Well we can't financially make it to Disney this year, but after we send two kids off to college we are taking our three 13 yo's to St. Augustine for the week (8/20-27). We will take a day trip to Orlando and shop at Downtown Disney and eat at Beaches and Cream.

I was looking for a place to stay in Savannah that can hold 5 people and not break the bank (breakfast included is a plus!). We don't have a lot of money for this trip, but I am trying to prolong the vacation.

Any suggestions?

Thanks :)

Check out the River Street Inn. We have stayed there before, and so far is the least expensive place I have founf right there on the Savannah River. There are shops next to it as well as below it. Sign up for e-mail, they are always sending me info for discounts that are going on.

Hi, just FYI, two of us stayed in Savannah about 6 weeks ago. We did Priceline for "Downtown Historic District" 2 1/2 star and got brand new Springhill Suites for $59. It included a free breakfast, walking distance to everything including the trollies, river, and shops.

Not sure what you are seeing for prices but this was a great deal for us. Of course no guarantee of this hotel but I would be willing to bet they are all pretty nice in that area. We have used Priceline many times and never been disappointed. Of course the 3rd little one is kind of an extra but who's counting!

I feel for you that you cannot spend more time at Disney World but will still be able to get a fix by visiting Downtown Disney and Beaches and Cream!

Last August we stayed at the Springhill Suites Savannah Downtown/Historic District. I wonder if it is the same one mentioned by tednvon.

If I recall, it was within easy walking distance to City Market, River Street, and The Lady and Sons. The Savannah Visitor's Center is also close by; in fact, I could see it out of our window. (We were in a higher floor.) The hotel offers a decent free breakfast. The only bad thing is that like most hotels in the Historic District, the hotel charges $16 for in/out parking. There is metered parking in the area. I just wish I got tednvon's rate!!!

Enjoy Savannah!!!! It is my 2nd place to visit, after WDW of course!!!!!

Just returned from Savannah...Do not stay at the Marriott. Nice location on the River, but it is stuck in 1985. There is a new Aria just off Bay St. Great looking place. There was also Hampton Inn & Suites that also looked OK.

Thanks for the recommendations.

I've never used Priceline before. I've always needed two rooms and couldn't book larger rooms. Do I pay without knowing what I'm buying? When do I find out where I've booked? So confusing.......for this first timer, but I'd love to get a $59.00 rate. Gee I could even afford the parking fee.

Hi, sorry I am late getting back...Priceline is very reputable discount hotel service...here is step by step if you want to try...

go to www.priceline.com
click on the Hotels icon.
Click on "name your own price"
type in Savanna Ga. in the hotel box
Confirm by clicking on Savanna Ga when it gives you the choice.
Click Bid Now
Choose dates and MAKE SURE they are accurate. I would suggest waiting to bid until 4-6weeks before you go.
Check ONLY the "Historic District" when it gives choices. If you want other areas of Savanna you can click those also.
Click 2/12 stars
Put in what ever bid just you want just below. I am not sure what is peak vs.non peak in that area. I know $58-$62 worked for several folks in April and May.
Put in name on Reservation...just your first and last name, does not have to be credit card name.
If you want open and account or just skip and go to "NEXT"
A confirmation page will come up...DOUBLE CHECK DATE, LOCATION, NAME.
Scroll to bottom. Initial where you have read terms and conditions...Initials must match name on reservation.
Click next...
Put in credit card info...TAKE A DEEP BREATH...click "buy my room."
In about 10 to 30 seconds you will get a response...If it says "Congratulations" you have a room. Unless it is a big holiday or special event weekend, you should have a good chance at this bid price.
If "Sorry" there are lots of options and they will give them to you. Do NOT give up, it is still the best deal going for rooms.
If congrats, you will have the name of the hotel, confirmation number, and website, address and so on.
Good Luck...In closing, the best Priceline rates in the country are for Disney area hotels. If you are on a really tight budget for 2 stars or 2 1/2 stars choosing from Lake Buena Vista, West Kissimmee, International Drive, Disney Maingate-Celebration, you can get hotels for under $40/night most anytime...Amazing!
At the top of the DIS Orlando Attractions Threads is a "Priceline bids" thread that shows what people are getting for rates.
By the way, this may look a little complex at first, but just a series of "point and clicks" and once you have done it, it is a breeze!!

Let us know how it goes...Ted

If you are using priceline or hotwire, there is a great site called biddingfortravel.com that will tell you some of the hotels people have gotten and prices they paid. Of course its not guaranteed you will get the same, but you can see the hotels that participate and do some research on tripadvisor.

We have used both hotwire and priceline in the past and never been let down. We do keep our expectations on the lower side, since we are paying lower. We do generally try to do 4* hotels though....

Anyway, good luck!

Tednvon - Thank you so much for the step by step directions. I need them. I copy and pasted them onto a word document so I can use them. I guess I will try in July to make reservations.

saysay I will check out biddingfortravel to prepare me for my bidding.

I don't know why I find this so scary to do. I guess I'll get over it as I study up on the process.

One time and you will be an expert!!
I agree with Julie that www.biddingfortravel.com really helps, especially with big cities and the Disney area. When the website pops up you will see little pictures of a car, hotel, and airplane...just start scrolling down until you get to Georgia and then click on "other than Atlanta hotels" A list of bids, cities and dates will appear from various Georgia cities.
Then scroll down and a few Savanna bid results should show up...Like I said I saw two that were around $60. It will give an idea and if the prices go up at all for dates in mid to late summer...

Good Luck...Ted

I stayed at a house in Savannah that I rented through VRBO (www.vrbo.com) It only slept 4 so I can't recommend it but I had a great experience renting through VRBO. The price was reasonable and we had a 2 br house with kitchen and parking. If you're interested in something larger than a hotel room, check it out.
