How bad is the altitude there? I read it is 7000 ft above sea level. If you have been there did you get altitude sickness? Just curious as we are thinking of a trip here at some point.

We're from the South, so we're used to sea level. My dad has asthma and moderate COPD. When we went out West, he was absolutely fine at elevations up to about 8,000 feet. We did a day trip to Cloudcroft, NM (just under 9,000 feet), and he said he could feel the effects on his breathing. No actual problems, but we decided not to push it and go any higher. Santa Fe should be 100% fine unless anyone in your family has severe breathing problems.

DH and I have been twice. We're definitely flat-landers, we never had any trouble with the altitude in Santa Fe. If I remember correctly, it was a gradual thing, as we were RVing all over New Mexico. We drove like crazy from the East coast and started sightseeing in Cortez, CO/Mesa Verde (something around 6,000 ft), then on to Alburquerque (around 5,300 ft).

If you fly there, I see how it could be a problem.

The only time I've ever had trouble with altitude while traveling was when I was pregnant and hiking. So hard to walk and breathe at the same time..... this was on Mt. Hood. Had to stop and be dizzy sometimes.

I never have a problem there. We either drive or fly into Albuquerque and drive there. It's a good thing too because it's one of my favorite places to visit.
