Scary fish @ Castaway Cay- Do you know what it is?

Barracuda attacks are rare. They will attack shiny objects in cloudy water. They are curious and will follow you, which can get spooky if they're large.

I used to snorkel every weekend in the Keys and saw barracuda whenever I was in the water. Either a school of smaller ones (1-2 feet) or large loners (3-5 feet). Never had a problem but never wore anything shiny and would NEVER consider skinny dipping in the ocean. YOWZA!

Dh has now got out of bed and whilst that fish was scary he says this is the photo he meant !!!

It is blurred because he said he was swimming away at the time :rotfl2:

I'm 99.9% sure the fish in this picture is NOT a shark because of the shape of the tail. Check out this link for an example:

barracude in particular like shiny things. While snorkeling on RCCL's private island I came alongside another swimmer who brought a can of cheese wiz. The bottom of the can was very shiny. Soon we had a dozen or so baracudas right around us. Some swam up from behind me. A less than fun feeling to see those things appear.

I dont know that the cheese wiz is the best thing for the fish to be eating but they sure did love it.

Note to self: Remember the sign posted at the zoo, i.e. "Please do not feed the animals" and leave the shiny can of cheese wiz on the ship. :rotfl2:

Yes, That is Barry, I have swam with him before. I think we are more harmful to him than he is to us. He just likes to hang out in the snorkle area. No harm.

My family cruised Halloween 2006 and when DH and I were snorkeling we took a picture of a fish that apparently is a resident underneath the lifeguard stand as you enter the snorkeling course area.

It certainly did not look like Barry. More round and I would say a grouper perhaps. DH remembers the lifeguard telling him the fish is a freind, but now that I am scrapping the pages, he cannot remember the fish's name.

Anyone know this fish? I can try to post a picture if it would help.

OK, dh just said the tail fin looks freaky but he doesn't think it's a shark. What looks like it could be a dorsal fin seems too far back and it looks like it's got a small side fin so I'm really not sure.
The first is a barracuda and the second is definitely some species of shark..... you can tell by the tail.

One thing to remember when swimming if barracudas are around.......remove anything shiny that you happen to be wearing, as in necklaces, rings, etc. They love going after shiny things. Personally I'd rather swim with sharks in the area than barracudas. I just don't trust them and I don't know why.

Does the following picture look familiar? It's a nurse shark.

I'm hoping that the scene from "Finding Nemo" is based on fact... That in Disney's "world" aka Castaway Cay... the sharks are on a 12 step plan and I'll hear the "Fish are friends, not food" chant.... :lmao:

Ok friends, I am not a fan of swimming in the ocean beyond my knees as it is, made friends with some fishies biting my butt when I was little in galveston, lets just say, I am not so sure I will be doing more than dunking my feet in the gorgeous cc waters LOL :rotfl2:

I remember seeing a post about a year ago. Someone had taken at picture of a shark at serenity. Since i saw the picture, I refuse to swim over there :sad2:

I think that one is Trigger Fish.
OMG You caught Dory!!!!!! :rotfl2:

We saw barracuda when we were at Serenity Bay on Castaway Cay. We were told that barracuda don't attack unless they are provoked. "HELLO" It's not like they are going to warn me before chewing of my arm. :rotfl2:
I still swim and snorkeln but get nervous when I see barracuda or big fish.

I HOPE I see a 'cuda!!! How exciting... I can't wait for my first cruise!

I would share our picture, but it is somewhere in the water at CC. DH had a re-usable underwater camera. He went under the water to take the picture, realized the case wasn't completely shut. When he stood up, the water AND all the "color" poured out of the camera.

:lmao: It still make me laugh!!

LOL! That is exactly how I was in Cancun in 1995... they said they never saw anyone climb up on the "fake" island as fast as I did. (the kind that is deep water and you have to climb up on it- sorta like a raft? I dunno what you call that place) All it took was someone saying they saw a barracuda- I was outta there. LOL To be fair it was my first time snorkeling and I was already kinda freaked that all the purty little fish kept coming straight for my face in schools of fish.. not one or two- many coming at me over and over. LOL Oh and I'm deathly afraid of sharks and other large fish. LOL

I thought the first picture was a barricuda, but didn't want to guess wrong. I thought it was just my paranoia about fish talking (ie: all are big scary with big teeth LOL). I guess I don't have enough faith in my animal planet/discovery channel watching. I would have been right- it is a barricuda. Glad to know what to avoid now. Where's a scared shivvering emoticon when you need it? LOL

Sharks!!!!!! One of our fellow disers that sailed with us on the 05 Thanksgiving Western was fishing at CC and pulled in a shark not far from where the parasailers were landing......

both times we were on CC, there was a sign at serenity bay (the adult beach) that entering the water is at your own risk and that there are potentially dangerous fish in the water (such as barracudas, etc.)

Hi all,

Thanks for all the comments. :thumbsup2

I would just like to say that I love Castaway Cay especially serenity Bay and spotting those tiddlers :rolleyes1 that last time we were there has not put us off! In August you will see both myself and DH -( Minus any sparkly jewellry just in case  ) happily snorkelling away.

Nevertheless I wonder why disney only have shark nets on the family side and not the adults :rolleyes1 Perhaps its because children taste better? :lmao:
