OK, I KNOW this is not a San Diego board, but we have some GREAT experts here.

We will spend three nights of our October Southern California stay in the San Diego area. While there, we wish to check out the seals at La Jolla, relax, and spend at least part of two days at Legoland with friends and at the San Diego Zoo. Trying to find a nice place to stay that won't break the bank! I qualify for a good rate at two Best Westerns: the Best Western Inn by the Sea in La Jolla and the Best Western Blue Sea Lodge in the Mission Beach area. The La Jolla location seems a bit more centrally located to the attractions we plan to see, plus they offer a free continental breakfast.

Do any of you San Diego folks (or former travelers!) have any information on either of these hotels? They are both rated three diamonds by AAA. I am a dedicated Marriott girl, but we won't be able to afford any of the nice Marriott locations in San Diego, boohoo!

Thanks for your help!

I got a great prepaid rate through Marriott at the San Diego Marriott Resort and Marina. I thought $109 per night was good so I grabbed it. We will spend three nights there. Our "splurge" of this vacation however is two nights at the Hotel Del Coronado. My son was intrigued with the legend of Kate Morgan so we booked a tower room in hopes of "running into her".

Do you mind my asking you got that rate? Was it something available directly from the hotel or through the web?

Thanks!

I found it on the Marriott web site but I booked it through reservations. I booked it over two months ago so maybe it disappeared by now.

I used to live in LA and do business in San Diego. I am not familiar with the interiors of the places you are talking about, but I will talk about the areas. La Jolla is more upscale than Mission Beach, but I think the beach might be better in Mission Beach and the motel you're talking about I think is directly on or within a block of the beach. Mission Beach tends to attract younger people - I think it is also a surfing beach. I am not sure if either of the motels you are talking about have pools.

San Diego is a beautiful place. There are a lot of lodging options in all different price ranges, and many of the areas are very nice - the inland as well as by the sea. I think you can even find good deals on resorts. Look around at hotels/resorts in the Mission Bay (as opposed to Mission Beach) and Shelter Island areas as well.

I think LegoLand is in Carlsbad. I've been to the San Diego Zoo several times. Carlsbad and the San Diego Zoo are some distance from each other so there will be some traveling to do.

Make sure you check out the gaslight district in Downtown San Diego for dinner. There used to be and I'm sure there still are many good restaurants there.

We stayed in the Hotel Circle area of San Diego last summer. It was nice and convenient to everything. There are upscale hotels as well as the more moderate to low end hotels but all fairly nice. It just depends on your pocketbook. We will be coming back this July and staying at Hotel Circle again. Check out the Handlery Hotel, Kings Hotel and of course the regular chain hotels.

What is the Hotel Circle? Is this a particular area of San Diego? We will be in San Diego at the beginning of August for 4-5 nights and are so unsure of where to stay.

It's an area in San Diego. It's very convenient to everything. I questioned before I went not knowing the neighborhoods and was told to check out this area. I was satisfied. Remember it's a nice room with a bed. Again there are Best Western's Quality Inns, Travelodges, Resorts etc in this area. Go out on the net and look up hotel circle San Diego for a list of hotels in that area.

We are also going to split our vacation between San Diego and Disneyland. We are thinking about staying at the Dana Inn and Marina in the Mission Bay area. I would welcome hearing about anyone's experience staying here or just opinions/comments in general about hotel and/or Mission Bay area.

Thanks!!

We just returned and our first two days were spent at the Hotel Del; a great experience, albeit a pricey one. We then moved off the "island" to the Marriott Resort and Marina. I got a great rate and I absolutely loved the location. Easy walking distance to the Gaslamp district, an easy drive to everywhere else. The hotel room was fine but the pool area was wonderful. Didn't see much of it during the day but we were night time hot tubbers. San diego is such a wonderful city, in the long run, I don't think it matters where you stay.

I'm glad to read because there's so many options, it seems overwhelming. I think that we will go for something near the gaslamp district. I wasn't sure if this was a good area to stay in or not but it sounds like it is.

The Coronado was high on my list but oh my, it is pricey! Maybe we'll just try to have dinner there and see who we can run into. ;)
