San Antonio experts

As mentioned I think river walk is a good idea. There are tons of places to eat, entertainment, neat stuff to sea. I visit often and my favorite place to eat is Casa Rio which is about a block away from River Center mall. The famous Alamo is also within walking distance. The only thing I would recommend is checking the calendar of events for the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center as it's right there and they have several conferences during the summer.

If you'd rather just go somewhere for a fancy dinner, champ gauche is on the north west side of town. It's just like Texas de Brazil or fogo de chao but the food is a million times better.

We had one day (off base) with our newly graduated Airman so we did Riverwalk. It was a lot of fun. Lot's to do and The Alamo isn't far from it. :)

I'd have dinner at Mi Tierra in Market Square and hang out at the Riverwalk afterward. I'd walk over to the Alamo and also maybe sign up for a ghost tour if I was interested in such things.

The Riverwalk & the Alamo are pretty much the go-to San Antonio stops. If you enjoy bock beers, have some Shiner too! :)

Dinner at Boudro's on the Riverwalk, then one of the tour boat trips.

assuming that this is the only night in SA, then, yes, the riverwalk is the thing to do. There are a lot of "chain" type places around the Mall, a lot of Landry's:eek: places. but there are more local and long standing places further down the river. try Dirty Nelly's. :drinking1

if, however, you have done the riverwalk already, you can always run out to Flores country store,

I second Casa Rio. Best chili and tamales on earth:thumbsup2

If first trip, and only one night, then yes Casa Rio is the traditional thing to do. Might not be the greatest TexMex in the City, but it is the traditional place to eat.

And of course the Alamo is a must, but also nearby is The Spanish Governors Mansion which is also great. And next door to the Alamo is the Menger Hotel...beautiful building, and where Theodore Roosevelt recruited a larger number of his famed "Rough Riders."

Best thing about downtown San Antonio is the amount of things to do all along the riverwalk area.

I agree with everyone else. 1 night in San Antonio with the assumption you haven't really been there before...Alamo, drinks at the Menger Hotel, dinner on the RiverWalk (& Casa Rio or Boudros would be my choices there) or at Mi Tierra.

I vote The Alamo, the Riverwalk & Boudros!

You can't tour the Alamo at night unless they've recently changed their hours but you can see the outside. Unless you're a true history buff that may be enough. Cads Rio on the Riverwalk is the granddaddy of all restaurants there. It's decent for standard tex-mex. Bourdon is more innovative. Can't go wrong either way. The Riverwalk has greatly expanded in recent years and there's some nice study along the museum reach.

The River Walk is always a fun place. If you go up to street level there are horse and buggy rides and usually the driver will give you a tour of landmarks in the area, which is pretty interesting! Menger Hotel is neat, it's right near the Alamo. I wouldn't waste my time with the mall, it isn't so great, there are some cute shops at street level, though. You can also take a river boat tour of the River Walk, or a dinner cruise, I have gone on the tour during Christmas time and it was gorgeous! They aren't on the River Walk, but my families favorite restaurants are Papasitos and Papadeaux, with google maps they are relatively easy to get to!

Thanks for all the replies. We've been to San Antonio often but were taking my visiting nieces and had one night before a flight home for one and a flight to Orlando for the other 4 of us. My Dd and one niece had Justin Timberlake tickets so I was looking for best suggestions for a fun night with my niece without a ticket.

We did lunch at Mi Tierra and Market Square in the afternoon and then as it turned out I was able to get two additional tickets to the concert on Stub Hub when prices plummeted at the last minute so instead of just dropping them off my niece and I went. I'm now a hero for pulling that off.

I love the boat excursion on the River Walk.

As far as eating everyone is always all about Mi Tierra.

EH. We ate there and it was crowded (walk up was an hour), noisy, the food was so-so, bland and honestly just un inspired. I've had better food here at home than there. They did have a huge bakery section but the line was also huge and while it did look unique I was so disappointed in the food I wasn't about to buy overpriced baked goods and worry that it would be only mediocre.

However Casa Rio was the place to eat. Next time I'm in San Antonio this will be my go to dinner. OMG best food, seating right on the riverwalk, it's on the corner of Commerce and the River.

Hotel worker told us about it and we later wished we had listened when he said to skip Mi Tierra.
