Our beloved cat "Longstreet", our cat referred to in our handle, fell deathly ill early last week. After a week of trying to diagnose what was wrong it became apparent that no matter what our vet tried Longstreet was not going to respond. His bloodwork showed that his immune system had stopped working. his body was slowly shutting down and it would only be a matter of time before the inevitable occurred. The vet allowed us to bring him home for the weekend to say our good-byes and we are grateful for that.

We spent the weekend comforting him and letting him cuddle with his favorite plush animal, a miniature Eeyore. He slept in our bed and seemed quite content to be home.

We are having to put him to sleep today. He is 9 years old and we were sure we had a lot more time with him and it has been quite a sad shock. He leaves behind me,his adopted father; his adopted mother and my wife Mary; our one year old daughter Katy who went crazy whenever she saw him; his best friend "Itty" our other cat; and Oliver our beloved dog. He will be forever missed.

Buit he will also be forever immortalized in our handle.

So sorry to hear about your cat. I know how close we can become to our pets (members of the family) and when we lose one we just have to be sad until we can start to remember all the wonderful memories and funny things they did. I too had a sick kitty last month and after a 4 day hospitalization she pulled through. She is 10 years old and I love her so I know how you feel. Take care, Lori

I'm sorry to hear that.

We lost two cats last year within a month of each other. The first died of kidney failure (she was born with only one), and the second one grieved so much his body just shut down the immune system. :(

It's hard to lose a loved one.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's so hard to lose a furry family member. :( We had to put my beloved Isabelle down a little over a month ago and it was so hard ... she was 17 and had been my best friend since I was 16 years old. My thoughts are with you ...

Sorry for your loss. I've been through it myself twice. My first cat was the "cat of my childhood" and will always hold a special place in my heart. My favorite picture of him is of me holding him in my wedding gown----he truly did grow up with me......he died when my second DS was weeks old.
I currently have 3 cats who are all 7 years old and have been the cats of my kid's childhoods. I dread when one of them goes bc. they are such a close-knit "family", the 3 of them, I know the other 2 will be lost, not to mention my kids.
At least your DD is too young to fully grasp what has happened and grieve deeply. It's a blessing that she is spared that....easier on you too.
9 yo is young for a cat and I can understand your shock. My second cat died suddenly at 10. Hopefully "Itty" will live a good long while (my first cat was 17 and I've heard of cats living even longer).
Allow yourself to greive. Pets are a big part of our lives and are loved. It's not an easy thing to lose them.:(
BTW there are websites for greiving pet owners. Some have comforting poems, ideas for memorializing your pet and advice on the greiving process.

I'm so sorry. I know how badly this can hurt.

Be sure to give Itty and Oliver an extra hug or two. I discovered that other pets worry and even grieve themselves.

Oh I am so deeply sorry.

I know what it is like losing a beloved pet. We had to put my dog down of 13 years. It was the hardest decision I ever had to make. We also spent the last few days with him, cuddling him & showering him with love & Thanking us for being in our life.
We never had a cat while I was growing up. When I moved out I got a cat (couldn't have dogs in an apt) & now I have 2 cats. One is 11 yrs old (got him when he was 6 years old at a shelter) & the other is going to be 5 yrs old.
It is going to pain me when their time comes.
But having them in my life brings so much joy.

Remember to allow yourself to grieve. Don't feel foolish crying either. It is a totally NORMAL reaction when losing someone you love.

Take care
Again I am so sorry for your loss

I am soooooooo sorry....... There really is nothing anyone can say to make you feel better so I am not even going to try...... The only thing that can really comfort you is all the great memories you have with him:)
People who don't love animals will NEVER understand..... My dogs are like 2 additional children to me......When I lost my cat years ago I was devistated.......
Hang in there.

:( I'm so sorry!!

Been there... it is so hard. Best wishes to Longstreet, you and your family.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I know how painful it is to lose a beloved pet :(

So sorry to hear the news. It's nice that you were able to have the weekend with him.

I'm so sorry to hear about your cat. It's really something how animals become part of the family.

I've had the same cat for 18 years and I know it's going to be hard saying goodbye to her one day.:(

So sorry for your loss. Poor Longstreet. I had two cats when I was growing up, one we got when I was 4, one we got when I was 7. They both died when I was in my 20's, within 7 months of each other. They were 19 & 20. I was absolutely devestated. I know how much it hurts. There is truly nothing like a furry face to brighten up your day.

Now I have a 11 yo and my "twins" (litter mates) who are 5. I cannot even imagine the pain of losing them one day. They are truly my children, and even have people names. When my 11 yo was 15 mos. she got hit by a car and I almost lost her then. I had the option of putting her down or putting out $1500 for her to have surgery (she had a hernia and had a cast on her leg for two months.) Of course I chose the latter. There are those of us who are truly pet people, and you are definately one of us.

You'll be in my thoughts. Take care of yourself.

I'm so sorry for your loss, I know how much it hurts. :(

I am so very very sorry to hear about your furbaby :(

My deepest sympathies on the loss of your sweetie.

May I recommend www.petloss.com ? It has some good articles that helped me a lot when our Golden Retriever died.
