He started "reverse sneezing" really bad. Like, he couldn't breathe. He was clearly distressed :( It was all we could do to rub his chest and hold him close. Took him to the emergency vet who gave him meds and told us that it wasn't actually dangerous per se, it was just a nasty case of asthma.

That was a night I don't wish to repeat.

Having an ill pet can be so scary! I am glad they were able to treat him and I hope he is doing well today.

So glad your dog is OK. I have been through similar experiences and it is terrifying. Did your veterinarian check your dog for valley fever?
They didn't, but I'll look into it. We'll be revisiting the vet in a few days anyway, so barring any emergencies, I'll bring it up then :) Thanks for the heads up!

We’ve had several dogs with allergies. They are prone to what I’ve heard vets call “reverse sneezing.” It sounds a lot like an asthma attack, like they’re snorting and gasping for air. It usually passes pretty quickly, but if they have a prolonged bout, there’s a trick to gently massaging their throat and covering one nostril to get it to stop. I’m not sure if this is the same thing. It definitely sounds scary, but it gets easier after you go through a few.

Hopefully your pup is doing better.

I’m glad your dog is ok 😍

My dog ❤️ started doing this a few weeks ago, albeit not that bad. It was bad enough for me to call for an emergency appt. I went on my lunch, and that was the diagnosis. He stopped the next day on his own

My cat has asthma. It is manageable. Really I don't do much because she HATES the ear drops. I do find it helps to be careful about allergens in the house. I will take her for a steroid shot if the pollen gets bad. Really, she sneezes a bit, but is otherwise pretty fine. It comes and goes.

I had a papillon that used to do this & my vet at the time told me to gently rub the dogs throat and it will pass, so I did and it would work.

I looked up videos and now they say to cover one nostril too, seems easy enough to try.

One of my dogs does this. The vet showed me the rub the throat/plug a nostril combo but added blowing into the open one. It's weird, but works.
