I was speaking with my mom today (we live hours away from all our family) and she was telling me that my cousin and her husband just came back from WDW with their two children - ages 15 and 9. Hold on - you won't believe this... the kids hated it.... couldn't wait to come home..... just wanted to lay around by the pool all day. My cousin and her husband loved WDW - WHAT is wrong with these kids (lol) - it must be that I don't visit home enough and spead any magic their way I am sorry I let them down.... my mother says they are just nasty children anyway and I shouldn't feel bad (lol) but I can't imagine a child not liking WDW.....

We are Disney Fanatics. When my sister was going thru a nasty divorce, we took her kids to WDW and stayed at Port Orleans. The boys were 9, 11 and 15 at the time. They were not interested in the parks. The 9 yo didn't want to go on all the rides we wanted to, I told him that he didn't have to, but he had a fit. The 11 yo just wanted to swim, and the 15 yo just wanted to comb his hair and look in the mirrow. They are much older now, and they appreciate my enthusium for WDW, but I never took them back again. My entire family thinks we are nuts for going so many times. We have no kids.
Last year we went to DLP, DL and WDW....It makes me happy.

Hate to admit it, but my first time going was when I was 12. I liked it but I was disappointed because of the rides. I wanted more roller coasters. I guess I just expected something different. I am a disney fanatic now and we go at least twice a year and my kids all love it. We will see what happens as they grow up..

I think its probably the age of the kids. If this was their first time going to a Disney theme park they were probably wondering where all the thrill rides were! I anticipate my kids will still love Disney parks at that age but then they have been going since they were 6 and 8 so will have a lot of memories tied into their experience. Sad to say, WDW isn't for everybody. Chances are when these kids grow up a little they will appreciate all that Disney has to offer, hopefully!

You have to start your kids on their Disney addiction at a very young age! Thats the way to make it work. Shove anything and everything Disney related down their throats in order to make them just like you! It works

Wow how sad. There is just so much to do now a days at Disney, how can they not like it. DS and DD always loved going. Now that DS is in college he wishes he could still go with us. And DD gets just as excited as we do. Maybe they just aren't Disney addicts like some of us. Things could change.

That is sad. My oldest dd is almost 22 now and still loves Disney. She was 10 the first time she went – then again at 12, 13, 15, 17(2x) and 19. My little ones are 4.5 and 2 and are just now starting to learn what it’s all about. My 4.5 y/o ds has been 2x (6 mos. and 3.5) and my 2 y/o dd celebrated her first birthday at Disney. We will be going back in December of this year and my 22 y/o is just as excited as I am. It’s my dh that we have to convince to love WDW – he never went as a child and just doesn’t seem to get the magic.

We take our grandchildren with us when we go and my adult children when they can (my 23 year old LOVES disney and we recently took her and her husband who had never been and he LOVED it) - my 14 year old DGD is bugging me now to plan another trip! and the 8 year old is egging her on! Even the 2 year old talks about Disney World!

I went to Hawaii in October with a group of 15 people and all everyone wanted to do was lay around on the beach. I was completely bored by the second day. I would take WDW/DL (even DLP which I wasn't crazy about) over Hawaii any time!!!!

Kids today want the high tech thrill rides. They probably would have loved Universal Studios. I agree with the OP, you have to start them out young, once a child reaches preteen, Disney becomes too cutesy for them. If they start out loving these characters and WDW young, it becomes a magical place they will always remember. I know I had magical memories as a kid, but upon my first trip as an adult I was kinda disappointed. Tin foil in Peter Pan's Flight? That was so cheap looking. Wood cutouts with painted pictures in Snow White, and dressed up dolls. But then my inner child kicked in
My DD9 LOVES WDW. However I am considering mixing our next family trip with Universal Studios, she's never been and she is getting addicted to thrill rides. I think it would make a special trip for her.

Well we took my then 15 year old stepson to DL a few years back and he didn't like it at all. He wanted to stay in the room and order room service and watch tv. He even had a friend with him and we allowed them to choose whatever they wanted to do and meet up with us a few hours later. They called us after about an hour and said they had see all of DL as well as CA and were back in the room and needed money for a movie. I was in shock. At 15 and with a friend I would have been all over DL and never even got to CA until another day.
But, at 6 years old we took my stepson to the beach and all he wanted to do was stay in the room and watch tv. We should have learned our lesson then and just stayed home and watched tv instead of spending $4500 + to go to California.
Yea for my dd! She loves to go to WDW and can't wait to return. ( BTW my stepson went 2 times to WDW w/ his mom and didn't like it either.)

I'll admit that when my parents planned a 16th birthday trip to Disney I was a pill to say the least. I think it was the age - I was too cool to be hanging out with just my parents and certainly too cool for Disney. I've only just realized what a waste that was! I've since apologized to my parents because secretly I was having a good time.

we went with family this year - 17 yr old, 58 yr old and 59 yr old and they moaned and moaned , heat , walking , tired bla bla bla so................ gather they didn't like it much either and they wouldn't go back

so we are going ourselves this year with my Mum and Dad who are 74 and 75 yrs of age and they love it

I agree, you have to start them early. My DS is 2 1/2 & loves all disney. He loves to watch any disney dvd. We have to hit the disney store everytime we go to the mall. He tells my DH he needs to go back to see the characters. Any change he finds money he says it needs to go into his "vacation money" bank. Yes, he puts the found money in his vacation bank. He knows that when it is time for vacation, he gets to trade the bank money in for disney money. Anytime he sees anything to do with WDW he tells anyone that will listen that he loves cinderella. My DH says I passed my "Mickey" gene onto my DS.

Well I do believe that I am related to those children - although I must say growing up my cousin wasn't the nicest person in the world - oops did I say that - my kids are ages 16 and almost 13 - and they can't wait to go - some of their friends make comments "why are you going there again?" - and my DD (16) nicely tells them Disney is more than just rides - it's a magical world where you can be silly - have fun - learn - explore - and spend mom and dad's money -lol - Last summer DD and I went to Paris for a week - just the two of us for some bonding time - and on the flight back she thanks me for the wonderful trip and says that it was great but there is no place like Disney - that's my girl - I do believe the brainwashing has worked well on that one - the DS is not far behind her - now to work on the DH - he is the last one in the family who doesn't have all the Disney magic needed - I see I have a large task in front of me- wish me luck

Truly hard to believe. So glad it isn't the case in my family. Even almost 18 year old DS loves the place, although his first trip was at age 3. Many of his friends don't understand our obsession, and I must say that during our trip in Dec he needed a bit more downtime that I did (had to fit in some of those NBA games you know) he is a great sport and never refuses to do any ride I ask him to go on (Except the ToT and he might say no to Dumbo, but I don't ask about that one). Sorry to hear they were unhappy. Guess you won't be calling them to ask about their trip anytime soon.

Prior to moving to FL at age 14, I had never been to WDW. I had loved the local 6 Flags (it was Marriots Great America back then). Disney was ok to me back then but I wasn't wowed. I think my fondest memories in my younger years at WDW was Grad Nite with my buddies. Years would go by without trips to WDW. My DW never liked Orlando as she remembered rude treatment to her family. Our first trip to O-Town together was to Sea World and Universal. After that, I got her to agree that O-Town was a nice place. We were given $500 Disney dollars and two park hoppers from one of her clients and did a four day stay at GF. We found that staying on site was wonderful. Two years later we took our DS who was a little older than 1 and found that we were living our childhood thru our DS. Today we are HUGE fans of Disney. I would have to say that it is DS favorite place to be. It would break my heart to find one day that he would rather go to Universal or IOA over WDW, but I'm sure in the cycle of life, he would find himself a Disney lover with his family in the future.
