Scary fish @ Castaway Cay- Do you know what it is?

Hi,

I hope this works - Ive never managed to post a pic before.

Last August DH was snorkelling @ serenity bay and took this photo. He said the fish looked very scary ( hehe) and that it was very big. He now thinks he has had an encounter with a shark

Does anyone know what it is?

Okay I have no idea- but was this really necessary? Gee thanks a lot- now my husband REALLY won't be able to get me to go snorkeling there. LOL

Dh has now got out of bed and whilst that fish was scary he says this is the photo he meant !!!

I'm no expert but the first one looks like a barracuda and the second looks like a milk shark. While I would swim AWAY from anything larger than my goldfish I would have been much more nervous about the very dangerous barracuda than the harmless milk shark. Barracudas have extremely sharp teeth and have been known to attack humans if provoked so don't get too close. The like to circle and check out divers. All those discovery channel shows are a great way to learn about ocean creatures.

I'm pretty sure the first one is a barracuda. We saw one in the snorkeling lagoon back '03. You see a lot more variety over at serenity bay because they don't have the nets over there. We've seen stingrays, live conch's, starfish, and more.

I also believe the first to be a baracuda and the second some kinda shark!

Here is a pic of the 30 lb. barracuda my son caught on the Castaway Cay fishing excursion......but it was very far off the island.....

Here is a pic of another fish caught on the trip....this one is pretty!!!

I think that one is Trigger Fish.

Baracuda are freaky and I did not like snorkeling with them in the Bahamas but they're supposedly harmless. That other picture is shadowy but from the tail and nose I do think it's some kind of shark. Unless someone was bleeding in the water or went after it, I don't think it would be dangerous but I'd have gotten back in the boat if I saw that! Do those things travel alone? I don't know.

OK, dh just said the tail fin looks freaky but he doesn't think it's a shark. What looks like it could be a dorsal fin seems too far back and it looks like it's got a small side fin so I'm really not sure.

I don't think they worry about keeping baracuda out of the nets, they wont bite. But you mean at the beach, right? If this was out snorkeling they were probably way past any nets. They don't net-off areas for snorkeling do they? I guess he might've been snorkeling from the beach. I don't know.

Yes it is a barracuda... my ex husband had a HUGE one mounted on our wall he caught in Florida...but I have heard of them biting. I take my jewelry off to swim because the shiny/flashy reflection is what they're attracted to. guess that is why fishing baits have the shiny spoon looking things on them? I wouldn't be afraid of them, but I dont wear my jewelry either just for precaution

I have heard of barracuda attacking humans. It is rare, but it does happen. I got the heck away from one when snorkeling in Cozumel. I wouldn't hang around one, just in case.

That does look like a shark. Check out the nose. Very sharky.

I came across a barracuda at the family snorkle and it was freaky. It was the only fish around and would NOT go away!! Made me go back to the beach and I didn't go snorkling this last trip!

The snorkling area off the family beach is within the nets. Serenity Bay has no nets, however. I imagine that the smaller baracudas get thru the nets pretty easily. They should keep that 30 lb one out though!
