Ok I need some tips on how to get a home haircut that looks ok. My mom said she would do it for me, but I dont want to look like a freak when shes done. This will save us 30 bucks.

I've done my sons and husbands hair for almost 10 years. I bought a nice (read expensive) set of clippers and have used them since.

Boys/men are easy, especially if they have an simple style.

I've only occasionally done my daughters hairs--sometimes its just a tiny trim. Her hair is more intimidating since it is thick and long.

im a hair dresser... what kind of cut were you trying to do?.. hopefully something simple ^-^;?

let me know, i might be able to help try and explain it.

You are brave. I do have to add, really quick, the 2 best haircuts I've had in the last 3 yrs were $12.95 at the Mastercuts in the mall. Honestly.

Ok, don't laugh, but someone gave me a Flowbee.

I got really brave and let DH use the 6" length on my hair. It gave me a very nice layered look. I personally think it is too short, but DH loves it.

I plan to purchase an additional 2" and go for 8" layers next time, after it grows out some.

This is GREAT that it works because I cut all 4 of my boys' hair with $20 clippers that I have had for 2 years and now I can get mine cut at home as well.

you guys have no idea how painful this thread is to read. lol! :P

and omg.. do NOT use that method Rachel Ray is using *dies*

Good luck!

My DH cuts my hair, I cut everyone else's hair. Just one of the many ways we cut corners to save money. :)

I have been cutting my own bangs for years, but recently started to cut everyone's hair in my family...that is a DH, DD (4) and DS (6), my father's hair and myself. I cut the front and back of my own hair, but it is very straight and long, so it is a little easy. I bought a good set of clippers and searched for info on-line and checked out a book at the library...then I tried it. I am getting better each time and so far everyone's cuts are clean and professional looking. I think it is definetely worth it to try it out...it not only saves money, but it saves our family so much time. It was always a hassle to find an afternoon between school and activities to get the kid's haircut (plus, my DS has sensitive skin and like to shower after a haircut) so doing it at home is a huge benefit for our family. Goodluck.

I cut my dd's hair. But hers is wavy, so super easy- you can't tell if it is straight or not! :thumbsup2

I have trimmed my sons hair around the edges to try and save time between cuts, but next time I am going to brave it and try to do it all myself! I've been watching them get cut for a while, so thing I can do it. Dh is another story! :rolleyes1

We have a friend down the street do ours, so we can get all 5 of us done for $25, but still adds up. I am growing my hair out so I don't have to get it cut as often. It is short and grows really fast, so I have to get it cut every 4 weeks or looks horrible. I haven't gotten a cut since Nov. and look a fright! I am glad it is winter and I don't have to go out much!

I also have a FloBee. Everyone laughed when I purchased this about 5 years ago. Now everyone whats me to cut their hair. I only do short hair that is layered. DH, DS, BILs and myself. I wouldn't touch my DD long hair BUT if it is just long and straight you could easily cut it with enough attachments.

I have cutting my own hair but usually when I want it cut I want it cut right now and nobody has openings.. My fault of course. I go in at least once a year and get a professional cut.

I have discovered that enough hair gel and cover many mistakes :rolleyes1

I've got one too!!!!! Haven't been brave enough to let DH use it on me -- but have used it on DH and DS for the past 2 years -- it has paid for itself a hundred times over -- it is really easy to use. We just don't tell anyone that I flobee their hair
:goodvibes

I have cut my dd hair. It was after she decided to give herself a new haircut. :rotfl: I called our hairdresser and she was out of town for the week. So, I did it myself. It took me about 45 minutes to get it to look OK. Later, we went to our hairdresser and she was like so where did you go and get her hair cut? I did not really want to say that I "messed" it up more. She said that it was really good and only needed a minor touch up. She was shocked when I told her that I did it. When ds needed a hair cut right before Christmas and I could not get him there when they had an openinig, I did it myself. I think I might get up the nerve to do dd more often. Her cut is pretty easy.

Just an idea, but if you are within reasonable distance of a beauty school, you can get a hair cut really cheap there from the students. If you're worried, you can ask for a more advanced student. HTH:goodvibes

when I was a little girl (think 4 -5 years old) my mom put pink tape across my bangs and cut them. THEY WERE TOO SHORT! And I have class pictures to prove it........:rolleyes1

Yes! My sister did this a few times. By herself and her 3 kids. It was really cheap. I am going to do this as well. There's a Paul Mitchell school up at Tysons Corner, but it's 60 miles and I can't go all the time. They'll even wax!

what is a floby?

I don't know how to describe it other than

this attachment to your vacuum cleaner that has internal blades. This main attachment comes with other attachments that are straight or angled -- they can be adjusted to different lengths.

The basic idea is that the vacuum sucks the hair in and the blades cut it off.

I've only used it on the guys in my house. I use the flobee to give them a basic cut and then use shears to shape it up.

Mine came with an instrucion booklet and video -- very helpful.

Some ponytail styles are easy to maintain, just draw all the hair back. Cut off the end every several months using ordinary scissors.

There is one drawback, getting started. It may take well over a year (no cutting at all, yay!) before the bangs are long enough to reach back and be held by the rubber band. Been there, tried that, gave up.
