Saving Time At Test Track - Is This OK?

In order to save some time in the TT line, as we went into the room where you design your own car, we chose not to design a new car and used an old one already on our band. We then walked out of the room and back into the waiting line further ahead. Granted it didn't save us a huge amount of time, but we did get ahead of all of the other people that went into the car design room with us and did save us the time it would have taken to design a car. No CM said anything and one even held the door for my wife. My moral dilemma - was this line cutting or has the car design part always been optional?

I would call it optional. I don't see anything wrong with what you did. It isn't much different than the fact that the line splits up into the design rows and stations when you get there and when they open the door for the ride it is kind of a free for all, and the people that were way behind you in line, sometimes wind up way in front of you after the car design. When we went through the single rider line last year, they gave us the option of stopping to design a car, or just moving on through- so I wouldn't consider it much different than that. I didn't know that the old ones would stay on your band or that you could use it again.

the car design room is pretty much a free for all. there is no order to enter or leave the area. you don't even have to pick and old car. i take the single rider line and just go right past the design area. as long as you don't go past any rope/barrier/CM without being allowed you aren't doing anything wrong

IMO it's always been optional. We never stopped to design a car. Not interested. No one has ever said anything about us skipping it.

I really like designing the car (my DH is very much a 'car' guy) he loves to see how his car ranks at the end of the ride.

I never paid much attention, didn't even know the doors on the other side were still open. Good to know though, just in case we didn't feel like designing a car.

Yes, you can. The FP line feeds in with the stand-by line prior to reaching the design room.

Whoa! Local and done TT a zillion times and hate the car design. Like pens above, I just never noticed the doors could still be open or considered skipping this. We usually design super fast and move to the exit door to get a jump on it but you're still behind everyone in the other design studio. Have to try this - thanks!

I also LOVE designing the car!! It is REALLY so much fun. i cannot really understand skipping it? (of course i understand doing so with single rider option). The colors, the decals. Sometimes we try for the goofiest looking car possible, other times we really try to be efficient and competitive. We love to see if our car "wins" each part of the ride, and afterwards we check the big board to see how we did compared to others that day.

So feel free to cut ahead of us, we do not care, just speaking for us of course.

We started skipping the car design a couple of years ago, and now just walk straight through the doors as soon as we get in the room. On our trip earlier this month, the CM at the merge point started laughing, and said, "I guess you didn't want to design a car!" She seemed to think it was funny, so I figured they must not have a problem with it. We had a second CM with a similar reaction on the same trip, too. Neither DD nor I have any interest in designing the cars, so we're happy to skip it.

ETA: We also saw someone at Dinosaur try and skip the pre-show, and she got slapped down pretty fast -- first, for trying to open the door, and then for leaning against it so that it opened a crack. Both times the CM announced that you couldn't leave the room. But with TR, the doors are open and no one seems to notice if you leave early. It seems that there's a distinction between a true pre-show and the TT designing.

Things like TT & SOTMK are a bit different. You must use the same band you used when you designed the car or played the game because those things are tied to a specific RFID chip; there is no universal link like there is with park tickets.

In fact, we often just do single-rider after our first ride (where we design the car), and you get through the line even faster.

I've also used a design from a previous trip, although I think they must clear out the database on occasion...it doesn't always work.

Another thing you can do is design a car before you get in line or after you ride. As you exit the ride, as you go thru the interactive area, but before the showroom, there are three design stations on the right. You can design your next car there and skip the experience when you go for the ride. This is especially useful in the single rider line as the design stations in single rider don't allow full customization. I did this at the end of my last trip, thinking I'd use it on my last day at Epcot, but TT was down, so I'm hoping to use it next trip...

That makes more sense. I was just surprised to see one still available to use.
