Sad situation... Need help?

a few years back my DH's dear Grampa passed at 2 a.m. (our flight left at 5 a.m.) we got NO sleep that night, took off as planned (too late to change it) and DH flew back by himself for the funeral 3 days later, then flew back to WDW to join us again a day later- we would all have gone, but we couldn't afford all the ticket changes, or the cost of 4 tix back and then back to FL..... he isn't sorry he went back....sometimes you can't plan these things, you just do what you have to do when it occurs.....so sorry about your situation....you aren't evil for continuing to live your lives......:sad1:

First, I'm so sorry about your situation... You are not terrible for not living your own life, you have to do that as you never know what will happen. Disney is one of the most accomodating organizations I've ever dealt with so I'm sure they will help you with whatever you need. As others have said I don't think travel insurance will help you.

I will keep you and your family in my prayers.

Thank you all for the great advice - part of the reason I feel so guilty is because this past fall, we had JUST booked our flight to Chicago to go to a Notre Dame game after snagging tickets to my hubby's favorite matchup, then we found out that they were having a race to help support the daughter. We didn't go, but the rest of my family did - and I still feel guilty about that, because it was close to the last time that she was feeling well.

The whole situation is very sad - the cancer was discovered only last July, and they've been fighting it aggressively, but as the main cancer has shrunk somewhat, other cancer growths were discovered throughout her body. My cousin is divorced from the girl's mom, and they don't get along. Since she lives where he grew up, the town has rallied around her, but since my cousin is an only child of a divorced mom, he doesn't have any support when he goes to visit his daughter.

We plan on trying to get together with him more often - in fact, I had posted about looking for some good "ramily reunion" places to go relatively recently. His new wife and he had a son just before the cancer was discovered, and I'd like to meet him!

Anyway, thank you for the advice.

Yes, ME will take you back to the airport, just need one day's notice to get you on the schedule. Each person is entitled to one roundtrip within their trip dates.

I don't think that is the case at all. I have gotten ME with an hours notice. Also, I have used ME for more then one RT per stay before as well, unless something has changed.

So sorry to hear of this. Remember death does not take a holiday, death does not keep business hours so you should not feel bad about continuing with your plans. Take your vacation and if something happens at least you will be prepared.
HUGS to you.

OP Sorry to hear about your family.. It's very hard to decide what to do. I don't have an answer for that..

I do have experience with not taking the 1st part of a round trip flight. We decided to leave a few days earlier, so instead of cancelling and rebooking, which would have cost more. I just booked us less expensive oneway tickets on SWA thinking that I would (could) use the return portion of my original ticket. When we showed up at the airport, with our luggage and were ready to check in, we were given the 3rd degree about why we did not fly on the first part. I told them our plans changed and we were unable to. The ticketing agent told me that there is something in the flight contract that said if we did not show up for the 1st part, the airline could re sell our seats for the 2nd -return part, because we were officially "no shows". We did get seats, but only because the plane was not sold out.

I am not sure of the rules now, this was about 5 years ago.. but I'd be wary about skipping the 1st part and expecting to use the return part without asking.

My sympathy to you and your family, I hope you are able to enjoy your vacation.:hippie:

Just walk up to the ME desk and tell them your last name. They'll check the reservation system and send you on your way. You'll just have to collect your own bags.
