sad occurrance--another death of disney guest

Well from the article it doesn't sound like a drowning at all. Seems the girl was responsive. From the article description I think I know where she was sitting and during regular operation she wouldn't have been hit with real big waves from the wave pool.

I feel terrible for her parents as the girl was on vacation with her aunt and cousins so they weren't even there with her.

I'm suprised that it looks like we have another case of unknown pre-existing condition or heat stroke/dehdration.

On another note -- Does anyone know how the ToT girl is doing?

I agree, it doesn't sound like she drowned. I'm scared its the heat, if its anything like the heat we are having its hard to breathe just walking out the door.

I am so sad and annoyed. I keep my eyes closely on DDs 7 and 9 even though they can both swim. Kids get tired easily in the pool and can collapse. I would not let my girls in the wave pool at Tyl. without being within a metre reach of them. Those waves knock the stuffing out of me and I am a stong swimmer, never mind kids.

So sad. I can't even imagine sending my DD to Disney, and her never coming back.

I have just started taking my kids to the pool regularly, and they are taking swimming lessons this summer. But I ALWAYS have my eyes on both of them. I put them in the same colored suits so I can recognize them easily. I can't fathom some of your stories of rescuing children who are not being attended to. Last night at swimming lessons, I stopped a little boy, probably about 2 years old from going up the stairs to the slide. It was quite some time (probably two minutes) before I noticed a mother looking franitcly around, so I knew he belonged to her. Just think of what could have happened in those 2 minutes?

I jumped in at the Poly pool several years ago when a young child went down the slide before his dad did, and panicked when he hit all that water and splash at the end. The lifeguard didn't see him, but saw me, and got there right after. The child's mom ran over and made some comment like "what was she (pointing to me) doing". I just took it that she was stressed--but the lifeguard thanked me.

How said for this family.

I heard about this story this morning on my drive in to work. How very sad. :grouphug:

How sad. I've pulled several little ones out of that wave pool, as well as a couple half drowned adults. Not once did a Disney lifeguard assist. :sad2:

I have experienced just the opposite with the lifeguards. I have seen lifeguards jump in Disney pools numerous times. Twice in one day at the TL wave pool in fact.

As soon as they saw someone struggling they were in the water immediately.

Now, as with with anything else in life - I'm sure there are good lifeguards & not so good lifeguards. I guess they ones I saw were pretty good & attentive to the situations going on.

There are few places that would be harder to guard then a wave pool... Think about it... people are always falling and trashing... if you got in everytime you would be too exhausted to deal with the REAL emergency.

Disney has a great program for thier lifeguards. I met the head guy a few years ago and he told me about thier training. I wish I had had their resouces when I was a waterfront director, just really great stuff! And they have drills throughout the summer. I actually met this man early one morning at the Beach Club where he was doing an "oversight" of a drill at the crack of dawn!

However, I would urge you that if you do not have training do not jump in immediately. You would be amazed at how many folks drown trying to rescue someone. It's actually fairly common. Get the guards attention if at all possible.

Boy, did that hit home. My 14 y.o. DD is in Florida now with relatives.

What a terrible, terrible tragedy. I just can't imagine how horrific this all is for the family.

So sad. Blessings for the girls family. It was on the news here in NY early this morning. I am so glad that my ds is a lifeguard now and at the water parks I make him stay with his other 2 bros. I wish this family peace and comfort during this most difficult time.

I agree about the wave pool. It's a very wide space with tons of people in it getting pummeled by the waves, it's truly a nightmare from a safety standpoint. I also saw the lifeguards early in the morning at SAB hours before it opened. It's not a job I could do, just too stressful. They were constantly looking around and at the bottom of the pool and the lifeguards were the same way at TL.

This is so sad. I wonder if she was sick and dehydrated.

I was a lifeguard in h.s. and I love the water. I can't tell you how over the years how many people I have pulled out of the water. It was rest period when every one needs to be out of the water for 15 minutes. A couple that are friends of mine had their backs turned talking to another couple. The 18th month old girl, was filling water up in a bucket and pouring it into the sand. The little girl walked out to far and fell face first in the water. I saw that the parents did not see her fall in and I immediately jumped in and picked her up. She was choking pretty good.

The parents turned around when they heard their dd crying. They couldn't believe she wandered back into the pool. They thanked me for keeping an eye on her. They couldn't believe she walked back into the pool and couldn't get her feet under her.

Also, when I trained to be a lifeguard-one assignment was to bring in articles in any newspapers where you found that someone drowned. Sad to say, it happens way to much.

How very sad. Bless this girl and prayers for her family :(
