more flamingos the merrier!!

I don't think that's what he's saying. He's not talking about the type of decorations, but the sheer volume.

It's common sense, folks. Put one fancy centerpiece on your dining table, and your table looks elegant. Put 50 centerpieces on your dining table and it's a cluttered mess.

This is reasonable:

This is over-the-top and an eyesore:

It's just like anything else -- give some people some latitude and they just go overboard with it.

So I guess if I don't like it too bad people who decorate are going to do it for self aggrandizement. Seems to be a lot of "who cares what my neighbor may feel or think" or that it may damper their vacation because the view from their campsite is of "my decorations". This is why I live in a community with a HOA so I don't have to live looking at what people try and justify for their own personal reasons as "not and eyesore".

To: MandMluvmmanddvc there is an awful lot of I I I I . Clearly it is what "I" want to do. Just becasuse you can do it doesn't mean you should.

I bought a tacky flamingo with mickey ears at the trading post in September. Disney sold it to me, so I guess they approve.

the only examples given of 'overdecorating' seem to be of the same two campsites, so let's get over this & say that one or two may have given a little 'extra' effort, but the remaining sites obviously haven't offended anyone. why argue over a couple who aren't even on the disboards?

Just becasuse you can do it doesn't mean you should.

And of course you and Epcot are the true arbiters of what shouldn't be done. Why is your definition of unreasonable the one that is correct by default? Why is our preference not the one that is correct? Typical HOA mentality.

I don't think a couple of decorations is a problem. 1,000 flamingos covering a campsite is.

I love those flamingos!!! I wanted to buy one when I was down at Disney this summer, but they were all out of them. :(

It's a problem for you, that doesn't make it a problem for anyone else. Again, why do you assume that your definition is the one that rules?

well, duh, even I would agree with that!

Oh, and as the owner/operator of a professional wedding & event planning and decorating company, I agree in the 'less is more' philosophy for most events. But as I said before, with the exception of one or two sites, nobody IMHO went too far overboard.

THANK YOU ALL FOR KILLING my pics thread it was put up because people wanted to see Halloween at the Fort. Disney is the HOA and they welcome it. Disney plans paid hayrides to show off these sites. So if you don’t like it change the board of the HOA.

I think you should follow this with 1,000 Flamingo pics Todd. OK beer, it's now back on topic.
