I am so upset right now... On the way to work this morning, I saw a car hit a cat and keep driving - on a very busy road. I saw the cat try and get up but fell down so I pulled to the side of the road, jumped out, stopped traffic, and picked the kitty up and out of the way. 2 other cars stopped to help me, one being a woman whose son happed to work in a vets office down the road (thank goodness), and the other a man (around my age) to help with the traffic. The poor cat was terrified and tried to get out of my arms, but was looked at me with those helpless eyes and finally calmed down a bit. The woman called her son to tell her about the accident, and the man gave me his sweatshirt to wrap the cat in - I hopped in his car (left mine at the side of the road), and we raced off to the vets. They took us right in, but unfortunately the kitty had massive internal injuries and died in my lap on the way to the vet. There was no blood, guts, mess at all - kitty just looked like he was sleeping. I cried there in the vets - the poor kitty had no collar - might have been a stray. I can't believe people can hit an animal and keep on going - so horribly cruel. Anyways, the man - who was visibly upset too - drove me back to my car and we went on our separate ways. My co-workers thought I was crazy to get in the car with a stranger, but I just wasn't thinking he was dangerous b/c of his concern for the cat too. We both did our good deed, and at least poor kitty died in some warm arms holding him.

Poor thing. Makes me so sad to hear stories like that. Such a shame he couldn't of hung in there long enough for you to get him to the vet. That was so kind of you to try to help. Chances are knowing me, I wouldn't of given a second thought to hopping into the man's car to save the kitty too. Foolish, but true.
DH would be reading me the riot act if he ever heard of me doing something like that. Guess we don't think straight at times like that. In this case you were lucky the guy wasn't a wacko.

that made me cry. as a cat owner, I thank you for doing that as I would hope someone would do that for my McKinley.

Once, my dog Jefferson was hit by a car and a nice college student took her in and contacted us immediately (thank god for collars!) - thankfully, she just broke her leg and you would never guess now she did. I don't know what we would have done but for that kind college student.

What a kind thing you did! So sad, but you gave the poor kitty some comfort in it's final minutes. Just a hunch on my part about human nature; anyone who would stop to help an injured animal probably isn't going to be someone dangerous. The type of people I would avoid are the ones that would hit a cat and then drive on.

Sorry you had to experience that. Just wanted to comment on the statement above......

The road I travel during the morning is VERY busy....if a pet owner is not responsible enough to contain their animal and I hit it - I am NOT going to stop traffic and endanger someone's life to "check" on the animal.

The road was very busy, and the cat was moving, so it didn't appear to be dead, just very hurt. It wasn't till I picked up the cat that I saw the extensive injury to him/her. It's one thing if you travel on a highway, parkway, etc, but on a regular street road? That's a different story. It was a stray I believe b/c it didn't have a collar. It's a few hours later, and it is still hard to work - still thinking about poor kitty. I too think that I was so upset about the cat and so was the man, so I took it on faith he was ok. - Guess god was watching over me while I was watching over the cat.

This story just makes me cry. I can't bear to see any animal be hit or dead on the side of the road. Excuse me, I'm going to go in the living room and cuddle Baxter a minute. :sad1:

Sorry you had to go thru that this morning.

Lack of a collar doesnt = stray though. My cats dont have collars. I cant keep them on them. We've went through about a dozen collars in the last 2 years. I've given up. There is just not point in putting them on anymore. They never last more then 2 days.

That's just another reason why cats need to be contained. We have manditory leash laws and licenses for dogs, but people are allowed to just let their cats wander loose. There's nothing nicer than spending the weekend gardening only to find that some cat feels your flower garden makes a nice literbox...

I'm so sorry you had to go through that. You did the best you could and very lovingly.
