Scary Day...Not Sure What is Wrong...

Was lurking on this thread. How was it? I've gotten a couple Optical Migraines in the past and that's what it sounds like. And anxiety for the rest. You're freaking yourself out.

So indulge us... what'd he say?

Well, I am back all. I was there for close to an hour and a half. After a huge check up (I felt like I was the car at a car wash and got "the works"), the doc has narrowed it down to my being hypoglycemic (low sugar type) or having ocular migraines. He strongly feels that it is hypoglycemia and I am having hypoglycemic responses just before I eat lunch everyday because my sugar is so low. The visual disturbance could have been on a day when it was extremely low. He wants me to have mandatory bloodwork and wanted to do it tonight, but it was too late in the day. I told him my last writing club (I'm the advisor) session is tomorrow and I didn't want to cancel it because I'm throwing them a little party. He said that I'll have to take off on Friday and do it first thing in the morning then so he scheduled that. He is going to be there and put me on oxygen, if need be, so I don't pass out from the anxiety. Ugh. This is going to be a rough few days.

Nikki-

I am HORRIBLE at givign blood and in the past have fainted everytime. When I was pregnant with both kids, it was such a trial everytime until we discovered something....

The main problem ahppened when they would stick me and miss so we switched to getting it out of my hand with a butterfly needle. It hurts a little more but they get it everytime and it is MUCH quicker.

I HIGHLY suggest it!

I wish you well!

Kristin

Not that I expect it will be of much help, but don't sweat the bloodwork. It will be over before you know it. I have it done every three months. Make sure you're well hydrated as it makes it easier to get the little vial started. I also find it's good to talk to someone while it's happening, then your mind is elsewhere. Sounds like your doc ruled out most of the really serious bad stuff already. JUst try to think of the bloodwork as a quick little one or two minute test, and then it's over. Then they'll have what they need to get you diagnosed and on your way to feeling better. I'll be thinking bout ya, and I know you'll come through it with no probs.

:goodvibes So he ruled out any ugly stuff - great! I'm sorry you're so stressed about the bloodwork! Remember that it'll be good to have an answer (much better than sitting at home imagining all kinds of things, which is exactly what I would do). I'm glad that the two possibilities right now are very managable. Good luck on Friday - we'll be thinking of you!

Glad to hear you are getting some answers.
About the bloodwork- My kids and I faint too! Back when I was in my 20's I finally learned to LIE DOWN during the blood test. Just let them know, and they will bring you to an area where you can lie down with your feet UP while they do the tests. At least if you do faint- you aren't going anywhere! ;)
You can get up when you are ready. They are always so nice about it too! My sons (now 22 & 19) make the same request and it's an enormous help.
Also, bring a small bottle of water or OJ with you in your purse and you can drink it once they are done- that helps too.

Good luck and let us know how it all turns out. :flower3:

Mine are never accompanied by an actual migraine ( I don't get migraines) and I had my first one in my mid 30's. I get them about 1x a year, no associative symptoms (Ie pms, etc). Just find a place to sit down, take some deep calming breaths, and know that it will pass in 10-15 minutes.

I get them about once a year as well and just had one the other day. They are annoying- especially when you need to be reading something or driving. It's good to know others experience something similar.

Glad you are getting some answers. Good luck with the blood work and let us know. I'm sure the doctor lectured you already, but eat a morning snack so your sugar won't bottom out. Take care! :goodvibes

Nicole, I know posted in in chat last night about having a blood test on Friday and being nervous about it. As someone who has a major fear of all things related needles, here is how I handle it:

-Drink lots of fluid 24 hrs before
-Tell the technician of your fear/nervousness
-Ask to lie down when they draw
-Ask them to use the smallest needle possible. They use a child/butterfly needle on me.
-If the first technician cannot find a vein or misses DEMAND another technician. I refuse to be a human pincushion.
-Don't look. I take my glasses off. Put the iPod/iPhone on if it helps.
-Breath
-Try not to get yourself worked up over this. Yea, I know easier said then done. The more tense you are, the tougher it is going to be for then to find a vein.

Will be sending happy wishes, prayers, and all the good vibes I can manage. You prolly won't know anything when it's done, but let us all know it's done none the less.

Sending pixie dust that having the bloodwork done is a piece of cake for you. I hope they get this figured out for you soon!!!

Thinking of you and hoping all goes well!
