Saving on food when flying? Question

We will be flying and will not have a car when we get to Disney. We won't be able to have a grocery stop, as relatives are picking us up.

Has anyone taken snack type foods on the airplane? How much is okay to bring, can I stuff a suitcase or is that inappropriate? I have never needed to do this and am clueless.

I then heard about a shopping service who will deliver to the resorts anf orlando area--they have a sliding scale of like $15 for $100 worth of groceries--here is the link to their website---------good luck

As long as you don't exceed the allowed number of bags or any weight limits, pack all you want. You'll have more room for your Disney purchases on the way home.

Why not mail a package to yourself at your resort? I did this last year and it worked out pretty good. I sent t-shirts, glowsticks, juiceboxes, crackers and fruit snacks in a heavy cardboard box. I included my confirmation number on the box as well as the dates that I would be staying. I used UPS and their website had a calculator on it to help me decide when to ship the package from home so that it would arrive in time for my visit. They even came to my home to pick it up! Talk about easy!

Most airlines are discouraging bringing food in suitcases. Not only because some set off some detectors, but the scanners/searchers may open packages. I don't think I want to eat a box of cereal or crackers that has been rifled through by a stranger. I had my suitcase searched a two years ago in Orlando. However they did leave a notice in my bag stating it had been searched. So glad I packed my undies in a zip lock bag

We always pack a small duffle bag with breakfast and snack foods and carry it on the plane. It almost always gets searched, but we have never been given a hard time about it. It becomes our souvenier bag on the way home!

When I fly I do a small bag (the size most people carry on..20") filled with food, and check it with all my luggage. BTW all my luggage is searched..., I think because my home airport does not have xray machines like MCO.

For our last trip, I shipped (via UPS) a box of snacks and diapers to myself in case of the resort I was going to. It didn't cost much - about $10, I think, and was much better than lugging it. You can call the resort to get the exact mailing address. I think they told me to put my arrival date on the box. I called the day before I got there to confirm it had gotten there and it had. It was brought to our room right after check in. I would highly recommend doing this.

Bring it on the plane in a small suitcase. I have packed some things that went in checked luggage and have had no problem either way. As long as you don't exceed baggage don't worry. Plus, your food in the bags there will be room in the suitcases for stuff you buy there!

We have used netgrocer in the past. It was pretty reasonable. We bought cereal, peanut butter, snacks, water etc. and it was waiting for us upon arrival. We'll be doing it again this June. Either netgrocer or wegoshop.

I always pack a soft cooler (it's about 15" x 18" and 12" deep) and carry it on the plane. We pack bagels, individual serving tubes of cream cheese (available at Costco & Sams), blocks of cheese (cheddar or harder type cheeses), jam or jelly, yogurt tubes (like Gogurt), beefstick (Hickory Farms, yum!) & hard salami, nuts, fruit leather, etc... Carrying it on the plane allows it be searched easier and also keeps snacks handy for the kids.

I also pack a jar of peanut butter, microwave popcorn, granola & cereal bars, and juice & milk boxes in my suitcase.

Never had a problem with either one.

What sets off the scanners are dense foods; things like cured meats and stacks of chocolate bars. (Chocolate apparently sometimes looks like plastique on an xray.)

Just don't put any perishables of any kind in checked baggage; if the bag gets lost, it will rot and ruin the bag.

BTW, for shipping, look into FedEx Ground instead of UPS. I've found that FedEx' prices are consistently MUCH lower.

I have mailed boxes from home. Not much of a problem.

This trip we are going to use www.wegoshop.com Very reasonable rates, ($15.00 for up to $100.00/groceries), and awesome reviews. We are using a towncar service but get in late, and don't want the hassle of groceries, at 10pm, on a Friday night.

If you pack food, in checked luggage, it will most likely be searched. Ours was and I've read other resports of that.

We saved a ton of money (as well as aggravation waiting in line all day to feed the "starving children" in the parks!!!) and sent a box of non-perishable items to our resort before leaving home. We included crackers, pop tarts, breakfast bars, juice boxes, single serve applesauces, etc. in the box. We did use the grocery stop from the car service we hired to get diapers, wipes, fruit, and a case of water after arriving. Upon checking in, we were advised our box had arrived and would be delivered right to our room, and it was! We tripped over the empty box all week and then decided to pack it with our souvenirs and ship it back home the day before checking out. The resort front desk handled taping it up and shipping it out for us without any problem. Thank goodness, because we did not realize how many souvenirs we had accumulated!

Well, I have to ask with the other poster, why won't your relatives make a grocery stop? If it's at Publix or one of the other grocery chains, you can keep it under 30 minutes, just like the towncar service! This is not the time to explore a Super Centre!

FedEx Ground is a good alternative to carrying lighter weight items with you. For our August, 2003, trip, I shipped a 12-can soft cooler, some personal care products for my friend, Leu, (which were heavy, btw) as part of our pampering ourselves ladies-only trip, and some snack items she loves but can't buy in California. It was under $10 to ship from Arizona to WDW. I was able to pack the cooler into my luggage on the return trip and abandon the box.

The TSA website recommends packing all food in your carry-on luggage. It's likely to be hand-searched, but you're there with it, so you'll know if something is opened and you prefer not to eat it.

The grocery delivery service sounds good, as well. $15 to $20 isn't all that much. You would spend more on a taxi!

On our last trip we packed one medium sized suitcase with nothing but non perishable groceries. We had Tang, cereal bars, squeezable peanut butter and jelly, tuna kits, Pringles, fruit roll ups and more. We did have a little tag inside that said our suitcase was inspected by the TSA but nothing was disturbed.
Our next trip I may pack some of the same but I will need to stop at the grocery store just to get some bottled water, bread, and a few other things. I'm going to look into the wegoshop since I haven't tried that before!

You can pre-order on the internet with Albertsons and everything will be ready for you when you get there....you just walk in and pay!
