Right, it's been a couple of decades since I was in the US. I can't recall how they do the sales/gst tax in California. Is the price on the label the price with tax or is it applied at the till? And how much is tax anyways in California - is it a flat rate like NZ and Aussie or does it depend on the goods?

TIA

Pretty sure the tax is applied at the till, but I don't know how much it is.

Don't forget when shopping at Macy's to collect your international visitors pass (you'll need to take your passport there), it allows you to have 10% off which just about offsets the sales tax :thumbsup2

I think sales tax in anaheim is 7.75% based on my receipts from my purchases... its also applied at point of sale from what i can see.

Thank you ladies! Never could understand why sales tax couldn't be put on the sticker prices, I'll have to tell the kids Mummy has to add some extra money otherwise they'll be disapointed when they spend their pocket money and can't afford something at the till.

Good tip on Macys, thank you!

The hotels may add extra tourism tax too.

Macy's card is good but excludes cosmetics/ fragrances. Still good prices though.

The sales tax varies by county, which is stupid :rotfl: however if you just add 10% to the label you'll be fine. That way it's easy to quickly work out in your head, you don't have to scramble for extra money at the till, and you know you'll get change back. :thumbsup2

There isn't a national sales tax in the USA. Though the federal government does levy taxes on certain goods. For the country each state decides how sales tax are applied. It can vary from county to county and cities within the counties also.

Where I live in NC the state sales tax for most goods is 4.75% and due to county sales tax the total rate is 7.75%. Sales tax on food is much lower.

Ah you see the GST (Goods & Services Tax, or Grab, Steal and Take depending on how you view it) is already applied here in NZ and in Aussie to the price tag and you get the till reciept with how much was tax if you want to know. In NZ it's 13.5% on everything, it was 10% for about 15 years and then they moved it up. When I lived it Turkey it was similar to both the USA and NZ, the tax was already applied on the tag like NZ but like the USA it varied depending on the item - none on food, 200% on certain luxury foreign cars.

If I add the 10% to everything as Bec suggested I think I'm less likely to have a heart failure at the till.
