Samsung Galaxy Tablet or Nook HD+

I'm trying to make a decision between a Nook HD+ or Samsung Galaxy Tablet. My main thing I'm buying it for is to go on the internet but I also will use it for reading. I wish the Nook had a camera so I could do FaceTime, which is what makes me think I might want a Samsung Tablet. But I really want to be able to read a book on it also. I also like that I'll be able to watch movies on it. Can anyone help me compare the two??

No but here is my thinking on the whole thing. By the Samsung Tablet for all the other stuff and then buy a book to read.:lmao:

I guess I am leary with connecting your "book reader" to a "book chain".

Have you researched what sources you can use with the Samsung to upload books? Local library, Amazon, Google Play, etc...?

Why would you want a Nook when you can download books from several sources? I guess that would be my issue.

Good Luck!

I have a Samsung Galaxy. I have the nook, Google books and Kindle apps on it. I do my reading on the tablet and also use it for internet access.

Word is that nook is going to allow access to the Google Play Store so you'll be able to access more apps.

We have two Galaxy tabs and two Kindles. I originally bought the first Galaxy tab for my husband to use when he travels, to read and watch movies on. He really loves it, so much so that I bought the second one for myself.
We still have a lot to learn about them though, and don't quite know how to download movies onto it. We are both a bit tech challenged.

We do have Netflix on them though, so that is what he uses when he travels for movies. And all of our Kindle books are accessible as well.
I haven't used my Kindle since we bought these, and will be giving it to my brother and his wife.

There are a lot of apps available through Google Play, we have plenty of games to play and some nice office apps as well.
One thing I really liked was that the memory is expandable using a miniSD card.

The first one I bought through walmart.com, it is a refurbed 7 inch Tab2. I paid $150 for it and it has worked perfectly, not even a scratch on it.
The second one I got at Costco, they are currently on sale for $169.

I may be getting one for my DD as a birthday gift as well.

I would avoid the Nook for now. That arm of B&N was failing so badly that Microsoft just bought it. It is unclear at this time exactly what their plans might be, but it seems fairly certain that they will at least be shutting down the hardware division by 2014. I don't know what that would mean from the support side of things if you owned one.

And as far as how you'll get your books, that's not clear either. Here's an article from Forbes with more: http://www.forbes.com/sites/jeremygreenfield/2013/05/09/commentary-microsoft-to-buy-nook-what-it-could-mean/

Also, keep in mind that FaceTime is an Apple product, and is only available on Apple devices. I don't know if any of the other tablets offer a similar thing, but if the ability to video chat is important, be sure to check that out, and also which devices you can chat with. For instance, with FaceTime, you can only chat with someone using another Apple product.

:thumbsup2

I would go for The Galaxy Tablet.

We love our Galaxy tablet. I download books from our library for it. I have never had a Nook or Kindle, but the reviews made the Galaxy sound like it could do a lot more than those.

I'd go with the tablet as well, but I might stay away from the samsung galaxy tab. I have one and my son has one and while I like them just fine they are not going to be updated beyond Jelly Bean 4.2.2

So beyond September or so, you may be stuck with an outdated brick.

On the other hand, if that doesn't concern you, then it's a great tablet for the money. Very nice.

I bought my husband a Galaxy Tab for Christmas, and he loves it! He's used it for Skype, internet, watching Netflix, and reading (with the Kindle App)...all with no complaints. I have no experience with the Nook, but the Galaxy is an awesome buy, imo!

I love my Galaxy Tab 2. I bought it at Christmas and back then the tipping point for me was access to the Play store - I didn't like that the Nook was locked in to BN's app market. I have both the Nook and Kindle apps installed on my Galaxy, along with Kobo, which makes for a great selection of content at good prices.

Hardware wise, the two devices are on pretty even footing so I think it comes down to details and your personal use habits - the Galaxy has the camera but I never use it so that didn't factor in for me (and you can't FaceTime from any Android, but there are other video chat apps available), the expandable memory was essential and they both have it, and with the Nook getting access to the Play Store I think it is more or less a toss up between the two.

I'd be a bit wary of buying the Nook right now, though, with BN reportedly looking to sell that division and Microsoft looking like a possible buyer - if that sale goes through, I wouldn't expect much in the way of support for Android-based Nooks because MS would almost certainly want to use the acquisition to increase market share for Windows 8.
