I can't believe what my mom just told me on the phone! She said a few days ago, there was a knock at the door. She usually lets my dad answer the door but he was watching a football game and had the TV up loud and didn't seem to hear the knock. She usually looks out the kitchen window but, for some reason, she didn't look this time. Their front door has shaded glass panes on it. She could see the outline of a large man standing way back from the door so she decided to open it.

The man said hello and asked her how she was. My mom thought he was probably selling something because he had one of those shopping baskets that you pull and it was full of books or papers. The guy continued to say that his company was closed that day but he decided to work because he's ambitious and wants to get ahead in life, etc. My mom thought he was just making small talk before trying to sell her something.

Then, suddenly, the guy came running at full-speed with his arm outstreched in front of him, making a fist. Luckily, my mom had fast enough reflexes to slam the door before he reached it and it locked automatically. She heard the guy mumble something and then she looked out the kitchen window as he walked away.

She quickly went to tell my dad what had happened and I'm a little surprised at his reaction. He's a retired police officer but my mom said he just blew it off as the guy being drunk or crazy (I'll have to have a talk with my dad about that!). I asked my mom if she immediately called 911 and she said no. I said, "Mom, some guy tried to get into your house while aiming his fist at you! You should have called the police so they could come and look for him before he really does get into someone's house!" She said she was shaken up by it. I gave her a good lecture after that. She said she always checks out the window before opening the door but, for some reason, she didn't do it this time. She said maybe it was because it was broad daylight or because my dad was home. I think she was shaken up enough to be more careful next time.

The guy is lucky he didn't get inside! My dad still keeps a little, loaded souvenier from his days as a cop (if you know what I mean)!

Jeez I got nervous just reading that! What a creep! Mom should have called the police. I hope he didn't go all kookoo on one of the neighbors.

WOW!! Thank God:littleangel: she and you dad were not hurt:goodvibes. I don't know about the West Coast but here on the East almost everyday in the news is another home invation or personal robbery:sad2:. Scary Stuff:scared1:. This poor economey is making people do desperate things:eek:. Just goes to show, day or night you always have to be on your toes.

I hope your mom decides to call the police so warnings can go out. One of her neighbors might not be as quick to shut the door.

Yes, let the police know.

Maybe your mom could install a screen door, that way if she opens the other door, there is still a barriar inbetween her and the person on the other side.
Scary!

That IS scary!

I had a situation a couple of weeks ago. Someone quietly knocked on my front door. My dog went up to the door and started growling (she usually is quite the barker). It was early morning (i was alone and in pjs), so I ran to grab my robe.

I heard knocking on the front door again and opened it. No one was on the porch, I even stood there saying hello.

I came back in and went to the kitchen to grab my coffee mug. As I entered the kitchen I heard someone trying to open our back patio door!

I grabbed the phone and headed to the window for a peek. My dog started to bark loudly at the patio door. By the time I got the courage to pull the drape the person was gone.

My husband was mad that I didn't call police. Ever since I've been obsessed with checking doors and windows.

that is a scary situation!! that is kind of odd how your father acted. even if he WERE drunk/crazy he could have still caused harm.

i had a similar experience over the summer. during the day i never lock the doors to the house, i know i know......stupid idea! so DH was at his parents house and i had taken a shower and then i got out and went into the computer room to check my email really quick. i had left the bathroom window open to get some air in there after my shower.

after a few minutes on the computer i began to hear someone speaking loudly but i dismissed it thinking that it was just someone out front and the noise just traveled because i had the window open in the bathroom, which is right next to the computer room(even tho the door was closed).

then i heard someone knocking on the door and i wasn't expecting anyone. i went over to the kitchen to look out the side window and there was a red van parked in the driveway and as i was looking, they started POUNDING on my door and yelling loudly(i couldn't make out what they were saying tho).

of course at that moment i thought "crap.....i forgot to lock the door!" but after a minute or two they finally left and i couldn't even get a good look at the van.

i called my DH and asked him if maybe he knew if someone was coming over, maybe his family and he said even if it was someone from his family they'd never pound on the door like that.

to this day idk who it was or what they wanted and it hasn't happened again, but you better believe i keep my doors locked at all times, now!

OMG, that would be scary!

Here's my scary story: about 4 years ago I got Zaxby's to go and was eating it on the couch with the little tv trays with dh about midday. We usually kept the front door open to let light in. A younger bigger built guy, maybe 20 starts banging on the door. His shirt is almost ripped off of him and he is carrying a big stick. I go to the door to see what is going on without opening the glass screen door. He says he needs to come in an use the phone and I told him there is a pay phone across the street and to please leave. Well, he tries to open the door and I'm pulling on my side of the handle yelling at dh to hand me the phone. About this time, a VERY large woman comes out of nowhere up on my porch and starts pushing the heck out of this guy where I can see the wrought iron on my porch bowing and SLAMMED him into my glass door. By now dh is standing behind the wood door (so he can slam it if needed) and I'm holding the screen door tight giving the 911 operator a play by play of the fight. My kids are now crying and don't know what's wrong, I'm screaming "You're trespassing, leave this property, I'm on the phone with 911!" When I was told a police car coming down the road I yelled "I'm having you arrested for trespassing, get off my porch!" They finally took off across the road and made it to the parking lot across the street, so when the cop pulled up I pointed to them and had given the 911 operator a full description of both. The cop got both of them in the car and drove off. They didn't come back later to talk to me, but I believe both of those people were going to rob us with 2 small kids in the house and there fight was an act to get the guy inside. Still freaks me out to this day.

How scary!!!! Thank goodness your mom was quick enough to get the door closed!! Poor woman!
