The DH and I are headed for HHI-DVC Resort next week :Pinkbounc and we are hoping to take in Savannah GA one day---we've heard a lot about Paula Dean's (Food Network) restaurant and were wondering whether anyone has tried it? We've heard that you have to be there by 9AM to get a table at lunch as the lines are tremendous, everyday, all day. Any suggestions? :)

Just poppin' in here! I went to Savannah in July and all I can tell you is if you want to stand in that heat GO FOR IT! I just couldn't. I love Paula, but I just couldn't do it. Lady and Sons isn't your only option though. I can't remember the name of it, but she has another restuarant. Good Luck! And report on it when you go. I went to the River House Inn Restuarant and LOVED the food and had a BLAST with my family. Maybe and alternative just incase you don't want to wait in line for PD> :thumbsup2

Make sure you add an "s" to the end of that web address. "Ladyandsons" or you only go to a search engine. :badpc:

You have got to get there early, early and do not attempt to bring small children with you, it will not be pretty.
If you are one of the first people in line you will still have a wait, but it will be much shorter. Then you are guranteed a table, plus it is the only way to get in. Once you get your reservation and time you can go and enjoy the day, then you just come back at your time. Upon return they are efficeint and you are shown to your table. It is pretty :cool1:

We ate there last year just before Thanksgiving at HH. We spent the night in Savannah and headed to the restaurant before opening to put our names on a list. We did some shopping while waiting and walked around a bit. The food was good but rich. Her sons were there that day. I had my pic taken with them and they signed a cookbook for my mom.

Good experience!

Thanks for all the replies....a lot of good, useful information. We'll report back if we make it there----love her show, but don't know whether the DH nor I are up for the waiting thing :sunny:

Well, we were lucky that we ate there BEFORE she became hugely famous! She was only doing "Door Knock Dinners" with Gordon Elliott at the time. We saw her on there and did some research. Found out she had a restaurant in Savannah and knew we just had to go there to eat. Yes, there was a line even back then (I think that was 2002?). We got there around 10:30 and got seated around 11:30 I think. So its been a popular place for a long time.

We all got the buffet--good and plentiful. Plenty of hoe cakes and VERY sweet tea. Its yummy!

Other places to try... The Pirates House. Dates way back to the beginning of the city. Food was good, not fantastic but we really enjoyed the atmosphere.

We had breakfast at Clary's too. That restaurant features prominently in the book and movie "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil". It looks really different now than it did in the movie but the breakfast was great. There's usually a long wait here too.

Only other place we ate was a seafood restaurant down on the River Walk. I can not remember what it was called though? Seafood Company? Or something. It was good too.

My mom's cousin used to live in Savannah in the historic district. She lived off Henry Street. That was the street where Forrest Gump was heading to find his "Jenny". I always thought that was funny.

Savannah is totally beautiful. I LOVED IT! So much history and the houses and squares are just unbelievable! We went in May and it was already hot! Hopefully your trip won't be so hot!

We have dined at Lady and Sons three times. Fairly long wait each time but well worth it. Once seated, the food and service was excellent.

Hi! We stopped in Savannah for a day on the way to HHI in June. Paula Dean's line was too much for my husband. A local friend recommended Mrs. Wilkes' --a similar restaurant with a much lesser wait. It was closed the day we were there, but I'd love to try it next time. Enjoy.

The line at Mrs. Wilkes can rival Paula's but it's good!

(Actually the line at Mrs Wilkes was worse, it's a much smaller resturant)

When we went it was unbearably hot waiting, but we really enjoyed our meal and had a great time. I would definitely wait again on a nice day, but not if it was really hot.

We went on March 16th, the day before the big St. Patty's Day Celebration in Savannah, and it was very crowded for the holiday! We arrived at the time they began taking reservations for the evening meal and the line for reservations was very long. We waited and were able to be seated at the first seating (maybe around 4:30 or 5:00) and were probably one of the last reservations to be taken. We enjoyed visiting the area around Paula Dean's restaurant after getting our reservation, but before dining. We had already toured the city before making our reservations, so we just looked around that part of town. I don't know that it was the best food I've ever eaten, but we were certainly glad we put forth the effort to eat there. We had a good time!

DizneyNutz: When are you going to be at HH? Dh and I are arriving on 9-17. Do not think we'll be dining at Paula's. They don't have fast passes do they? :rotfl2:

Maybe our paths will cross!

If not, hope you have a great time.

We were there last year, the last week of Aug. I guess we were lucky because we only had a 10 min wait. I do think we were there around 2 in the afternoon. We loved it. Even my 3 kids 4,7,9 at the time loved it, but they love watching her show. I can't wait to go back again.

MY DH and I were there in early August....we went at 10:30, were told we could eat at 11:00 or 1:30. There was virtually no line (two other people ahead of us) to make reservations at that time. When we went back at 1 for our reservations, the line wrapped around the block. If you want to do dinner there, they start taking reservations at around 3 or 3:30. I would definitely go...it is just too delicious to pass up!

We were just in Savannah this past weekend and had lunch at a place at the Lincoln Ramp at River Street. It was the Boar's Head and was in a 1780 old cotton warehouse. It's on the second floor above River Street and the food was outstanding. Our server was top-notch. I would definitely recommend this place for great food, no line and great atmosphere. The building was so authentic and they did have white table cloths, etc. and great bread before the meal. They also have a good looking dinner menu and the bar looked great also, although we didn't partake at lunch.I plan on taking my DH here on the way to Florida. The door even had a ship's porthole in it.

Please post after you have tried it. We have a big party going to HHI the week after Christmas. We have made a reservation at the Lady and Sons for the 29th of Dec. (Big parties can make a ressie). I would love to know how the food is. Thanks. Have a good trip!!

We ate at Mrs. Wilkes last March and absolutely loved the food. The food was served family style at large tables which you shared with other parties. You will be seated with total strangers, but you will get to know them quickly as you share the food. We had to wait about an hour to get in, but the food was worth the wait. I'm from the south and IMO there is two types of southern cooking - upscale southern (like you find in Southern Living) and just plain old country cooking (like my grandmother cooked). From her TV show I would put Paula in the first category and Mrs. Wilkes in the later. I can't wait to go back and eat there again.
