We have both locally. I have Costco. Sister in Law has Sam's memberships.
Saves money? I admit, the quality of the meats we buy is pretty darn good. Cheaper and less expensive stuff is available at the market. KNOW the prices before you go in. Say Hamburger , sure it's a deal if you need 10 lbs and are willing to split it up and freeze. Ditto the chicken breasts.
I buy printer paper by the box. Cheaper, but I got to store 11 reams of paper I am not using.
Snacks and kid lunch stuff. Cheaper than the market at full price. But the market will have "lost leader" sales on things like Capri Suns about once a season. Again, know your prices. Bread is an OK price, I know I can do better at the "bag it yourself" grocery store.
Food. Frozen stuff I do ok on. Fresh, it's tough for a family of 4 to eat 10 lbs of grapes before some start going bad. Yogurt, lunch meat, milk, eggs and cheese are good buys. Just really know what your family eats, otherwise you are tossing it out in a week or two because it's bad.
AVOID the center of the store. Books are at a good price, but if you were not planning on buying the recent best seller, you just added to your bill. Ditto the DVD's and clothing.
Cost of membership vs. what you will save in a year. I never figure this, but I know that we don't spend enough to justify the membership cost. It's the quality of the meats that keep us coming back.
