Saved my change - the payoff

WOW, I love reading everyone's savings stories! I'm not stopping after this trip, maybe I'll start quietly saving for the next...;)

I counted our change last night for our upcoming surprise trip and so far I rolled $270 in change! I ran out of quarter rolls and need to go get more today.

I am so excited with this amount considering that we cleaned out the change jar in April to go to Foxwoods!!

Have fun everyone and keep saving!!!!!:p

My daughter has been doing this for almost 3 years. When she was about 2 she started asking to go to Disney. Daddy promised her when she was 5 we could go. She turned 5 today:) but we're waiting until September to go. She has saved birthday money, allowance, quarters "pulled" from her ear by uncles and grandpas, and most importantly the laundry money! You know, the money everyone leaves in their pockets that comes out in wash?:Pinkbounc always a great source of income around here. So far she has saved about $200. This is for her to spend at Disney. I figure this way she won't be nickel and diming me to death. And I have sworn to let her buy what ever she wants to spend her money on. ( maybe I'll lend a little guidance)

We are trying to do the saved change thing too. Occasionally, we will drop in a few bills too. Our biggest stumbling block with this effort is our addiction to the Check Card. It's hard to have change if you are using plastic. But, I have been hitting the ATM a bit more than usual, just to make money appear in the Disney Fund. We too are saving some in Disney Dollars too. I have told my honey that all I want for any holiday that usually requires a gift is Disney Dollars. We have over $50 so far, but we still have 5 months to go! Mickey

The first time I had my DDs do this they were about 4 and 5. My parents were taking us all (17) to Disney. I told them they could spend anything they saved. Well, they did odd "jobs" for everyone...When we got ready to go they had over $300! This was about 20 years ago and that was alot of money for 2 small children. They offered to pay for two nights at the campground for Grandma and Grandpa. I was so proud of my little girls. There were two campsites and we had a special rate of $15 a night for a couple of the nights so it cost them $60. Isn't that a Disney deal!!!

I am addicted to using my debit card too. I almost never carry cash. That being said, I have been saving change for over a year and have saved roughly over $1200. We've used it for souvener $ and character meal money for the last 3 trips this year.

I can only dream how much I could save if I dealt strictly in cash lol.

I also put in all rebate checks. That adds up quickly too.

We do it too...when I get down about not being at Disney soon enough-I count it up and deposit it into the "Disney Fund"

Last year we went to Niagra Falls on just the "crayon money"-it paid for 2 nites at the Falls...and the package we got allowed us 2 dinners (one at the skylon and one at the holiday inn and 2 breakfasts...the rest of the money went torward lunch and anything else we wanted-and we still came home with $$$...pretty impressive.

The boyfriend tries to hord his change...especially quarters for laundry...but every now and then I find him tossing a couple of handfulls of change in the bank...

we add in any winnings from scratch off lottery tickets too...

DS has one of those huge water bottles that he puts in money that his daddy gives to him. It started me thinking I will start my own jar. DH does not know I am saving all my change. ;) I am saving for our February vacation. Also I have started to do Ebay. We have a separate account set aside. We will not touch this money till we start to pay for our February vacation. :D

I started DS (7) saving all the change he could find about a month ago, told him that before our trip in late September we would exchange for bills and that could be his spending money, also this is a good way of teaching you child to count money and add (great project for homeschoolers), every piece of change he finds he adds to his total, so far he has about $20.00 but that's only three weeks of savings, by the end of September he'll have probably at least $100.00 and I won't have to worry about saying "no, you can't have that" as he'll have complete control over his own money.

I too use a debit card all the time but am making myself use some cash so DS can continue his savings.

Once you have counted all of that change, what do you do with it? Disney Dollars? American Dollars? Bank deposit?

Maddle

I go to those change sorter machines at the grocery stores , where they give you cash (bills) (yeah...they charge a little...but I think some of it goes to a charity) then we are cashing it in for Disney Dollars for my daughter to spend :)

Hi!

Thanks for the tips on the change jar. My change jar is a glass castle and it if filling up fast.

I usually pay for everything mostly by check. I think I'm going to plan on taking out cash a little more often so that I have more spare change.

Also whenever I get near the Disney Store which is about once a month I'm going to purchase a few Disney Dollars. That way I have to spend these dollars on Disney and not cheat and take money from the castle.

Have a great day!
Renee

We save change too...
My DS now 5 has two different sets of "Mickey Banks" 1 is STRICTLY for Canadian coin and the other is STRICTLY for American coin( we often get both as our change here).. and boy oh boy if you mix the two when putting in your own donation....you better watch out. Every time we have change in our pockets he sweetly asks if any of it can go to his "Disney Trip Money" and he searches through it looking for American coin"Oh My Gosh!" he will say "AMERICAN penny!" and skip to his American Mickey.
We haven't counted yet but the banks are pretty heavy.
It teaches my DS that good things are worth saving for.
