San Diego Suggestions Needed

We will be driving to San Diego from Las Vegas on a Friday (not till October - early planner) going to SW on that Saturday and then driving to Anaheim. We have never been to San Diego and have no idea where to stay, what to do, dining & entertainment options.

Our party will include myself, husband, DD 11 DD 7 (Her birthday trip) My sister, her husband, niece 9 and nephew 7

I thought something close to the water might be fun for the kids, but would love to find something to do the Friday we arrive. Help

San Diego is my favorite city!

Suggestions (and all are free or nearly free) would be Old Town, Cabrillo National Monument ($5 per car load), Seaport Village, Balboa Park.
