Scared of the Poly

a couple weeks ago - didn't stay in concierge so I can't speak to that. But I can say it was the most magical, wonderful stay. Mousekeeping did an excellent job, the grounds are beautiful, CMs are fantastic. Not one negative comment will you hear from me. Long live the Poly!

We stayed in Rarotonga last Dec, just BEFORE it was renovated, and thoroughly enjoyed it! It certainly wasn't "musty"!

The lobby and grounds of the Polynesian have luxuriant tropical vegetation, which is part of what I love about the resort. The odors from these plants (which are usually barely noticeable) are for most guests a welcome part of the tropical setting. But for some people they are apparently a nuisance, and sometimes described as musty or moldy.

Wow! There sure have been a lot of these threads lately . . . we had no regrets after our stay there two years ago and I am sure we will have none when we return in August. Remember, it is the same resort you were thrilled to book six months ago. We were originally booked at the YC for our trip. When I showed our DD (who was 4 on our last trip) pictures of stormalong bay and the YC she said, "Mom, I thought we were going to Disney World." I explained we were staying at a different hotel and she told me, " . . . but Mom . . . Disney World is in Hawaii!!!!!!!" Back to the Poly we go --- grinning the whole way!!

I couldnt be more excited!! I eat up every post that starts with Poly, (or has Poly in it!) My DD also picked Poly from the pictures (thanks Tikiman!) so she tells everyone we're going to stay in Hawaii!!

I'll probably forget where I posted the questions I have... maybe there is a better thread...

Do any of you wear Hawaiin style shirts?

Did anyone have problems with the a/c?

Thanking everyone who takes the time to share thier experiences!!

Eeyore, there were LOTS of tropical clothes around the Poly, not only on CM's but on guests! I saw lots of ladies in tropical sundresses and many men in Hawaaian shirts. My Dad wore his personal fave, a bright red Hawaaian-Mickey shirt we bought him last year. You will not be out of place in fun, bright clothes.

We had two adjoining rooms. Mom's room clearly wasn't as cold as ours. We called maintenance and they were at the door within 5 minutes. The nice gentleman fiddled with the A/C unit and within a few minutes the room was freezing. Again, Raratonga had just been re-opened so we anticipated few problems.

We were thrilled with the location. We had a ground floor room with a beautiful view toward the quiet pool. We were steps away from the lobby (and drink refills) and the Volcano pool. The kids loved it. We felt in the middle of everything, yet also peaceful. We had breakfast every morning at Kona Cafe (reasonable) then would tour the property or swim in the afternoon. It was extremely hot when we were there, close to 100 degrees. This actually worked out well as we did nothing but relax, right on grounds. It was truly wonderful. The property is beautiful in the morning and evening. I got lots of great pics. Make time to stroll to the Grand Floridian on the path along the beach. We did this and it was just lovely.

We had a magical stay and feel that the location, grounds and amenities of the Poly make it "practically perfect in every way." Have fun!

No offense to the Tiki gods but in my humble opinion this is a cave. We requested garden view not to be in the middle of the garden (or have the garden on our porch) (a garden view) would presume to have a view!!! When you look to the end of the room it should have a view, not a 5 foot towering plant that blocks the view of everything, as this one does. I would suspect that there were only a few rooms like this and not all would be the same. But this one was. As far as the Musty smell
”musty smell has only been reported in a handful of lower level rooms in Tahiti”
So there is a problem of musty smelling rooms it is being reported by numerous guests, Also please look at the dirt circle around the cieling fan. In the dictionary (Websters) a cave or cavern: is to be enclosed in. Please take a look at the picture. It is an enclosed room. Now with all of that said we still had an excellent experience at the Poly it is a wonderful resort and we will go back but not to room 1002 of the Tahiti building. This was only posted on the boards as help for those non plant lovers or those who do not wish to sleep with a large "possibly" carnivorous plant hanging or snooping at their only outside view of a beautiful resort!:D
I stand by what I said in my previous post. I thought these boards were to help folks and all I was doing was to inform of what we ran into. All in all it was a fabulous trip and we will go again and stay at the poly (not the room with the PLANT though it scared me, I think it was eyeing my smaller child) at any rate It was all good and I was just trying to help others who were not lucky enough to be in Hawaii concierge lagoon view (away from those vicious plants). Pixie dust and Mouse Magic to all from one Poly lover to another and I would not be scared of staying at the Poly Just keep up with small children around the plants at room 1002 Tahiti Building!

Maybe it is just me...but the rooms look beautiful. Of course I do not need to look at the pictures since I have stayed 3 times before. All three times garden view...2 or the 3 first floor. Yes the plants were right up at the window...it was just beautiful. I did not stay in Tahiti.....no musty smell....again just seeing those pictures of the supposed cave makes me all happy......I will be there soon!!!

I guess we all see it so different. . . lovmy2girls you had the perfect room for us---a private garden patio. We like to sit out and have a drink, read, and chat after the kids turn in and that looks to be an ideal spot. Our patio was anything but private at GVC in addition to the foot traffic, the ducks and their droppings we ran into a lovely child staying in another room who liked our patio better than his. This time we requested and are hoping for a balcony room--hopefully a little of the privacy your room had and maybe even a great "garden view"!!

kc&dmom, exactly, I am so glad to see someone with a better perception of things. It is all a matter of personal likes and dislikes.

Garden view in most cases is having a view of plants and most times right off your patio. What would you call it? How far do things have to be to be a view of them? 100 yards?
I know many that request having plants close to their rooms for the privacy. We all understand this is not what you prefer and that is ok but I don’t believe everyone will call the plants scary (new description to me). Maybe a resort with less plants will be less intimidating. Also I would expect some Tahiti rooms to have some problems since they are due for rehab. Where exactly did I say numerous guests had reported the smell.

I guess “handful” now means numerous. I can count on one hand how many people have said there was a musty smell out of all the reports from people who stayed in Tahiti. Sorry if most of us disagree with you but we have that right as much as you do of your opinion.

"In the dictionary (Websters) a cave or cavern: is to be enclosed in. Please take a look at the picture. It is an enclosed room."

will someone please show me a room that is not enclosed? does that make every room a cave then?

will someone please notify the tag fairy luvmy2girls should have a tag that says "reads the dictionary from cover to cover" ... lol

I stand corrected "numerous" was the wrong word "several" would have been more correct.

As far as where did I say (YOU SAID)---What I said was the word numerous, I think what I did was copied your post and pasted your quote"I didn't put words in your mouth" Read young man!

I said numerous!

As far as everything else (dry Humor and accurate descriptions based on my perception) If ya'll can't laugh and say oh well !!!! Than I guess Have a nice day is in order:D

I posted what was correct and accurate in my mind and I am entitled. By your own words tiki man "Tahiti rooms to have some problems since they are due for rehab." So my musty assesment was correct Every one want's to have a perfect stay at the happiest place in the world as some have said and this is true so it seems anytime someone "bashes" or desribes something that they feel puts a bad light on the "ALMIHGHTY POLYNESIAN RESORT" then everyone gets upset.

Every one please forgive me for making such a stir I was only trying to be helpful and boy has it gotten screwed up.
Best regards to all even you Tiki Man I will go now these are my last words on the subject I will not reply to this thread any more. So do your worst
:(

I am not upset at your report at all. I felt your initial trip report was well done and described your feelings very accurately. I am not bashing anyone and you can get as upset as you like. I just said I disagree with the use of the word cave but I am not going to start all that up again. I think everyone has heard enough. I have no problem posting the truth that some have told me that there are rooms with a musty smell in Tahiti so how is it that I am not reporting about the Polynesian honestly?

Oh and by the way….don’t call me young man. I am a year older than you.

Aloha

This looks just like the "view" from our room. I thought it was cool to have Jurassic Park style vegetation right outside our window. Certainly no lack of privacy as I usually fear with 1st floor rooms.

I will add that I appreciated the warning about potential "musty" rooms at the Poly. The place is n Florida, after all, where there is a constant struggle with mold, despite being a world-class resort. When I read this I purposely requested a building that had been recently renovated... We asked for Samoa or Raratonga and got Raratonga. Mom has asthma and would have gone ballistic if we had a "musty" room although I realized there were probably very few.

I loved our view of the Poly lawn, where hubby is a privacy-minded guy and would have loved the protection of the jungle-plants. Everyone has their likes and dislikes. What I believe matters, however, is that dissatisfaction with a room can typically result in reassignment. The staff seem very willing to understand that sometimes a specific room is just not what the guest had in mind, and act accordingly to accomodate the guest. I let them know we wanted a ground floor room close to the lobby for Mom, and renovated please. We were thrilled to have 2 rooms that met all these requests. Had we gotten a room that was clearly in line for rehab, I would have asked to be moved.
