On lunch break, and in a mood, so I may as well.
I've considered getting one of those ribbons for my car, but I can't because I think they are exclusionary. To me, they say, "I'm a real American and if you were real too, you'd have one on your SUV just like I do". Patriotism is not a commodity.
The Democratic party needs a player like JFK who has the ability to communicate vision and to inspire.
I decided this year instead of worrying over whether to send holiday cards with the "Merry Christmas" message vs the "Happy Holidays" message, I'd go with "Peace on earth, good will toward men".
I think a lot can be learned from studying a President after he is no longer in office. As much as I disagreed with Ronald Reagen's politics, I thought he and his wife showed an enormous amount of class from the beginning of his illness until he died (and Nancy continues to show class). And Jimmy Carter has proven to be one of the few really great Americans.
I really hated the movie Finding Nemo, and feel a bit sheepish to admit that, since everyone else loved it. I can't even put my finger on why I hated it, all the characters just seemed incredibly whiny to me.
Regarding the Terri Schiavo case, isn't it ironic that the very same people who wanted massive public resources devoted to keeping her alive object to any kind of public support for those whose health and welfare could be safeguarded by such support? These are always the first people to step up to the plate and whine and moan about the free lunch program for desperately poor children, yet insist its only moral to pay to artificially maintain a brain dead person for countless years when there is no hope of recovery. Does this make any sense? Moral or otherwise?
I have to say I find my nieces wearing little mini-prostitute outfits quite disturbing, especially since their mother handpicks these outfits and talks about how hot they are.
Money that is spent on efforts to arrest, convict, and lock up casual drug users could be better spent elsewhere.
Getting older in some way sucks, but in other ways has so many wonderful compensations. It is so freeing. I love the company of women my age or older, we're past the competitive "don't advertise your man" stage, and can really enjoy fulfilling relationships with one another. If DH God forbid dies before I do, I'll never remarry. I'll just get a young boyfriend and live in a house with a bunch of other old ladies, just like they did in The Golden Girls.
My 6 year old can get away with a lot, but "shut up" is absolutely banned around here. The phrase is used far too much in children's movies and TV, too. Makes me crazy as a parent. I'd much rather have them see some naked bodies or hear an honest "oh sugar" (you get the idea) than have them learn to treat other people with that sort of disrespect.
Ahhh, back to work. I do so love this thread, it certainly is a therapeutic mid day break.
