Here in the UK, we don't rely on the Coast Guard to "save lives at sea" - we have a volunteer crew equipped with some amazing kit (like multi-million pound lifeboats). I can't express enough the respect I have for the Lifeboatmen - when their pagers go off, they stop whatever they are doing and scramble to the station, in any weather.

I used to holiday in Salcombe, a beautiful little fishing village on the South coast of the UK. I was amazed to find a series about it following the lifeboat crew of 47-022 the year round on YouTube - just search for Salcombe Lifeboat. Incredible stuff.

In many areas of the US, such as the one I live in there are volunteer fireman who do much the same except they respond to fires, accidents (auto and other) and whatnot.

I don't think that many people know (we didn't) that many, if not all, of the rescue/recovery
divers around the USA are volunteers who pay for their own training & supplies,
including the special vehicles, gear, etc.
They do not get one cent from any community or govt. $$.
They must fund raise year round.
We were astonished to learn this when we talked to our local group at
a community education event.

We have a family member in the coast guard & pray for him often.
The men & women around the world who risk their lives daily are phenomenal.

I did not know this until we started watching Doc Martin last year. I really want to visit Port Issac
