When I got home today I saw a missed call from 407-000-1234. Anyone know what is could be? I've entered a bunch of sweepstakes lately, do they call you if you won? I tried looking up the number but there is no listing. Now its killing me. I want to stay home from work tomorrow and see if they call again!!:sad2: I've never been called from there before.

sounds like they want you to find out how you can lower your interest rates.

indicates that it is a telemarketer - I wouldn't skip work to find out.

I have received numerous calls from Disney reps for different reasons - reservation problems, offers, surveys - and they always indicate either 407-939-xxxx, or Disney XXX on the caller ID.

Sorry it's not better news.

I think if it was a sweepstakes they would have left a message.

Around the holidays/early January there was a segment on our local (Kansas City) news about a number of reports of a scam originating from a 407-000-xxxx number. I didn't catch the whole story and don't remember all of the details, but I am pretty sure it said something about there being a recording about lowering a credit card rate and being asked to press 9. It mentioned the Orlando area code with the next three numbers being zeros which is a huge red flag because that phone number could not exist. Just another example of having to always having your guard up.

That was my first thought but this is the email I got- We actually received a call last week from the
809 area code. The woman said 'Hey,
this is Karen . Sorry I missed you--get back to us
quickly. I have something important to tell you.' Then she repeated a phone number beginning with 809 We didn't respond.
Then this week, we received the following
e-mail:

Do Not DIAL AREA CODE 809, 284, AND
876

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION
PROVIDED TO US BY AT&T. DON'T EVER DIAL AREA CODE 809

This one is being distributed all over the US . This is pretty scary, especially given the way they try to get you to call.

Be sure you read this and pass it on.

They get you to call by telling you that it is information about a family member who has been ill or to tell you someone has been arrested, died, or to let you know you have won a wonderful prize, etc.
In each case, you are told to call the 809 number right away.. Since there are so many new area codes these days, people unknowingly return these calls.

If you call from the U.S. , you will apparently be
charged $2425 per-minute.

Or, you'll get a long recorded message. The point is, they will try to keep you on the phone as long as possible to increase the charges.
WHY IT WORKS:

The 809 area code is located in the Dominican Republic .
The charges afterward can become a real nightmare. That's because you did actually make the call. If you complain, both your local phone company and your long distance carrier will not want to get involved
and will most likely tell you that they are simply providing the billing for the foreign company. You'll end up dealing with a foreign company that argues they have done nothing wrong.

Please forward this entire message to your friends, family and colleagues to
help them become aware of this scam.

The last time I saw a call from 407 (Disney) it was because I had requested something from DVC and it was a call regarding DVC. I thought the same thing as OP-I thought I had won a contest since I had entered a few:sad2: .

Sounds scammy to me...timeshare sweepstakes scammy. Disney would leave a real number and would leave you a message. If you're doing a lot of entries, some may very well be "contests" used by timeshares to lure you into supposedly cheap vacation packages. Be on high alert when whoever it is calls you bacl.

There is a general telemarketing scheme going around for several months now. It involves calls from "Out of area" or from phone numbers that appear to be real, or even desirable, but are spoofed. They often take the form of a recorded message from or about:

- Your credit card service (no actual name is given)
- Your auto warranty expiring
- An offer to lower your mortgage rate

or other things that sound like something you would need to deal with. The message tells you to press 1 to be connected to an agent, or press 2 to stop receiving calls. Of course, "2" doesn't actually do anything except prove to them that you are listening all the way through the message.

I believe that if you press 1, the company can then turn around and claim that YOU'VE established a business relationship with them, so they can call you endlessly without disguising themselves without fear of the DNC regulations. Just try to prove that they called you first...

They do not leave messages on answering machines/voice mail, because they need a human to push a button. If you don't answer after a couple of rings, I believe it gives up automatically before it can be answered.

It's just the latest scammy, scummy telemarketing ploy because the DNC list killed their business.

WOW! and to think I thought I was going to DW for free:rotfl: I do appreciate the responses. Now I am not in the least bit excited and off to work I go!

Don't even return strange long distance calls. No point in wasting minutes or long distance charges.
(Also see above)

If there was only one of those humongous charges in a blue moon, phone companies have been known to wipe it off your bill.

Do not do call forwarding unless you really need it. Each time a call is forwarded, an outgoing call is charged to the forwarding phone which could be a long distance call.

(Few and far between nowadays) If you have a friend who owns a pay phone (perhaps in a business he owns) you can return 800 calls to do-not-call offending callers from that phone. Each time the caller unless rejecting all calls from public phones will be surcharged and in most cases on top of any flat rate calling plan they may have and your friend will collect that surcharge.

What the phone companies should REALLY do is stop 10 digit dialing to these places. If I have to dial umpteen digits to talk to someone in the UK, I should have to do the same to call the Dominican Republic or wherever that is outside of the regulated calling area. That way I at least have to think about where I'm calling instead of assuming its in the US because it has a "standard" area code and is covered under my free long distance...

(When I was younger I made a phone call to an 801 area code on my parents phone, not realizing that was Utah or something and not just another toll-free code...)

The phone companies should give a credit for wrong numbers for example calling Hawaii (808) and accidentally dialing 809.

It would be up to companies such as Disney to put more into voice mail messages. If there is a problem with my reservation I should be able to hear about it in the voice mail right away instead of having to call back and wait on hold.

A good idea that Disney could help start is to leave code numbers instead of phone number or links in both phone messages and email. The guest would call the general Disney number (or go to the website) that everyone knows and give the code number and be switched to the appropriate department. Eliminates spoofing and guests calling strange numbers or going to strange websites.

I missed a call from the very same 407 # last week but they did not leave a message...I thought it was strange because of the "000" so I simply tried to call the # back and it was indeed an invalid telephone #...I am sure it was just a telemarketer.

I had this happen before our last trip in June of last year. My caller ID showed something Disneyworld, but when I called WDW back (using the main number) they couldn't find any reason someone would have called me.

you can google the phone number and find more info about it, usually. I just googled it and it seems to be a scam, someone wanting cc info and to lower your interest rate. Here's what one person had to say...........

30 Dec 2008
I answered and played along, they wanted credit card info to help you lower your intrest rate. I told them I was interested but I was on cell phone and didn't have CC with me, they called back 3 times and it was from a different number (321-397-2036) with the name (O'Neil Consulting) but it was the same people on the phone. Sounded like some kind of CC scam to me
Caller ID: 407-000-1234
Caller: O'Neil Consulting

That one is absolutely a scam. NEVER give your card number over the phone to these people. Your credit card company already knows it, so if they are asking for it they are proving that they are not your credit card company. Its a phone phishing scam.

(By the way, NOT related...)

scamsters...hate 'em. Especially when they show on my caller i.d. as Florida numbers. Hope springs eternal...Disney never calls me:sad2:
