Hi - I know absolutely nothing about playing music, along with my husband. But, our children apparently have that ability. Our son is in 9th grade and has outgrown his student alto saxophone. We'd like to pass it down to his sister, she is starting music this summer, and get him a new one. Probably an intermediate, but possibly a professional. He does say he wants to study music in college, although that that could certainly change, so we'd want this to be a long lasting one. I am prepared for the cost, but am hoping to stay under $1500.

I have no idea what brands/makes/models are good ones, does anyone? Our local music shop only carries Jupiter brand and they are $2000+ at the store. I can find lots for less on the internet, but worry I am not buying a quality one. I am hoping that someone one the budget board might have some helpful info, and any suggestions to keep the cost to what we had budgeted. Thankyou!

My daughter is in concert and marching band, and the best thing we've found is to talk to the band director/teacher and see if he knows any former students looking to sell their instruments. Especially with the year coming to an end now, there will probably be seniors who will not be continuing with music into college/adulthood who would be looking to sell an instrument that is probably only a few years old.

I agree that you should talk to the brand director for advice.

Also, branch out a bit to music stores outside your local area. It would be worth a drive to get your child a good instrument.

I love the DIS... :lovestruc It's like, as soon as some question pops into my head, there is magically already a thread about the exact same thing. Right down to the specific instrument, in this case! :goodvibes

I was just going to ask the same thing about a new(er) alto sax for my freshman DS. Thanks to your suggestions, I just emailed his band directors and hopefully they can point me in the right direction. :)
