Salary Workers

My hours are 9am - 5pm with an hour for lunch, so technically we work 35 hours per week. However most days I work through lunch to get a project done. On the flip side if I need to leave an hour early because DS has a Doctor's appointment it is not that big of a deal. My job is flexible enough too that if DS is sick I don't have to take a vacation or sick day, I can work from home. Thank goodness for computers:thumbsup2

My minimum is 40 but puh-lease. I work more than that and take calls on weekends.

When I do take a long lunch, I never even look back in shame.

My DH is a salaried employee but he was hired that way because of his education level and his expertise in his field. He is expected to "get the job done" not be there from 9-5 monday through friday. He often works way over 40 hours at work and more at home to make sure he gets what he needs done. He never takes sick days and rarely takes personal days or uses his whole 3 weeks of vacation.

I also know plenty of folks who are salaried and therefore ineligible for overtime, so they work some shorter weeks to balance out the longer one- everyone's got a different policy.

In theory that is how it is supposed to work at DHs job too. Theories are nice.....:rotfl:

Fortunately I'm self-employed, so I don't have to answer to anyone about my hours.

DH is in a technical position w/ a Fortune 500 company which operates worldwide. He is salaried & technically expected to work 40 hours a week, but the unwritten expectation for maintaining your position is generally 60. He's on-call 24/7 & must fully cover a pager rotation every five weeks, 24 hours a day. He's technically supposed to get comp time, but probably could kiss his job goodbye if he actually tried to use it, or even fully partake of his personal & vacation days -- which he's also technically on-call for anyway.

Right now we're just glad he's employed & just waiting for the economy to turn around so we can bite the hand that feeds us.

My son is salaried & works lots of overtime to get a project finished-then will get to take a "half day" off on Fridays occasionally.

MY DH makes a base salary-but his commission comes to twice his salary-he works from home and is "on the road" seeing customers daily- he works most nights & one day each
weekend doing paperwork.
