I was just about to fill my Publix Pilgrim salt & pepper shakers and realized I don't know which is which. One has two holes and the other has three. Anyone?

I always put the salt in the 2 holed one. (I figure there won't be as much salt coming out of the 2 holed one compared to the 3 holed one) That's all I got.

salt - shaker with least number of holes
pepper - shaker with most number of holes

I love my Publix Pilgrim shakers. This is the last year of the Pilgrim items. I wonder if they are coming out with something new next year or is Publix done doing this kind of thing. :confused3

Sounds like you know what you're talking about. ;) Do you know why? I would have thought it was the other way around, but maybe that's just because I don't like pepper. :teeth:

I always thought it was the other way too, as you don't want too much pepper.

I like the commercials. I have the whole pilgrim family and Mr. & Mrs. Claus too. Maybe they'll have Mr. & Mrs. Turkey next year. :teeth:

The salt flows very freely, thus you use the shaker with fewer holes. Pepper is much harder to "shake" out.

This is the last year for the Mr. and Mrs. Claus, too. I wonder what will be next. I love the Mr. and Mrs. Turkey idea.

I think that because salt granules are more uniform in size and shape, they naturally flow out more quickly. Pepper needs more holes because the granules aren't as uniform, so they don't flow as smoothly and quickly.

Who knows...that's my guess... :lmao:

I thought it was the other way around too. :confused3 I don't really use either so its never been an issue.

They sound cute though. Enjoy!

My home ec teacher in Jr. High said that salt shakers always had more holes since people use more salt than pepper, as pepper is much stronger. So the three holed one is the salt shaker.

Well, I'd like to think I know what I'm talking about ;) but I'm just going by what my mom, grandma, etc. always did.

Salt comes out so much easier than pepper does too.

I googled it...what I read said the salt shaker has more holes.

I always thought the salt shakers had more holes. :confused3

Yes - that was my understanding too. I always put the pepper in the shaker with the fewest holes.

I paid attention at my sister's last night, since I had read this just before we went for Thanksgiving dinner. She has two rooster shaped shakers, one black and one white. The black one had 3 holes, the white one only two.

My boyfriend is a chef and is terribly useful for sorting out issues such as this. Salt shakers always have more holes than pepper shakers. It even says so under "salt shaker" on Wikipedia and the interwebs never lie. :) This goes back to a time when pepper was much more expensive than salt and therefore, one wanted to use it more sparingly.
