Saga Cruise Line Requests Covid Vaccine

This and short answer to not derail the thread is the cdc ignored other forms of transportation and targeted cruise lines in 2020. We will see how 2021 goes.

So I don’t know if and when a restart happens what powers the cdc still has. Vaccine could be part of rules for cruise ships to sail out of US ports.

Not to get too far off topic here, but cruising isn't a form of "transportation" and therein lies the issue. It's comparing apples to oranges. When you're on an airline flight, you aren't with those people day in and day out. Yes, you're in a confined space but only for a matter of hours (yes, some flights are longer than others, but NONE of them are the length of a cruise) and in an airplane, you have an exchange of cabin air through HEPA filters. Why should the CDC treat cruises like anything else? They are in a class all by themselves and have always been centers of outbreaks for infectious agents simply due to the fact that many many people are all crammed in together for days on end. It's the same reason we see the virus spread so rapidly in prisons and nursing homes. The same people in close quarters together all the time. More exposure = more transmission.

Last I will comment on this so it doesn't get locked. A cruise ship would be very easy to socially distance on compared to say an airplane etc. It would be similar to when I am in a store, I choose a way around people to keep my distance. Yes they could change the filtration systems too. I will say my workplace hasn't changed filtration systems either. You can have your opinion and I can have mine. On an airplane I can't socially distance from the person next to me that we are shoulder to shoulder with. Hopefully they also keep there head pointed straight ahead too. My thoughts are if we cruise later this year is to drive to the port instead of flying:)

Its been posted in so many words for mo ths. They refused to talk with cruiselines all Summer. When Trump said the CDC could not prohibit cruiselines they shut the ports and said 60days before a ship wants to sail in or out of US with passengers they had to pass a certification. They won't tell the cruiselines what they have to do to pass. This means Summer cruises are for sure gone. Industries are predicting 2022 at the earliest.

I work for another federal agency. I would say that this doesn't mean that summer cruises are for sure gone. Agency priorities change as time goes on (and different administrations) based on a variety of complex reasons. So my opinion is that we can't predict what CDC is going to do.

As others have said lets please try to keep the thread on topic - we have a catch all vaccine thread as well, or if you'd like to talk about what the CDC may do, please visit the community forum.
