Safe/Fun areas to stay over near I-95 in SC or NC

Looking for a place to stay over a night during a drive to Florida. Looking to stay over in SC or NC but having trouble looking at a safe/fun area :/

We usually stay at the Holiday Inn in Fayetteville NC, there's nothing fun there, but it's safe. We just check in, get dinner, go to bed and get up early the next day to head out.

How about driving further south and stay just outside savannah, ga. You can tour the city if you arrive early or do it the following day. Also, you can also stop by st. Augustine on your way to wdw if time permits
