I am going to a friends today for a BBQ...my job is to bring the salad. When I asked was there a preference as to 'what kind'...I was told "Suprise Me"! Any suggestions?

Well if they are serving BBQ, potato salad would be a good choice. So would cole slaw.

If it's steaks, then a good tossed salad.

If it's chicken, I would make a pasta salad.

My sister-in-law makes a green salad, and she puts feta cheese, dried cranberries, and pine nuts in it. Then she dresses it with balsamic vinagrette. It sounds kind of gross, I know, but it's awesome tasting!

My mom use to make a mayo salad for our cookouts. Very simple salad to make. Make a standard tossed salad, squeeze the juice of either a half or whole lemon (depending on the size of salad) on the salad. Toss the salad to coat all pieces with the lemon juice, then add mayo to taste. This is one the favorite salads in our house.

you can do a mexican salad:

3 lbs. of lettuce
1 lbs. of hamb.
taco seasoning
1 can red beans
1 sm. bottle dorthy lynch dressing
3/4 bag of diritos

brown the hamb and put the taco seasoning in. Put it over top the lettuce and mix well. Next drain the red beans and mix. Then the following ingredients. Just make sure you mix it well.

I knew I could count on all of you for great tips!!! Thank you:D

I know I have been married for almost 29 years but........what is a Honeymoon salad? When I was first married I was very very green and had no idea how to make ANYTHING!! It wasn't until many years later I realized that my first few salads had been made with a Cabbage which all along I had mistaken for an Iceberg lettuce:rolleyes: No wonder I had a lot of odd looks and it always seemed a bit tough!

Thanks again...

I just made a fantastic salad last week for the first time. It's a tortollini broccoli salad with sunflower seeds and raisins. Let me know if you want the recipe--it was a huge hit among everyone.

I always make a 7 layer salad.
1# Lettuce
2# celery
3# peas
4# sugar ( just sprinkled over peas)
5#mayo
6# cheddar cheese
7# Bacon bits
Chill and serve.
My kids don't like peas and love this salad.

Thanks minnie56,

you are a great second banana.

Do you know when tomatoes blush ?

This is my favorite salad--my dad taght it to me:

Add the following to large bowl:
-Cube 2 ripe avacadoes*
-slice two med. tomatoes in wedges*
-Slice 6-8 mushrooms (or as many as you want)*
-slice about a half a red onion*
-slice a whole cucumber* (hint: peel it so that it looks "striped"---looks very pretty)

*you may need more for larger group

Dressing:
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
3/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
1-2 cloves of garlic, crushed or chopped finely
2 1/2 tbsp Salad Supreme (by McCormack)
1/4 teaspon of freshly ground pepper (or about 3-4 twists)
1/2-1 teaspoon anchovie paste (optional---but it really adds wonderful flavor--everyone I've served this salad to LOVES it!)

Add all the dressing ingredients except olive oil to a bowl. Mix with a fork until combined. Slowly add the olive oil while vigorously mixing the dressing. Taste and adjust seasonings. Add dressing to the veggies and coat them all. Refrigerate until you need it (I like to let it "marinate" for at least 20 minutes before serving).

I love it like this or served on a bed of fresh baby spinach or baby greens! This salad serves about 4-6 people with healthy portions; if you double it, you should be fine ;).

Hope this helps!

LOL!!! This was too funny! It sounds like something I would have done. :D

minnie56, here's the recipe:

Broccoli and Tortellini Salad

6 slices bacon, cooked crisp & crumbled (I used more)
20 oz. Cheese filled tortellini
2 lg. heads fresh broccoli, cut into small florets (don't use stems)
1 cup (or less) raisins
1 cup (or less) sunflower seed kernels
1 small red onion, finely chopped

Dressing:

1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup sugar (I used a little less)
2 Tbsp. cider vinegar

Directions:

Cook tortellini in boiling salted water for 8-10 minutes until al dente. Drain, rinse under cold water.

In a small bowl mix together mayo, sugar & vinegar to make dressing. Set aside.

In a large bowl, combine broccoli, tortellini, bacon, raisins, sunflower seeds and red onion. Pour dressing over salad and toss GENTLY (or else tortellini will break!) Chill at least 1 hour.

This recipe serves 12.
