Hi All!! We leave in less than three weeks for our fun week at DW!! and we are so pumped!!! :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

My question is what rides did you or your kids think were scary? My DS's are 8 & 9 but not real fond of dark places, particularily if there are things jumping out at them! pirate: They do not have a lot of experience with roller coasters either so I'm not sure if they are going to handle really fast or loopy ones well. I know....over concerned mom!! :lovestruc However, I will pay the price if they get the you know what scared out of them early on in the week!!!!

So, what has been your experience with this? Any rides that terrified you that maybe a newbie should stay away from?

Thanks in advance for your advice!! :teeth:

Of course every kid is different, but from what you said...

At the Magic Kingdom: Pirates has a little darkness in the begining, but after that it's all good. Haunted Mansion & Snow White have momnets of darkness and creepiness. Space Mt. is dark and a roller coaster!! So you might want to save that for later in the trip. Big Thunder is pretty mild for a roller coaster, but if they've never done any coasters before, you might want to start them on Goofy's Barnstormers in Mickey's Toontown Fair. That's a kiddie coaster.
Stitch is all about darkness, and can be scary for those easily scared.

Epcot: Mission Space is pretty wild....I can't imagine anyone having a problem with Soarin', Test Track is fast but not like a roller coaster. It's a ton of fun.

Studios: Obviously Rock n' Roller Coaster and Tower of Terror use speed and darkness! RnR Coaster is VERY intense!!! Great Movie ride has one part that could freak out kids easily scared.

Animal Kingdom: Dinosaur is very intense. It involves the dark and things popping out at ya. Same with Tough to be a Bug, although not as intense!

To get your kids comfortable with rides I would suggest starting out with Fantasyland in MK, that's what we've done with our kids first trips!

I always take a little flashlight with me on those dark rides. Then if all the lights go out, I can turn on the light (heading towards the floor of course) for my granddaughter who doesn't like the dark. I think she just likes the idea of having the light available! It's also a comfort in case one of the rides stops mid-way (happened once at the Haunted Mansion).

My 9 year old gets scared on the Dinosaur ride in Ak. He has been on it 3 times and wants to do ride, but towards the end he is screaming and crying. We are going back again in August and I know he'll want to ride. Kids, who can figure them out!

i bought my dd 9 those glow necklaces from the dollar store.... but she was still not to fond of the dark rides...... i cant figure it out.... she rides all the rollercoasters and geauga lake and cedar point but would only go on half of the rides at wdw...... she rode dinosaur and didnt like it at all..... vicki

The only ride my DD(6) and DS(8) were very scared on in all of the parks was Dinosaur in Animal Kingdom . They both agreed it was terrifying. They thought Space mountain and Expedition Everest were great.
It just seemed to be the idea of being attacked by Dinosaurs that freaked them both out. :scared1: I was surprised by their reaction because the ride is a bit bumpy and loud but it is pretty tame otherwise.

Did someone mention one of THE scariest attractions for kids at DAK...
"Its Tough to Be a Bug"?

It has:
Insect "stingers" that poke you
"Bug Spray" FOG that instantly fills the theater
Giant SPIDERS that drop down from the ceiling to within "arm's length"
"Acid" (water) that gets sprayed in your face
A HUGE threatening animatronic VILLAIN (Hopper" the Grasshopper)
and all accompanied by LOUD noises and
the audience SHRIEKING with each assault.
:scared1:

BTW, I LOVE this attraction, no joke!
But it is one of the most traumatic for even grade-school-age kids.
Maybe its because most folks think is only going to be a "cute 3D movie" and ignore the multiple WARNINGS given before the show.

When in doubt, send an adult in to see any ride FIRST to make a "pre-assessment" for the rest of the family.

Well, I guess there's always a spot to view "Cinderellabration".

The only thing scary about THAT is that Disney actually PROMOTED it as a "SHOW".

The only ride I have ever found scary because of dark things popping out is Dinosaur. Since my DH doesn't do rides that jolt you around due to medical problems and we have no kids I only go on this ride if I am with someone else who wants to go and even then I shut my eyes through parts of it.

The scariest rides for me are Dinosaur (but I hate dinos, but it is a very dark ride with hidden dinos that pop out), Tower of Terror (one of my fav rides, but it still scares me to death!), and It's A Small World (just kidding!!)

Hey, tell me....the Tower of Terror....does that just go up high and than plummet to the ground, making it feel it is going to crash or is there more to it than that? :confused3

The Haunted Mansion is not that scary once you are in but the hall that you walk into before you get on the ride itself is very dark, my ds9 was alittle scared and he really isn't afraid of dark places.

Not even HALF of it.
There is a great "set-up" and wonderful queue themeing.

And the climax (when you finally get there) is not just ONE DROP, it can be 3, 4 or 5... with variations of "other happenings" in the drop shaft... because EACH TIME you ride, it can be completely, randomly DIFFERENT.

IMHO, ToT is one of the BEST Disney attractions of all time!

As someone who is terrified of dinorsaurs, I would say Dinosaur is the scariest lol. I went on it while it was called "Countdown to Extinction" (so it was fairly new) but anyway... I have been on it about four times. I hear it is good! I will have to see it sometime! :rotfl2:

My first time on the attraction I had my eyes closed. I asked my sister to tell me when the scary parts were over (as she had already been on it and I am the world's biggest scardy cat lol). She told me it was safe to open my eyes and just as I did so, I saw this enormous head of a terrifing dino starring right at me! I could have died! rofl! :rotfl2: (I suppose that is where they take your picture) lol.

I don't remember what rides scared me when I was very young. I think I was hesitant to go on The Tower of Terror, but I went on. (it involved me screaming silently the entire time and then coming out bawling my eyes out but all is good LOL.)

Now, Dinosaur is the only thing that scares me, as I got older, things obviously got less terrifing and I am sure your kids will be the same way. As for now, I suppose it really just depends on what things can be considering "scary" when it comes to things that jump out at you. For me, "It's Tough To Be A Bug" was never scary. I always found it to be cute. Heh, I am not much help am I? . I guess my biggest regret from when I was little was avoiding the rides that appeared to be frightening. One example comes to mind. I never rode Alien Encounter and now it is gone. I still wish I could have experienced it. :sad2:

There is a fantastic story to the ride itself. You are in your own Twilight Zone episode. The cast members who work on this ride are great and really play along with the story.
My father and I were walking past a CM at the ride entrance after we'd rode the ride. My father stopped and said to the CM; "Hey, I think your elevator is broken!" The CM pretended to look all confused and said very seriously; "No.. I don't think so Sir!" :teeth:

It's like you enter a real hotel, which has not been touched since several people "disappeared" on an elevator one night. (The theming is fantastic inside, it's all so real...)
You decide to ride this elevator, which is obviously a bad idea. ;)

Before the ride itself, you are taken into the hotel library. You are shown a short clip of a Twilight Zone episode made especially for the Tower of Terror. It shows what happened to those people many years ago on the elevator, and what is about to happen to you. On this weeks episode, "You are the star."

The ride itself isn't just up and down, up and down. You see ghosts of the people who "disappeared", you travel down hallways of the hotel, you see images from the Twilight Zone (the window smashes right in front of you), you hear the amazing Twilight Zone theme, it goes pitch black at one point, and you also hear Rod Serling's voice before you drop and after you drop.

I cannot express enough how fantastic this ride is! It is so much more than just a ride that drops!

Dinosaur at AK--very dark and very scary. Also the Tower of Terror at MGM--that gets very dark--the lights go out and then it drops. The only light is when the doors open to the outside and you can see the park when it drops. My DD (5) liked Dinosaur but not TOT. She likes all the rides at MK--nothing overly scary there. The Haunted Mansion is dark but not spooky, scary--fun, scary. Last year when we went, we were in line at the Haunted Mansion and some kid came screaming out of entrance and he was screaming like an axe murderer was after him. LOL! Too bad he was so scared, it's not worth upseting your kids if they really don't want to go on a ride.

This, friends, is a post we like to call a "SPOILER". :rotfl:

Kids are sooo different.

DS10-(nine at the time )was scared of nothing. He has always been a thrill rider,
DS8(seven at the time)was scared of everything until he tried it.At the end he was scared ot TOT,Dinosaur, and Splash Mtn.But he loved Mission Space and RocknRoller coaster.
DD7(six at time) was scared of Its Tough To Be A Bug,Dinosaur, and TOT.

Myy DD7 has a friend that went over President week. Her mother said she knew she was in trouble when her DD7 was scared of the monorail.I never would have thought this child would be scared of anything. She was scared of EVERYTHING.
