The Best Buy salesman told us that the IPod needs to be replaced every year because of the battery & that the screen scratches to easy.

He sold DD11 the SanDisk. What do you guys think? I'm clueless.

How do you Delete songs from Sandisk :confused3

First off I never believe anything a BB salesperson tells me. I do all my research before hand. Also I was at BB last night. The salesperson there too was pushing the sandisk...and you know why? They were all out of the Ipods. He was just pushing to make a sale...period.

No I believe any screen surface is capable of getting scratched, all depends on how you take care of it. I have an Ipod Nano. The front still likes new cause I keep it in its case.

As far as deleting and adding songs, the sandisk will show up as another storage device on your computer when you hook it up. So you just move songs to it just like moving files around on your computer. Same goes for deleting songs on it.

The Best Buy guy was selling us the IPod until I asked if we really needed the case. He said they were being suied for how easy it scratches. Then he said the battery wares out in a year & you have to buy a WHOLE new IPod.

My son just got a IPod nano. He researched alot of things before deciding to go with it. According to Apple the Nano battery will last about 2-3 years. Kind of like a cell phone battery does. The way I look at it the technology will be more advanced by then and DS will want something different. (He's 11 now) Since I'm not sure which IPod you are looking at he says....
"If it is a Nano go with it. If it is a shuffle, get a MP3 player. "

Good Luck!!

Also I do suggest a case. Even MP3 players can get scratched. And if you order it from apple.com you can get free engraving and shipping!! (At least as of last week you could!)

Nano, shuffle, I don't know! It's all foreign to me. Am I that technologically impaired? Would anyone care to explain this jargon to me? :confused3

You have been more helpful then you know! What you said is what the Best buy salesman said. DD11 is deciding if she will keep it or trade it in for the Ipod.

I'll be glad to help with some iPod terms :)

There are three versions of the iPod right now. The three lines are (in order of cost) iPod Shuffle, iPod Nano, iPod Video.

They each come in two (or three) sizes, for how much they can hold.

The shuffle is the least expensive, and has no screen to see what you are playing. It ranges from $69 (for about 120 songs) to $99 (240 songs).

The next line is the iPod Nano, which has three sizes-1, 2, or 4 gigabyte ($149, 199, 249 respectively). These are the smallest of the iPod line that have a screen, and hold 240, 500 or 1000 songs resectively. These can also show your digital pictures, but the screen is a tad small for that (from personal experance).

The final line is the iPod Video, which was released in September I belive. They are the most expensive of the iPod line, but hold the most and do the most. They can play both music and videos, as well as show pictures (and the screen is a good size to view the last two). The one that holds about 7,500 songs costs $299, and the one that holds 15,000 songs is $399.

As for battery life, that has been an issue on iPods. When I got mine for Christmas, I made sure to order the service plan. Much like buying a notebook computer, I feel safer with it. So far I have yet to do anything to my iPod (knock on wood), but if it would have battery issues, I woudl be covered I belive three years (I will search out the info for you).

Thank You so much. I really want to know about the service plan & battery issue.

The battery issue has a lot to do with how you condition and care for the battery on a daily basis. In most cases, most people do not have a problem. There were some high profile issues with the third generation iPod that were fairly universal. Apple was sued over it and settled a class action over it just a few months ago. The third generation iPods were those out about two or three years ago, so those problems have mostly been solved.

There are several things you can do to extend battery life:
* Always charge it with a USB 2.0 port. This is a high speed USB port and is standard on most computers made in the last two years.
* Set the backlight setting so that it only stays on for a few seconds. The default setting is 10 seconds, but you can set it as low as 2 or have it off entirely.
* Avoid skipping songs and messing with the menu settings a lot when you're using the iPod. The more you do, the more it has to access the hard drive and switch out the memory buffer (and light up the screen), and that will suck battery life.
* Once a month or so, let the iPod run until the battery is completely dead and it shuts itself off. Then plug it in to the computer and let it charge overnight. This will condition the battery and prevent any possible memory issues.

As for the service plan, if you buy from Apple directly (online or at the Apple Store) or CompUSA, you will get Apple's own AppleCare Protection Plan. It's $59 and gives you two years of unlimited phone support and coverage on the iPod from the date of purchase. You go directly through Apple if you ever have any issues. Other resellers sell their own service plans, but you'd need to check with them for terms.

At xmas,

I bought my DD age 12 an ipod (because everyone else had one) I wasn't going to spend over $100 so she got the shuffle.

Now I wanted an Mp# player for myself also. I bought the sandisk 1gb at CC for only $69.99 and I just love it. Much easier to download music to and it has an FM tuner in it. The features on it are very similar to an ipod (ability to pick individual artists/albums/etc....)so I consider it a great purchase.

BTW my DD has taken my san disk player on several occasions.....go figure...
